Adding Gas struts to an Outdoor Storage box

A friend of mine had an outdoor brick box in his courtyard with a rotting old lid. Made of old decking boards, it was heavy and let a lot of rain and debris into the box. It was only useful for roaches!
I decided to help him out and design and replace the old one with a custom split lid with gas struts. He can now easily store things in there out of the weather, and retrieve them with ease!
Thanks for watching, and let me know if you have any questions or comments!

Finally, someone who has filmed it from the inside of the box. My brain just could not figure out how to place the mountings for it to close properly.

interesting design for those lids.. I would think that you can't open the right one without first opening the left one due to the aluminum flashing that was installed? Also seems like the weather stripping on the sides wasn't necessary since there are huge gaps toward the back that don't look like they were closed. the stripping on the front also doesn't seem necessary due to the slant on the lid, any water that lands on it would run off the overhanging edge, though I guess it will dampen the lid when being closed.

That’s right, the lids open in sequence because of the aluminium channel, which works very well to keep water out. The black weather stripping for the front and sides was chosen purely to keep the noise down, the lids close with some force! The stripping along the L and R edges was purely added for consistent aesthetics and to slightly minimise water ingress from the sides, but those sides are already very well shaded from rain. If this box was more exposed, I’d definitely close up the sides more.

@@pseudofixWouldn’t it have been easier to add the weather stripping to the lid instead? How is it holding up?

The weather stripping is a rubbery plastic and doesn’t have strong adhesion properties, so I didn’t trust it to stay attached upside down to the lid. Attaching it to the brickwork was the way to go, and yes it’s held up great!

I used www.gasspringsshop.com/gas-spring-calculator/ for the initial measurements, then converted it as best I could to match the gas struts available locally. As seen in the video, a slight adjustment in position needed to be made.
