Sir, you are a treasure. I'm 65 and playing sax as much as I can. I was a music major back in the day, even a 1/2 scholarship. Long story. I pour thorough your stuff and try to get even the smallest part into my playing. Thank you.

That is really cool. I can learn all of those notes but I feel the need to get the chords figured out first. I am just like that. It helps me to know where the heck I am. Great video. I'm going to tear it apart for a couple of days. Thanks for posting it.

Rick - loved how you captured Metheny's sound here. Would love to hear your thoughts on how you conceptualize applying these ideas while the changes are flying by like Metheny does, rather than over a static chord. Perhaps a Part II...?

This is awesome! I've always loved Pat Metheny's chromaticism. It sounds like a roller coaster getting ready to leave the tracks but all the while staying on top of the chord tones in a weird but musical way. I gota learn this lick.

Thanks so much rick, you dont have to do these vids but we really appreciate the time you put into spreading the knowledge. What programs does pat use to make his guitar sound like anyother instrument? Or does it have to be a midi guitar
@picksalot16 жыл бұрын
Rick - can you do a video on guitar articulations? For example, legato: hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, and how to best use them in different styles of music. In your video, many of the hammer-ons, etc. start on a weak beat, and help create a certain stylistic, jazzy feel. How do you approach playing legato on fingerstyle acoustic/nylon string guitar when transcribing music originally written for instruments that can play very long, smooth legato lines, like on the violin (e.g. Bach violin sonatas and partitas)? It can be very difficult or impractical to get a smooth legato when changing strings.

Just practice the line and pull out any bits you like. That's how you build vocabulary. One 'word' at a time. Practice them around the cycle and assimilate it into your own playing. It's a language.

so basically you play a chord, then you choose a scale and play the notes of that scale, and then you play the next chord. sometimes you add chromatic notes that are not in the scale you play.

My question: how can pat play only over Am7, and think about so much different and outside harmonies in that speed. is it totally flow? how long do you thinke, he looks forward for the lines? what brain do a player need for this...:-)
