Adding the accordion boot crawl through

This video is my attempt at installing an accordion boot crawl through. I called every kind of business in the neighborhood that did window replacement, rv repair centers, 4wd body shops etc, and alas NONE would install this for me. I'm a nervous nelly about car repairs, so this was a huge nerve wracking deal. It's been in use for over 6 months in the Seattle rain and hasn't leaked, so I finally felt safe to upload the video!
This is also my first attempt at commentating on a video. I don't know how my wife puts up with that squeaky voice. I apologize in advance for the 4 seconds of jigsaw buzzing that damages the audio quality, I'm a wild amateur.

I tried this boot seal on my truck and failed the first try, but figured it out on the 2nd time around. Made a video of my experience. Thanks for your video! It helped me realize it was possible. 👍

I have Never wrote a comment on a video but had to say THANK YOU SO MUCH for this video. Single female that converted my ram 1500 and had no clue how to DIY a pass-thru. This was Exactly what I needed to see. Ordered my boot because of your video and will be attempting this feat tomorrow. Thanks to your video, I expect to be successful. Thank you!!!

I love watching the build videos done by women, because they tend not to hide the difficulties. Guys tend to gloss over the difficulties, so it looks easy on the video. Women tend to show us what it was really like.

I first watched your video last November. I was just gearng up to start my camper shell set up. This weekend I am having an auto glass guy come to remove my rear windshield and install a piece of plexiglass I am cutting to match the windshield. I figured his charge of $75 to remove the old glass from the cab and install my plexiglass is well worth all the time and energy on that end. After he installs it I'll be sliding my camper shell up to it tracing the outline of the front windshield camper cavity, cutting out the hole on the plexiglass, and then installing the boot. I'm so excited and looking so forward to having this. And a big thank you to you for posting this video, you're a big inspiration for me. Thank you very much!

6:12 - A) They make plastic putty knives that won't scratch the paint, but also have a frikkin' handle, so your hand doesn't get such a cramp. I could just feel my thumb getting sore, just watching you struggle with that. B) If you put a bit of vegetable oil all over everything, it keeps the butyl from sticking to your tools, and keeps it from re-sticking to the window frame. In the end, it almost feels as if the oil is magically making the butyl come off. But, instead, it is simply making sure that every single molecule that DOES come off, never sticks back down. And, that is butyl's secret power. Take away it's secret power, and it is easy (easier) to defeat. Just make sure that there is always plenty of oil on the edge of the plastic scraper. Then, you just gotta clean off the oil with some dish soap, then some Windex, then some isopropyl alcohol. Does that take more steps? Yes. But more steps that aren't torturous is good.

Amazing skill, patience and job well done! You should consider using the window removal portion of the video to do a how to remove back glass in a F-150. It could bring thousands more views and possibly more subbers as well. I watched every second of it. Thanks for such a detailed video!

11:07 - I would not say you are being "overly cautious." It has been my experience that any time someone thinks they can hold something in place (including me) to be able to mark more that one or two holes at a time, they are wrong. If you had had some clamps, then you could have clamped the piece in place and done all the marking. But, it seems obvious that you had a VERY limited set of tools available. So you do what you can. The screws are your best clamps. They CANNOT slip.

I tried so hard to not do this project myself! I called every business I could think of, and no one would take it on. Now that I've finished, I can think of a bunch of ways to make it better, but don't want to dare change anything in case I make it leaky 🤯

I have sliding windows between my truck and cap. I would like to know where I could get the accordian boot material so I could make a sealed connection between the two and ventilate the truck cap from the truck air conditioner
@TDOGGisawsome

I’ve seen people use a bike inner tube or other inflatable circular things to make a seal between windows. It’s probably much easier than any permanent solution

Thankyou! I have to move from my home due to financial issues. And my biggest concern was paying someone to do this because I couldn't find a tutorial. Already robbed peter so paul would lift my topper and help me make it water tight as possible.

Definitely hear more road noise, but with all the rest of my gear bouncing about it's the least of my worries 🤣 we've been living on the road for 40 days now, and I'm so glad we have the crawl through! Been camping in foul weather, and needed to stealth camp in the city a couple times. I don't think i could camp without it now :)

@@mytruckcamper1034 Thanks for the quick reply. I have a 92 Yota pickup, so I can't really imagine much more road noise than I already have. Going to go for it. 18 months of having to get out in rain and walk around and hop in back all wet seems like enough time to wait......hahaha

Looks like a tough project but it’s Awesome to have. How is it when it rains? Is it weather sealed? Did you use adhesives or caulking?
@mytruckcamper1034
@mytruckcamper1034 4 жыл бұрын
No adhesives or caulking under the accordion boot, just the butyl rubber under the plastic corner inserts. The website warns to be careful about using chemicals on the boot that might behave like a solvent and damage it. So long as you go slow and get it right the first time (clean surfaces, don't move it or pull it off then on again too much) the metal clips inside the accordion boot grips very firmly onto the edges. I've had it in rainy Seattle for 6 months now, and gone for trips up the freeway in heavy rain and it hasn't leaked yet! I wish had had done this years ago, I'm really enjoying it :)
