Building a little floatie to install under the outboard pod. Tying to improve our "a little heavy in the back" project boat.

Nice, honest work! Looking forward to seeing how this modification performs in the water. As mentioned previously: engine mounting height, prop diameter and pitch, weight distribution,(particularly towards the bow), and the option of trim tabs are variables you can further experiment with, as needed. Thanks!

I think we are brothers from the same Mother . I am in the end of building a bracket fr my 1957 Lone Star ElDorado . I put a 6” Bobs Machine Shop jack plate on mine to give me more options for motor height. I’m 65 and love building boats !

I was going to say 😁, you can cut a recess in the bottom where the plug is, with a half height alum tube/pipe welded in, a few inches long. This way the floatation bracket can be deeper, the deeper the better. And you will have access to the plug.

Always good ideas, theory is there, ingenuity. I admire your yankee frugality and recycling parts. That said, I personally might not have skimped on the foam, would have used a closed cell marine quality. As for cavitation, my fingers are crossed it doesn’t happen. Looking forward to the next video!

Thank you Howe! If water of quantity is discovered when removing the drain plug, replacing the foam would not be a huge undertaking. I am betting it will be fine. Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting! Barry

The spray foam is closed cell. If it doesn’t act like a sponge, it’s closed cell. Same goes for the spray foam used in homes, like the 2 part froth pak stuff at Lowe’s. I used the Lowe’s stuff on my Grady in stringer grids, it’s the same as original foam Grady used, to me. The 2 part liquid 2 lb density pourable marine stuff like Total Boat is cheaper than 2 part spray and good for his project since it can be poured in. But it is still more expensive. I also used 2 inch thick sheet XPS foam insulation, the purple stuff at the Depot, in my Grady - spend more time in labor but lower cost too.
@robertp7209
@robertp7209 3 жыл бұрын
@@barrylukebuilds7894 - you can check up on it occasionally since you have the drain plug there. My Grady original bracket has two foam blocks in in side, preformed, and two drain holes on the bottom. With three access round poly plates in the top. I check the drain plugs every few years, get a little out perhaps a pint or so.

adding that plug underneath will likely cause cavitation issues for the outboard. maybe cutting a recess up, or placing drain at bottom of back edge with a perforated drain pipe along bottom internal edge would be better. nice work otherwise.

Did you consider using two pods and putting them under the wings? They could stay up above the bottom to clear all your through hulls. They would provide more lift even if they were not totally submerged. Just mind doodling...

Mr Luke, you are one heck of a craftsman and put great care in your fab and creations. I mean no disrespect I fear this attachment will be ripped off the bottom of original bracket. Why wouldn’t you have matched the thickness of the plate aluminum to fit up the sides to the top of bracket. The old makos had foam filled brackets and with time became I very heavy sponge. Good luck with the build and please be safe
@barrylukebuilds7894

Hook Thank you for the kind words! Several reasons I went with the thin aluminum but mostly because I didn’t know if it was going to work. I didn’t know if the added buoyancy was going to make a difference and I didn’t know how it would affect the engine. It worked and as long as the light weight version holds up it will stay. It will be easy to check for water infiltration just by removing the plug occasionally. Barry

PS: polystyrene will immediately dissolve if gasoline (always some around) contacts it. The blue board and pink at the hardware store are much more resistant. Polyiso would be best if available. Not sure how the spray cans react to solvents.

If memory serves me that outboard weighs about 520# and the 225 duplex weighs the same but you drop to a 200hp and that weight 425lbs basically the same motors but setup different on the fuel system !

The 250 E-Tec weighs 100 lbs less that the original twin 90's. That's kinda what I was going by but I underestimated the affect the setback caused.

@@barrylukebuilds7894 I have a v4 110hp Evinrude and it’s around 200lbs , there’s not much weight with that silencer they have ! But for a 2 stroke it’s an elephant ! I’m wondering if a Jack plate mounted on the transom would have been different , I’ve seen ones 12” away from the transom but not sure if that’s enough room for that outboard an older one yes for sure !

@@barrylukebuilds7894 don't get me wrong I'm. No expert I'm just curios. I had a shetland 20ft boat with an Armstrong bracket on the back and a 90hp yamaha. Because it was about 30" from the back of the boat you could lift it too about 3 " higher to get optimum performance but as your basical extending the Hull of your boat if you had of raised it I think you will starve the prop of water. There was a brilliant video on here explaing the science behind it. The boat I had was called Darley rose which I will try and find the link for you but was a good video on engine brackets. But you can try searching the name Darley rose kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qpZ7mLZmspu4c4E.html

What the reason or theory behind the floating transom. I believe the reason behind the external set back is give less prop was, plus act like a Canadian plate plus also rear swim deck.lus more inside the boat.???

Nice work Barry. I would like to know if it worked and how much stern water line lift you got from adding flotation? I have a 24 ft. Boston whaler with twin 200HO Evinrudes and was thinking of getting extension platform. What are your thoughts?

Thank you Jonas! It made a difference, not a huge amount, but better. I can now stand in the back with out water coming in the drains. Two people cannot. I can see no drawbacks at all. Doesn’t weigh much, no moving parts, no maintenance, does not affect the engine performance at all. Just wish I would have built my floor a little higher! Barry

Steve Have used the boat several times post swim step floatee modification. It now floats about 1 1/2" higher. So one person in the back ok ,two people and water comes in the scuppers. I was hoping for a little more lift. I lowered the engine do to cavitation issues but I also brought the motor closer to the transom so I should have lowered it more. I still cavitate if I give full throttle at take off. I am out of bolt holes so lowering the motor any more will be a little tricky. Other than that all is well. In hind sight I could have installed the deck a couple of inches higher, would have been no trouble at all. I also should have installed the swim step a couple of inches lower. Thanks for watching! @@barrylukebuilds7894 Hi Barry, Thank you for getting back to me. I have been watching loads of videos about ourboard pods because Im converting my 27 foot SeaRay to twin outboards when the boat gets lifted end of March, unlike you struggling in the heat here in U.K. need worry abour the cold. I will be using twin 20 inch shafts, if I put just one engine in the middle it would need a 25 inch shaft. What length did you use? Looked to me like your engine needed come up further out the water but also go down for the cavitation plate to line up with bottom of the V. Once again thank you for getting back to me, really been enjoying your videos. I will be uploading to my channel as I go. Happy New Year to you and your family. Steve on south coast U K.
