Im a recovering addict. It's not harsh to point out that most of us willfully made the decisions that led us there. Some of us just don't have the tools/skills to handle shit the right way, whether its inexperience or mental illness... or both. I had to go through it to understand that and take responsibility. It's the first step in getting past it.

In my early 20’s I did pills for 7 years until I had to go to a detox center to get clean. My parents always acted like it was the drug dealers fault that I did drugs… I had to tell them no one put a gun to my head and sold me drugs, I gladly did them.

My parents never understood that either. My friend and I did drugs, we still do recreationally. Never got addicted, but my parents acted like my friend forced me to, when in reality I willingly did everything I did.

I've lost my sister, grandpa, mother, grandma, and now my brother most recently. Just one after another from 2017, and the last few were rather close together. Even still, I have never drank alcohol, nor done drugs, never even smoked a cigarette, and I'll refuse to do any of it. I might be in pain, but I won't turn to an addiction. Life is too beautiful for me to want to ruin it with things like that. I feel bad for addicts when they're gripped by their addiction, but it really is their choice in the end in most situations. They put themselves there, and they need to wanna get themselves out, and there's no real excuse for it.

I'm glad to see you are still here and making good choices. I know where you're coming from better than just about anyone (I had a really bad 2016 as I will go into below if you are interested) and can say from experience, life will get better. There is an endless amount of beauty to experience and not allowing yourself to fall into despair is the only way you will get to experience it. Now for my little story. On January 1st, I found out my girlfriend of 2 1/2 years was cheating on me. I had a group of friends that were trying to help me feel better and on January 6th, I called one of them to see if we could hang out to distract myself from my terrible mood. She was killed in a car crash by a drunk driver on the way. The next day, January 7th, another friend from that group, who had been fighting depression and suicidal thoughts, took his own life. A third person in the friend group, she was the best friend of the first girl and girlfriend of the first guy, turned to drug and alcohol abuse. She overdosed on January 25th. The last was the friend from that group I would have considered myself closest to. February 14th, we were on Skype together when he took his own life. To top all of this off, at my graduation party that summer, I invited seven people, none of them showed up and none of them gave any explanation. I still haven't heard a word from any of them all these years later. I am currently 24 and have never had alcohol, smoked, or done drugs. I'm just finishing up my second year of college and my life is far brighter than it ever has been before. I found my purpose and strive to fulfill it every day. There are still days where I feel down about everything that happened, but now I realize, all I can do is keep pushing forward.

I'm pretty far left leaning on the political spectrum--at least for American politics & especially for sociopolitical stuff? But yeah you're absolutely right about some groups' inabilities to leave things they don't like alone is frustrating to just about every sane person that witnesses it. I swear they do more to make things worse than they do to help their cause, especially nowadays.

With all the bills in red states like: the nicknamed don’t say gay bill (and it’s imitators), the rather authoritarian book banning bills, and the equally authoritarian education bills making it harder for teaching stuff like the actual history of extreme racism in our country’s history among other things that don’t reflect terribly well on said country disguised as anti crt bills; that couldn’t be a bigger understatement. Though politicians making use of a culture war to pass legislation that’d normally never pass is hardly surprising.

People who express such deep sympathy for those who died over self-afflicted situations baffle me. Cuz ofc it's sad someone died, but the person in question sure as hell didn't give a rat's ass about themselves or those around them to NOT lead themselves to death. It's like tiktokers who do dangerous shit and then die bc of it. They knew NOT do it and still did it so save your care.

That apology sounds like it was written at gun point. Also did you hear about the DHS’s new “misinformation” board/committee thing; tbh I’m not sure if it’s a paper tiger and/or unconstitutional overreach, either way it got announced literally a few days after Elon buying Twitter.

Many people are genetically predisposed to addiction because of familial history with it. Some people also grow up around it and have much more access to it. It’s still that person’s fault for committing to doing whatever drug they do but all of us do stupid things when we’re young and if you have something like that readily available… a person could do it without understanding the consequences and then it’s too late. A person doesn’t choose their family or the environment they’re born into so that part of it isn’t really their fault. BUT, I agree, they most certainly take responsibility for doing drugs in the first place. And certainly if they continue to that’s still on them. A lot of people just aren’t educated enough to know what they’re getting into, sadly. Love your videos and particularly your streams of consciousness bro! Just figured I’d respond with another perspective. Keep up the good work and love to see your growth 😎📈📈📈

Oddly enough a lot of 12 step programs take the opposite approach. The first step is usually admitting you have a problem (which is good) but then admitting you are powerless over your addiction and need a "higher power" and to turn and trust them to help you. I have no problem with people finding comfort in religion. Hell I'm what many would consider a "regretful atheist". I would love to have faith, and could easily fake it, shit I grew up Catholic, but it would be theater. I'm incredibly jealous of people with faith who are comforted by knowing in their heart what will happen to them when they die. I don't know and it terrifies me, but I digress. Now admittedly there's future steps in most programs that discuss taking responsibility for mistakes and admitting them, making amends with people you hurt, etc. But I think starting off by telling an addict that they have no power to stop their own addiction and must turn to a "higher power" to actually stop is robbing them of any agency and ultimately any responsibility. It's almost like the addict can turn around and go "well, see, I didn't know about the higher power till now, so you can't blame me for my addiction since I had no chance before".

In 2019, 20, and 21 respectively I lost a Grandmother, Grandfather, and aunt, each of which had a lasting impact on my life, and are now memories. And yet, I remain devoid of the vices of drugs or alcohol. If you use family loss as an excuse, you are 1. Simply looking for a means to justify the use of said vices to your addiction-addled self. And 2. An asshole that uses familial tragedy as an excuse to cultivate your own downward spiral. They didn’t die so you could jump in after them with orange-tinged skin while choking on your own vomit.
