I actually have the same meter, i bought it for use with RF amplifiers and a RF probe, because most digital meters go crazy if they are any close to 50 plus watts of RF running into a hacked-together dummy load. You inspired me to do some mods to my meter as well. I did notice the significant error a DC offset introduced on the "AC" scale, figured it out by looking inside the thing (not much to talk about at all), but was too lazy to install a capacitor until now. It's easier when someone's done all the thinking before haha. Thanks a lot for the informative video. Regards, Andrei

Now if i could only fix my cheap Gordak soldering iron to not run the heater full blast every time i'm testing a RF amp lol.

Ran into same problem with meters that were sensitive. This meter does have that internal capacitor that you can use for AC. Just not a great setup having to use it.

If they are not asking you to buy an analog meter, I would hold off. Just use what they provide you.

I have several analog meters that have a resetable protection. The AVO-8 has the mechanism you described for the 30's meter. My Unigor, Pantek and Philips have a contactbreakers, The last 2 use transistors to activate the relais. That works very well.

I doubt you would find a fast enough mechanical protection system that would save the meter during these tests. Most of the event is over in 100us.

The one I purchased was only $15 on Amazon like the one on your video. I bought to practice at home and some in class

Would love to see you do more analog meters. Apparently the Sanwa em7000 is high-end analog meter these days. But the new tekpower TP8260L Is decent. I’ve been pretty impressed with it for the price. Holds its ground with the Sanwa em7000….. there are a lot of times I need a portable analog meter, watching the needle move really comes in handy in certain situations. Obviously neither compare to my benchtop meters… But I wasn’t expecting them to match an 8.5 digit Metrology instrument. Always like to use the solid-state analog meters. Or “FET-vom’s” as there apparently called…. & I’ve had a lot of fun playing with the RadioShack micronta meters from the 80s and 90s. They had several solid state models like the 22-220a but my favorite is the 22-208a. Thanks for your work and time! Always enjoy your content!

Furtunately those glass fuses are easy to replace. Joe what kind of resistors are you using in that fancy box?

Most are Vishay low temp co, 0.1%. Less than 1ohm and the 100M ,1G are Ohmite. Caps are all film or ceramic.

Ooow bomb proof ;-D I think the old avo 8 meter uses the needle trigger breaker. What about stopping the meter slam, reverse diode across the meter module? A germanium diode in series with the meter module would stop reverse slam, but the diode would lose too much unless you tweak R1 perhaps?
@joesmith-je3tq
@joesmith-je3tq 8 жыл бұрын
Certainly more robust than it was and no more glass fuse. It slams pretty good in the forward direction as well. I thought about increasing the size of the dampening cap but would end up giving up some of the response. It would be fun to try and protect a high end analog meter. If I were to design a modern analog meter it would be a hybrid. None of this low impedance rubbish. lol.
@zx8401ztv
@zx8401ztv 8 жыл бұрын
LOL you would make a digital/analog dual display meter, a fet op amp tapped on to the output of the resistor divider to drive the analog meter, the best of both worlds :-D

Right. Or maybe a stepper motor meter. Than again, I haven't used an analog meter in I would guess over 30 years. Talk about beating a dead horse...

Well it was "If I were to design..." I'm sure they have their place but it escapes me what it is. The few times I would have liked the visual effect, I can now get with the Brymen.

can this meter be modyfied to measure crt hearer voltage at 15,6kKz without loading on the filement too much? I have other meters for other works, but most of my digital ones have limited bandwidth (in spec) to about 1khz. UT139c woudn't even pick up voltage at this frequency at all Since i get this exact meter for free, and 16kHz is kind of in acustic range it would only reqire some kind of high impedance buffer, like for a guitar amp that would handle 30V input and output swing, could be even batery powered for "safety". I know that modyfication of the meter is a bad idea , because you are on your own when something goes wrong catasrtofically ,but on the other hand a crt heater rms voltage is only obout 6 V at about 700mA in my case, so sacreficing this meter for that purpouse only wouldn't hurt (less that 6W at low voltahe to blow something up) . What do you think?

What does the waveform look like? Is that 6V peak, p-p, what? What sort of wave shape? Is there any DC bias to it? Do you have a scope that you could provide a screen shot? I could then run a test for you with the meters I have available including this one.
@kokodin5895

I have an Oscilloscope, but only analog one with 10mhz bandwidth. waveform would be a triangular , symmetrical peak around 22V from the bottom, 20us at base, followed by 40us of flat line.Falling edge of the triangular peak is filled in at the bottom and transition to flat line is smooth on that side, raising edge and peak are sharp at corners. I didn't check for dc bias, but my ut139c show the frequency of this waveform, and it wouldn't want to do it with a waveform that does not cross trough 0. Or i just don't know how to use it :] my old ut201 (non rms) show about 5,15V at ac range, ut139c true rms shows 0,0006V (out of bandwidth), service manual of my tv cals for measurment with hp 3403c and rms voltage value of 6,3V at 700mA (ac bad 10V scale) And since i replaced the crt and that is the only voltage i have problem determining value of i am a little cautious about it. I was thinking about making an opamp buffer powered from 3 9V batterys in series. a 500k pot to set ground bias and 2 3 meg resistors, one for input and one as a bias output for the floating ground edit if i read schematic corectly, it is dc bias at 53V from the chasis ground, but it is driven from its own winding of flyback transformer in closed loop.

20us + 40us would be 16.67KHz. Is this just the error in your measurement? Is the rise and fall of the triangle 10us?

thanks for your help, as for the the scope measurment, it might not by accurate, my scope wasn't calibrated on a timebase since i got it , and it is about 30 years old. In my post on eevblog, the waveform is verticaly fliped i was measuring it with both scope and tv floating with no earth reference.

It's a good idea to learn to use a an analog meter and read an analog clock. I have not used an analog multi-meter I would say for at least 30 years.

Trust there is worse , there is backdoor sold Chinese Chinese copy , with half component removed , like continuity check , buzzer and LED , gone with the wind , thats my version labeled as TRN , but tis ok , im using it as ammeter/voltmeter for my DIY power supply , tough me more then anything , striped it down to the gauge and reused it as volt amp meter for my DIY power supply , something i couldn't do if it was original expensive version , dont have that much cash to destroy expensive stuff .
