Addo Elephant Park South Africa road trip, with reviews of Main Rest Camp and Nyathi Rest Camp. 3 days journey through the 3rd largest national park in South Africa. It's a very accessible park, maybe the most accessible one in the country, being only a few km from the major city of Port Elizabeth.
Although Addo Elephant National Park is a big 5 reserve, with lions, leopards, rhino, elephant and buffalo, it's really all about the elephants. The park was established in 1931, to create a refuge for the 11 last wild elephants in the area, that had been relentlessly hunted to the point of extinction. Today it's a huge success story, with 600 elephants, all descended from the original inhabitants. Although, bulls have been introduced over the years from the Kruger park in order to expand and improve the blood line.

I'll be sharing the adventure with videos, community updates and stories. And along the way I will be highlighting the plight of 3 of Africa's big cats: the Lion, Leopard & Cheetah.

Do you need an SUV for the roads to Nyathi Rest Camp? Do you think a small Honda Jazz would do the trip easily?
@ChrismCorbet

Hi Jane, you don't need a high ground clearance vehicle, or at least not when we visited. The road is good gravel, a Honda Jazz will cope just fine. Bear in mind that heavy rain could change the conditions so best to check with SANParks before you go.

Thanks Gary. I believe that there is a 4x4 trail in the park, the Bedrogfontein Trail, details on the SAN Parks website: www.sanparks.org/parks/addo/tourism/activities/4x4_trail.php
