Adding non-HomeKit devices to Apple Home with Homebridge

As I started down the automation journey with my Tesla, I found areas where I could automate my home as well. And with my new home, I finally decided to take the plunge to add smart devices. But since I have devices, such as Ring & Nest, that doesn't work with Apple Home, I needed to find a solution to bring them in without replacing every device I own. That solution is Homebridge. I show how to install Homebridge. This video would be the stepping stone for the rest of the Home Automation I plan to show in the future.

hello, i have an issue when adding the bridge to the home app, Its giving me an error that the accessory not found

This doesn't work on M1 Macs, the Node.js portion.

after scanning the QR code and clicking "add anyway" it says "cannot add the accessory, unknown error occured" :( nothing in the homebridge logs as well. looks like I need to search further..

Hi, great tool you showed in this video. One question: what happens if i shut down my computer, or just stop the localhost server? Will i still able to use the homebridge, and the automations based on the nonhomekit tools i have? Or i have to keep that homebridge server running forever?

Hi there! Yea, you'll need to have Homebridge running at all times. If you shut down your computer or localhost server, then Apple won't be able to communicate to Homebridge. You can do automations on any of the devices that appear on your Apple Home! Hope this helps.

@@UNPLGD Thanks. So it is necessary to have a permanent webserver at home. If I think about the automations, we have to underline it. Maybe a NAS is the easiest solution to run the webserver instantly.

@@GaborOltvanyi yes, I personally use a NAS. I briefly mentioned that in my video. Another option is HOOBS.

This is EXACTLY what I wanted to do with my devices however I may have gone the wrong route with HomeAssistant. Is HomeBridge a completely different OS? Should I remove HA from my Raspberry Pi and install HomeBridge instead?

Homebridge isn't an OS, it's just a program. So you shouldn't have to remove anything. I think HomeAssistant is very similar to Homebridge, but haven't messed with it. You should be able to run both at the same time.

Does this work with ALL non Homekit devices? I have multiple smart home devices, Bulbs, Switches, Doorbell etc. Would all of these be able to work on Homekit using Homebridge?

As long as there's a plugin for it, it'll work. All the major brands I've searched for are on there. There are over 2000 plugins!

I can look into it. I actually switched to Starling Home Hub for Google/Nest. Easy setup and provides more features!

so i downloaded homebridge, got my apps installed and i’ve done everything in the video. but when i restart my home bridge to get the apps to work on home, i don’t see it on the apple home.

I have garage opener in smart life but when I add smart life to Homebridge it’s not showing there neither door bell, can you please help me adding those

On Homebridge, you might want to look at the "Accessories" tab. Do you see it there? On the logs, are there any errors?

@@UNPLGD I have a download again coz it doesn’t work when my laptop goes sleep mode or turned off so I found it useless but looking to buy raspbery Pi , can you suggest anything else to keep them on ?

Yea, you'll have to have it on a machine that's always on! I have mine on a NAS. Raspberry PI should work, or even take a look at HOOBS. It's the same thing, but in a standalone device: hoobs.org/
