Nice! Every time I see you with the light Hitachi drill it makes me smile. They have to be the most durable designs of drill and hammer drivers for this weight class. I've had a set for over ten years and my son built his house using one. We've certainly abused the tool, but they've never broken.

I did this under my deck that covers my cement deck underneath. I didn’t use straps below the sheets. I used j-channel at the end against the house and sides. On the side that the water runs to, I turned a piece of j-channel on its side to make a small gutter. It works great unless it’s a real downpour. It has been there for 20 years with zero issues.

I did the same thing but had to remove it a few years later. I accounted for the pitch so that water would properly drain but didn’t consider the amount of debris that would also accumulate (small organic matter, leaves, dirt) and eventually that debris built up and restricted the water flow. It caused problems with mold, harbored mosquitos and eventually rotted the supports. Hopefully you don’t have these issues.

I did the same thing 15 years ago under my deck using corrugated plastic sheets from home depot. I used 8' 2x4s bolted in the middle to make an "X" support to hold the panels over my head during installation. Its worked great. Sure nice to have a usable patio under my deck during the rain.

I'm happy to have found your sentex homepage with all its very interesting links. I read your, "Why computer user interfaces stopped evolving" and noted your, "There are things that could be done better, but being able to comprehend how the system works is much more important to me." I've thought the same for years, i.e. I want to know how and where things work and are stored so I can take control of the computer. Newer interfaces that hide the works maybe great for routine work, but they defeat creativity, manipulation and and problem solving by the end user. ~~ I come at this from close to 40 years working with various systems starting in 1967 on an IBM 360/20 and a card sorter.

I have a large below-grade water tank that sits adjacent to the house at a distance of about 20". It consists of 4" thick concrete walls, and a 4" thick cover which sits flush across the 4 walls, giving a nice square finish. The dimensions are approx. 20' L x 8' wide x 8' deep. It is in very good condition - no cracking or leaking and the roof seems to be structurally sound. However, I would like to move my water storage to a location more accessible to the animals and the fields, and I don't want that water so close to the house. And, at the same time I also need a root cellar and this seems perfect for the job. But, I don't like the idea of a heavy concrete slab overhead ... so I figured to remove the concrete cover, replace it with a treated wooden frame to act as a decking surface, but with a metal runoff below it, as Matthias has just done, and then attach the entire unit as a skirt to the upper portion of the walls. I think I could achieve the necessary water-proofing, air-flow and and safety this way. And, as a bonus, I end up with a decking area just next to the house. Does anybody have any opinion or experience on something like this ?

This should work in the winter as long as the deck above the "roof" is kept free of snow or is not in the winter sun. Big problem in Colorado is the sun melts the snow on the deck when the air temp is below freezing which runs unto the water collector below and refreezes. Then the roof gets torn off the deck. No big deal in your case if that does happen.

Thinking about Matthias' early remark about the wind making it rattle. Even though it's now secured from that problem by virtue of the added framing, I still wonder if there's enough lift from the wind to move and work at it over time, perhaps fatiguing the metal in those 9 screws, eventually breaking them? A lot of their length is exposed between the metal and the deck on the middle and lower positions. I suppose it depends on how much wind it gets?

Functional, every-day Joe for the win. However, it looks like the mid and end spans are very shallowly attached. Should add yet another camera, and we can all watch it every spring to see how long it lasts.
