I did a multichannel recording using Adobe Audition for my WWI layout using an MP3 player I control from my phone. I also have built in ambient sounds from a farm and another set from a signal box. I have used railway station and city sounds too before.

Brilliant! I love Adobe Audition, tons of possibilities and so much control over all of the aspects of audio recording and exporting. Having the sound is such a delight when operating as well. Not to mention it beats just hearing the gears grind on the locos too.

Definitely adds another layer of discovery on the layout. Plus it's fun operating a sea port with seagulls in the background. :)

I’ve been thinking about doing something like this. I have an old discman that I could use as the sound source, burning the sound files to CD from GarageBand. Your ideas are really helpful.

George Bono thanks for the sub and comment! I have a clip of how it all turned out in my October update on the channel. Feel free to check that out! I think it turned out pretty well, it’s harder to REALLY tell what it sounds like via video but in person it’s fantastic ambient noise.

Awesome, I hope that it helped a bit. I'm no expert and it was fun tinkering and doing a bunch of research to figure out what could be done for a low cost. It definitely adds an extra layer to the modeling. Thanks for watching!

Loved this. I work with Ableton as well for music and radio. Somehow never occurred to me to just mix an immersive soundtrack for the railroad.

Thanks! Not thinking through it carefully, I should've included a snippet at the end of how it all turned out. The next update video (October I think??) open up with a rougher version of how it turned out. You still don't get the full effect, but you'll get the idea. I will say, despite the limitations with such tiny speakers AND a lot of noise, it's surprisingly effective and definitely worth the effort if you're looking to add that "little bit extra" of an immersive experience. Even if you're not jamming a bunch of sounds in like I did, a few car horns, machinery sounds and birds here and there change the feel of the layout so much. It would be perfect in your industrial section. Ableton is great! Super easy to use once you get the gist of how it's laid out and all of the components. Thanks for giving the video a watch. :)

@@TheMidlandDorchesterRailroad I’ve been considering just mounting some larger speaker sets in the train room out of sight. It lacks the portability and integration that onboard speakers would have but maybe provides a higher quality with frequency splitting. Maybe will compose some ambient background music for the ‘night’ setup.

Hey Rob, thanks for the comment! Hopefully the video was a little helpful for you, I was pretty much fumbling my way through the whole project and my brain was only one step ahead of my hands. There are definitely A LOT of different options for doing sound on a layout/diorama and this was just what I ended up doing. It worked out alright and I'm happy with the results. Have fun exploring all of the different possibilities when you get around to doing one for yourself, there's no shortage of options. As far as the switches are concerned, I've received a few requests for how I have done that, I'll do what I can do get a review/how-I-did video up with some greater detail. Thanks for watching and following along!

When you look at the waveforms of the files, you clearly see when you simply pan you lose a lot of the recorded sound. If you want to make sure you retain all of the sounds within the stereo recordings, you need to mono sum the stereo tracks by unlinking the stereo tracks, set both to -3dB and pan accordingly. You're smart to use the wav files as they are uncompressed, but in all practicality you're fine using MP3 as long as it's over 96k. Nobody can tell the difference in the ear, especially coming from a tiny speaker. In fact, you would do well to EQ out the lower end of the recordings (maybe some highs) to fit within the spec of the speakers. This would help prevent distortion at higher volumes. All in all, a really great video.
@TheMidlandDorchesterRailroad
@TheMidlandDorchesterRailroad 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! You’re totally right with regards to mono and stereo, ducking the dB’s and even EQing it to whatever specs the speakers are. Since the video was put out a few months back, I have definitely taken the time to do all of those things and with such tiny speakers, it can make a big difference for sure.

Thanks for the comment Daryl! I’m right there with you, with the sound locos. Adding the sound was a pretty easy “fix” for that too. And was a one night project, which I always appreciate. Good luck with putting together yours, I’m no expert but would love to be a resource if you want one. :)

Ni not very much explained on the tech side and no audio examples???
@TheMidlandDorchesterRailroad
@TheMidlandDorchesterRailroad 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and for watching! You are correct, I didn't get into the technical side too much because there's a wealth of information floating around on the internet and in most cases, I didn't see it too necessary. Things like frequencies and wave lengths and equalizing the samples based on the specs of the speakers are somewhat subjective for projects like this. I figured someone could do the research and "go more in-depth" if they needed/wanted. The main intent was just to show that a simple detail like adding ambient sound could be done for cheap. As far as the audio examples were concerned, I neglected to add those in and should have. However, there is a little card in the upper right of the video around the 00:13 mark AND in the description of how the audio turned out in the October Layout Update if you want to give it a watch/listen! Thanks again, Sean
