Hey friends! Here's a new warm-up exercise video, where I'll show you how to add pentatonic licks & fills over the common progression D-Cadd9-G. Specifically, I'll focus on 4 phrases from the D-minor pentatonic scale -- and demonstrate how to play these between the chords you're strumming. If adding licks and fills from a scale is new to you, don't worry -- honestly it's pretty new stuff to me, and in this video I'll explain the chords + fretboard + general advice on how to approach adding the most basic of fills.
Video timestamps:
- 0:00 Preview & lesson summary

- 16:54 Bonus: same riff in Drop-D (w/ tab)
- 19:10 Bonus: 6 other riffs from this scale
The song this is inspired from
This lesson is inspired by the song "Down Low" by Town Mountain ft. Tyler Childers, which was sent in by request. A lesson for that song may be coming one day, but in the meantime I wanted to share this one explaining the basics of the lead riffs & fills you hear in that song.

David, honestly, your lessons are simply so well done. I’ve watched a ton of other instructors. I picked up guitar late in life - over the past 11 years starting at 50. My training has be a broad survey of what other’s do to teach guitar. There are some good ones out there, and some stinkers. Your stuff is some of the best. The way you break down the instruction and build the student’s comprehension is masterful. I especially enjoyed watching your from-scratch break down of Prine’s Souvenirs was amazing. I am a proud follower of your work on Patreon and it’s worth every penny.

Hi David, just wanted to say thank you for these videos. I've bounced around to many online teachers (still luckily learned to play a bit) and I have never found such clear, organized instruction. The way you lay out your videos is so well thought out, every take building seamlessly on the next. I can't imagine the amount of time it takes to create your breakdowns and create these video, but I want you to know I deeply appreciate the care you take.

Thank you! 6 months into playing, getting bored and stopped making progress, exactly what I needed exactly when I needed it. very...very good lesson, logical layout and presentation and very well taught. Loved the on screen tabs and the pace, hoping there are more to come along these lines, thank you very kindly once again!

Thanks David. I play a lot of stuff in D and dropped D and now I know that the notes I'm using are in a Dm pentatonic. Really helpful analysis and breakdown of making these riffs. Looking forward to putting them to good use.

Enjoyed this lesson! But I’m confused about the music - this seems to be in key of D major, as the chord progression begins and ends in D. But what’s a Cadd9 doing here? C# is in D, not C. And D minor pentatonic surprises me, if we’re in D major. It does sound great, which is what matters ... but what’s going on from a music theory standpoint?

Think of it as playing in G using a D minor pentatonic.

Go to the 10 fret using a minor pentatonic scale. Then you can see that it is a Dm/Fmaj scale. F-g-a-Bb-C-d-e
