Well, first of all color me impressed. This is the first video I've seen of yours. I don't keep fish with my axolotl, I would never risk it. I don't advise anyone to do so and the trend of pet-tubers with improper care for their animals has me nervous with titles like that. I honestly came just to tell you not to do that. I'll do some bullets. >White clouds are a solid choice, they're small, tolerate cold waters that axolotls need, don't have any spines or release toxic substances while stressed. Arguably the best choice, even if I wouldn't do it myself. They do run the risk of being eaten though, so long as you're aware. >I'm impressed you did research and aren't just doing this for views/your aesthetics are are aware the damage Mochi can do to the fish and what they can do to him and have a plan for when it goes South. Foresight like that is rare. >I would have still quarantined the fish. I'm just a really paranoid, antsy pet keeper, even if it's a solid pet store that you trust unless they treat their water for parasites it's not worth the chance to me. I've been going to my local mom and pop for years and I always quarantine any animal they sell me. >Putting the white clouds in a bucket and netting them out one by one to not introduce their tank water into Mochi's habitat was a fantastic idea. Props to you. >Love that you don't keep lights on your axolotl constantly. >Love how healthy your leopard gecko looks and that he's not just in a ten gallon, unrelated to all that haha. This probably sounds patronizing as all Hell, but I'm legit impressed by your care and hope you continue to do awesome.

Christopher, I can't tell you how much I appreciate this comment. I don't know if you've scrolled a bit through the other comments but quite a few people have been telling me that this was a terrible idea/my axo is going to die/etc...someone even said I was a borderline abuser?! 😬 I was really second guessing myself about the choice to add fish - even though the fish and axo are actually doing fine and still ignoring each other. I wasn't sure what to do because thus far my experiences have contradicted what they've been telling me. I really try to take constructive criticism, so I was considering doing another video on this explaining my choices better and giving more context for any others who might be taking my advice and give a chance for people to share their thoughts. I just want to thank you for giving me some confidence that I'm at least doing some things right :)

@@TheTurtleGirl I'm glad I could help! I did read the comments, and can understand their fears, even I was ready to be like "No, stop" but the content of your video proved me wrong. My guess is it's a similar to the discouraging comments. Came to tell you not to do axies with fish and didn't watch the video just "educated" you and moved on. Our hobby is one that leaves little room for error and people take it very seriously. It seems in recent years some, and I won't name names, have put a stigma on channels like ours. If that makes sense.

UPDATE VIDEO: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jtiYetN8u8jRgoE.html ALSO, please read for some additional thoughts. Quite a few of you have been expressing concern about the axolotl eating the fish or the fish nibbling Mochi's gills, the axolotl choking, etc. Rest assured that I am monitoring the tank very closely and should anything happen I have another separate tank (fish only) that the white clouds can reside in if it doesn't work out. The reason I went with white clouds (and I wish I went more into this in the video) is not only because they are cold tolerant, but also fast, and thus far have avoided the axolotl entirely. They're also small enough that I believe that if they are eaten, the axolotl would be able to pass them without issue. I've also spoken with a few other owners who have kept fish (and white clouds specifically) with their axolotls with success. I'm doing my best to do this as safely as possible for both parties. If you have any other suggestions or concerns feel free to leave them in the comments as I am more than happy to take them into consideration. Remember to always do your research when it comes to cohabitating pets, especially different species, so that it can be done safely (and sometimes it's better to not do it all if you're not confident) 😊 thanks!

Sorry that you had to face all this backlash. The axolotl community is very vocal about its opinions, especially since it is an exotic pet and there isn't a lot of scientific research out there on best care requirements. I think that probably some axolotl owners had bad experiences with certain species of fish, and then because people are so protective of their axolotls, they made it a rule that no fish are ever allowed with axolotls. I'm with you here - I personally would be willing to try out small fish as potential tankmates/feeders and just monitor the animals carefully. Axolotls eat fish in nature, so they can digest them. If the fish nibbled on the axolotl gills, the axolotl would regenerate them over time. Fish keepers deal with trying out fish tank mates all the time, and if there's aggression, one of the species can be removed. Not a problem. :)

We'll see! I''ve actually seen and talked to a couple people who have done it successfully, and if not...I didn't really lose much in trying. Unfortunate for the fish if it doesn't work out, but they were feeders to begin with.
@HoneyAimelysaVilla
@HoneyAimelysaVilla 5 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately for the axolotl you mean, fish can give them internal diseases & internal damage. I’m not sure you have the experience yet to look out for those types of things yet. Also just a note, I could understand you not caring about the life of the fish if you intentionally bought them as “feeder fish” but you claim you bought them as tank mates so I’m confused as how you can say “you didn’t lose much” I mean even kids who buy gold fish from the “feeder” section & really care about their pet gold fish don’t shrug it off as “oh well, it was only a feeder fish”.
@TheTurtleGirl
@TheTurtleGirl 5 жыл бұрын
Honey Aimelysa Villa hey Honey, you bring up some fair points. You are right in that I probably wouldn't be able to tell if the axo had something wrong internally. All I know is that he is consistently active, eating, and pooping regularly - even since adding the fish. However, I really do care about the axolotl's health, and so because I can't really tell how he might be doing internally, I am considering moving the white clouds to their own fish only tank...especially given all the responses here. As for your second point, I have to apologize for not being clearer in the video. You see, I also keep turtles, and when you keep turtles you usually find that any "tankmates" are also potential feeders. Because of this, I have a bad habit of using the words interchangeably when it comes to putting fish with a potential predator. I see it as they might end up as tankmates or they might end up as feeders. I don't mean to be insensitive to the fish or devalue their lives more or less by calling them feeders vs tankmates. I just feel that if they are eaten it was a potential consequence due to the fact that they are living with a predator, but sometimes I try to be optimistic and call them tankmates. Hopefully that makes sense to you and I'm sorry that my choice of words wasn't very clear. Thanks again for your concerns and input, I'm actually considering on making a video on all this so that others can be educated on this and not follow my example without fully knowing what they're getting into 😉

Please do some research before making incorrect assumptions. Mountain minnows can safely be bred in a separate tank and added to your axolotls tank as needed. This can easily be done and with ghost and cherry shrimp as well. This with a well designed extra large tank will give your axolotl a greatly enriched and much happier life. They are intelligent creatures and Im sure although they can be kept healthy they do not enjoy being in a glass bottom tank with 1 or two fake plants and a few rocks being fed pellets their entire lives.

Because anything an axolotl can eat it usually WILL eat, and most fish can damage its insides (if eaten) or get stuck causing them to choke. You happen to have chose a minnow (which is a kind of carp) & those are EXTREMELY BONEY fish, making it more dangerous. Any axolotl breeder will tell you NOT to do that because the risk of having axies & fish together outweighs the aesthetic of having a pretty tank. Those who happen to pair them are far and few between (& you haven’t had you’re axie very long, 9 months, these guys live yrs). Also you have it in a small tank, tho they can live in a 10 gal, it’s 20 gal that’s recommended (& 10 gals more for every axie added, so a 30 gal for 2, 40 gal for 3, etc). Another thing to watch out for is the way you didn’t acclimate the fish, trusting the breeder isn’t a factor, it’s about making sure that your fish don’t die of shock from temperature changes. If you want more helpful information I’d go to a Facebook Group cuz it looks like whatever you’re googling is giving you terrible info.

Honey Aimelysa Villa thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts, I actually really appreciate that you're trying to help me out here 😊 I already replied to your other comment but I'd like to respond to a couple of things you mentioned here specifically. The tank I have isn't actually 10 gallons, but 15, and Mochi is not yet full grown, only about 6-7ish inches at this point. Down the road, I do plan on upgrading him to a 20 long once he's larger. Also, I did acclimate the fish for over 20 minutes to avoid temperature shock, which I mentioned in the video (00:20 and 00:52). Anyways, those thing being said, if you'd be willing to direct me to a couple open minded axolotl fb groups I'd love to check them ou Oh and btw, I saw that you do Disney stuff on your channel....I gotta say, I love Disney and it super cool that you do all that. I'm an avid Disney pin trader myself 😄

@@HoneyAimelysaVilla A tad late but my two cents- Axolotls have rudimentary lungs and physically are unable to "choke." While bony, White Clouds are easily passed due to their softer and smaller bones. While they can and will be eaten when given the chance, their survival nearly doubles as a schooling fish. Clouds along with Rosy Reds are both cold tolerant and crafty buggers that can co-exist as feeder fish in an Axie tank. Unlike Tetras, Guppies and Bettas, these fish aren't attracted to bright colors and wont nip at gills so the Axolotl will be safe. The only danger for the axolotl in this case is obesity if they manage to snag one to many Clouds in one go. (More fatty and greasy than most). If you care for the feeder fish, keep in mind that they are just that. Feeder fish. But the axolotl is 100% fine as long as the feeder doesn't have back spines or is larger than their head.

People are so condescending to younger KZfaqrs. I guess just rest knowing you young'uns are more successful, emotionally well-adjusted and probably more rich than the curmudgeons that put you all down. Keep going! White cloud minnows do not possess exoskeleton, making them relatively safe for the axolotl, as well as not being a choking risk. They also do not nip at the gills. Basic research confirms this.

I've heard that its a bad idea to have fish in with an axolotl! Either the axolotl will eat them, or they'll bully the axolotl and nibble at his fins (cause they look like worms). Really they do best alone, but there's a chance it might work!

They are all different with what they like to eat and who they'll share a tank with happily (I just found a guppy fry in with mine that must have transferred with plants i moved a few days ago, he was fine and v confident swimming in front of them no problem, I had mine in with dojo loaches before but the axos didnt like the fast movement of the loaches or being bumped into so I moved them out (no gill nibbling just lots of being barged into). Mine have just been moved to a large shallow tank which they really seem to like, makes em easier to feed as mine wont take any food off the bottom so its either live or hand fed. In the shop I got them from they were on catfish pellets but only ate what dropped right in front of their faces. I just found live or hand feeding much cleaner and less wasteful on food. They stand up on their back legs when i feed them now and grab at the long tweezers shaking it like an alligator hehehe. Took a while to figure out what my particular guys like and they are all diff personalities and fav foods. I did find they went through my malaysian trumpet snails and wiped them out, they seem less keen on ramshorns or pond snails however their tank is fairly snail free tbh ;) Enjoy your axolotl, they are right little characters arent they ;) My female always is grinning and my male always frowning LOL ;)

NickVon 43 they won’t “get along” they don’t have it programmed in there brain to think “ I’m going to go make some new fishy friends!” All they have are survival instincts and those don’t consist of “friendship”.

Hi is it okay if i put betta fish with my axo? Thanks
@TheTurtleGirl
@TheTurtleGirl 3 жыл бұрын
Would not recommend it. Axolotls are cold water and bettas are tropical. Not to mention that betta fins are basically asking to be bitten at by the axo and the axo's gills by the betta.

minnows are known to be naturally aggressive fish and usually nip at other fish. if you want to add fish i would suggest guppies (feeder or normal guppies) but i don’t think the minnows would be a right fit.

Hey Turtle Girl, your videos are super helpful and I love them! I have one question about Hoku’s tank, it looks pretty big but you said it was 29 gallons? Where can I buy a 29 gallon tank with the same dimensions as yours?
@TheTurtleGirl
@TheTurtleGirl 5 жыл бұрын
Yep 29 gallons... dimensions are 30x12x18 I want to say it's a pretty standard tank. Although to be completely honest I think it's a bit small once your turtle is a juvenile already and a 40 gallon breeder would be better...I'm going to upgrade him to at least that over the summer

what about cleaner fish like snails or pleco fish? would they be a good way to keep an axolotl tank clean?
@TheTurtleGirl
@TheTurtleGirl 5 жыл бұрын
Lots of water changes...I'd be careful with snails because that axolotl could choke on them. The difficult thing with axos is that they prefer cooler water, so many tropical fish wouldn't thrive in the same tank.
@tripholly09
@tripholly09 5 жыл бұрын
No they can attach onto the Axoltol and cause some serious damage, removing the slim and skin.
@melissathompson9700
@melissathompson9700 5 жыл бұрын
Plecos are not “cleaner fish” they can grow to be 24 inches and need a lot of space. Many shops sell them small and say they clean the tank, as if they’re an accessory, but they are a large and complicated fish that need a lot of space..
@sophielawless4853
@sophielawless4853 Жыл бұрын
You shouldn’t be risking it when you’re making decisions on your pets part. The safest way is the best way and it always stresses me to see fish that will nip at the axolotl being kept with it when we are supposed to be preserving their health. Even if they don’t injure him just them swimming around could stress out your axolotl as they prefer to be left alone

Hey Turtle girl I have a question my red ear slider turtles are becoming very picky eaters, my question is can I feed them superworms as a staple diet? They don't touch their pellets or dried shrimp anymore, when they were younger they loved it but like I said it seems they are getting very picky they will not touch any kind of greens either. But they go nuts when I feed them tilapia fillet, and or boiled chicken, and the superworms. So I was thinking maybe if I buy a bunch of superworms and gut load the superworms with vegetation and calcium that they can eat the superworms as a staple diet but I'm not sure? They are now about 7 months old. Please help🤷‍♂️

I feel so awful for your Axolotl. It's obvious that you're going to have to learn the hard way why Axolotl and fish don't mix And some poor little fishy so has to pay the price. And hopefully not an Axolotl soul. Keep tongs nearby- keep your Axolotl in very cold water so that it doesn't move so much and try to remove the fish without hurting your Axolotl
@TheTurtleGirl
@TheTurtleGirl 5 жыл бұрын
I really appreciate your concern and am definitely keeping a very very close eye on the both of them! Up to this point they've largely ignored each other. Although I'm not sure what I'd need tongs for? Are you saying that the axo might choke on the fish? I'd be happy to hear any suggestions you have :)
