Now that the music video for Addict is out I figured I'd give you guys a behind-the-scenes look into how I animated Angel Dust and other Hazbin Hotel characters. It was truly exciting getting to work with VivziePop and her team and bring this beast to life, and I feel like my knowledge of animation has paid off and I've learned plenty more from being with the SpindleHorse crew as you'll see in this video. Enjoy! :)

What makes me appreciate this show more than what I normally would is the fact it's mainly hand drawn. Hand drawn animations are way more distinguishable, and end up looking a lot more natural at the end. It just sucks that it's not seen much anymore in the media, which is understandable considering it is a lot more difficult (and expensive) to make animations this way. Whether you like Hazbin Hotel or not, you still got to appreciate the amount of effort and time that goes into it

Oh, definitely. I swear, when I watched hazbin hotel for the third time, it finally really clicked in my mind just how fluid and 3-dimensional the animation is, despite still being 2-D. Watching the way that Alastor moves, specifically, just blew me away with how polished and natural it felt.

I'm so happy you're part of the team!! When I saw your fan animation I knew they would pick you up!! If you dont mind, do you have any advice for aspiring animators about getting into projects? What was your experience getting into productions, specifically spindlehorse? Do you think art college is worth it/ helped you more? also i just want to emphasize i adore your work and you are incredibly inspirational! I specifically love your use of arcs and bouncy two's, stay safe! : )
@AustinKalista
@AustinKalista 4 жыл бұрын
My advice for aspiring animators getting into projects: Keep a positive attitude, don’t set your expectations up very high (example: don’t think of yourself as the number one artist in the world or even up there with some of the greats because you may set yourself up for disappointment in the end), when making original material take reference and study from other projects and sources for inspiration while also keeping your project your own thing, and treat your fellow employees and workmates as fairly as possible. Before getting into SpindleHorse I just made fanart and fan animations of Hazbin while also trying to find good paying positions; once in a while I’d get decent pay from commissions or freelance work, but for the most part my job searching has been unsuccessful. Then one day in November of last year, I saw VivziePop made a tweet saying she’s looking for new animators, no testing needed. I of course was quick on my toes and sent my demo reel to Viv via email. She then responded very quickly and happily saying she loved seeing my fan content for Hazbin and that I’d be a perfect fit for her next project, which was Holidaze, a short that would be released right on Christmas Day. Even though it wasn’t Hazbin/Helluva related it was still a VivziePop project, so I gladly took the opportunity. We were on a real time crunch when working on that short, so I had to shut myself away from everything else until work was done, but it was still a ton of fun working with Viv’s characters at the same time. After that she and her team considered keeping me for other projects because they loved my animation work so much, so I happily agreed to it. She does pay her crew very well as a result of the massive support her content receives, and the majority of the team members are very enjoyable people and easy to talk to. Their friendship, teamwork and understanding is very apparent. Art college has definitely helped me develop my animation skills and improve on them as well as motivated me more to have high standards in art. It also helped that some of my professors were former Disney Renaissance animators, and they really knew their stuff. Classes may be expensive as heck, but it is worth it if you learn new things and apply some of that knowledge to your projects. I’m so happy to know my work inspires you! Hope you stay safe too and have a nice day! :)

Austin Kalista thank you so much for responding!! This is amazing advice and it means a lot. If you don’t mind, which art college did you go to? Do you think also studying from professionals works and books is also a good idea? sorry don’t mean to take up too much of your time ^^ “

I went to SCAD for five years. Sure, it’s always good to study from professionals, Richard Williams’ book “Animator’s Survival Kit” is a great learning tool too. It’s ok, you didn’t waste my time. :)

Austin Kalista that’s the exact book I had my eye on! Thank you so much for the advice :) I’ve been thinking about art school but I know that it can be pretty expensive, and I’m not entirely sure if it would be worth it. I’ve heard it’s what you make of it, and that it gives you materials and focus, so I’m still deciding if it’d be right for me.

There was a noticeable and massive improvement between this and Hazbin Hotel's shots. Not that Hazbin Hotel is bad, but it had a lot of flaws in multiple areas, to be expected as a first pilot from what is essentially a brand new homegrown animation studio. The rapid imrpovement from that pilot in Helluva Boss and Addict shows the intense effort and self improvement behind this work. Can't wait to see what comes next from you guys. In that regard, I'm glad ya'll are taking time to make these other smaller projects like Addict instead of just jump right into Hazbin episode 2. It's a good opprotunity to hone skills. I'm glad they picked you up, they're lucky to enlist the help of such a talented animator.

The humor is dark for sure, but the premise of the show is redemption. Sinners can be redeemed, which is the message Jesus brought to humanity. Helluva Boss is definitely not a redemption story, but Hazbin Hotel will be. The fact that they're taking the time to humanize the characters in Hazbin Hotel is what makes it a meaningful story. But of course, as I said, the dark humor probably rubs the wrong way for some folks. I was once told by a pastor, if the church isn't meant for sinners, who is it meant for then?

I have theories on Molly's character, for her eventual introduction to the series, though I think they might be more dark than anyone intended.

@t e a Making a comic + comic dub on it, but I'll give you 3 hints. 1. Only girl in the family business we know of. 2. 1940s treatment of women. 3. Molly (the drug) had been scientifically tested on PTSD sufferers in 2015 and has the conclusion of being able to help.

Honestly you animators are straight up paragons. I’d be thankful if I can draw half as good as you guys. Animation takes so much effort, time, and hard work, which is just so admirable and should be extra appreciated. ❤️

woooooh, thank u so much for showing the behind the scenes. the methods used for the dynamic camera move shots were very fascinating to see! i would have thought to animate the full body of angel then just smack the camera work on later in post but this way is a lot better. thank you!
