In this episode, we tackle colorism within the Filipino community in our Rice Bowl Conversation series. Rooted in colonialism, Filipino culture has seen its fair share of skin whitening products, the lack of brown skin representation in Philippine media, and how it affects the Filipinx diaspora outside the Philippines.
We discuss how one another has grown up with their skin color in the United States as Filipinx-Americans, beauty standards, challenging colonial mentality, and how we can uplift the next Filipinx generation.
What experience did you have growing up? Tell us in the comments below.

So I'm like a light-medium brown. I think. Not that it matters. But when I was growing up, my grandma was always telling me not to go outside for too long because I might get "too dark." I have two cousins that are darker than me and all of my other cousins. They are just as Filipino as the rest of us, but they always would get the comments and "jokes" about being dark. Surprisingly, they laugh about it. But I think after years of hearing stuff like that it just became normalized for them and I feel like the only one who notices how wrong it is now. One of my other cousins is dating a black guy and my grandparents always make negative comments about him after he comes around to family parties. I had a Filipino friend that once gave me Likas as a gift. We were on the tennis team together in high school and she thought that I needed it after being in the sun day after day. It took me years to realize what happened there. It just makes me wonder: What is so wrong with being dark? Why is this so ingrained in our culture? Just colorism and internalized racism things~

@@xx4443 I do think it has to do with the chinese dynasty and the great prestige of being able to go to china in the pre colonial tikes. There was a book written by a chinese scribe who described a filipino from the past who went to china. It was such a daring and seen as a very prestigious thing that he was given tattoos without fighting and he was able to buy large tracts of land. All because he was able to go to china.

You four really represent what Filipinos are. Some would look more white, some more hispanic, some more asian and some more black. Unlike more homogenous Asian countries or racially segregated Anglo countries - Filos are more like latin america where you have all the mix in between.

Growing up Morena I always thought of whitening my skin because white is the beauty standard here in the Philippines. Esp on our entertainment industry, little do we see Lead Characters plyed by Morena or Full Filipino. It has always been played by mixed or white skinned. There’s this group here in the Philippines which is SB19 who made me love my color. Why do I have to whitewash myself to please others? Being morena is not an imperfection.

no it's not imperfection it is perfection. Your brown skin is a blessing white skin is not a blessing you can get skin cancer 100x easier with lighter complexion, they make you hate your skin because those who are pale are jealous...

I've always seen SOME folks of brown and moreno color as people from the Southern Islands and SOME people of light skin of the metro Manila area. Almost 400 years of colonialism really fucked us up. Our ancestors saw these people with lighter skin ruling over us and maybe thought if they have lighter skin they'd be accepted and their social status would be higher. That mindset is evident till now. Reminds me of Pepito Manaloto. The moment the family got all those money suddenly they have lighter skin.

11:49 is the one of the good reasons Filipinos don't racially discriminate. Yes, Many Filipinos look at the skin and use it to gauge a person, but I'm also certain that Filipinos also look at you as still a Filipino no matter how small a percentage it is and will make you feel as if you are part of their community.

Grew up with a parent who instilled that white is beautiful even tho he looks nothing white. That fucked me up. I was still in high school back then when I wanted to change the way I look. I resorted to nose clips to get a higher nose bridge. Keeps sweeping off due to my oily skin and resorted to clipping my nose with a paper binder clip. And up to this day I still cannot breathe well through my nose. And also, my stature back then is not something that would fit as a white person so I took calcium and vitamin d supplements which I took religiously. Last resort was lying to everyone at first that I was half white and my parents were from China and some European country, and the last was living in my own lie. I could not live the lie anymore. Got paranoid and was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Message to all the younger ones out there who are planning on becoming a parent. Be careful what you teach your child. Even if it's only your thoughts or opinions, it can be their life.

Filipinx refers to diaspora, particularly American diaspora. No one is forcing anyone else to use it. If you dont like it, don't use it. I personally don't use Filipinx either but I wouldn't begrudge or put someone else down for using it. As I see it, it's not going to gain traction on mainland and at its heart, I don't think diaspora are trying to force it on mainlanders. Mainlanders dictate how they choose to define themselves, just as diaspora can do also since they have very different experiences from mainlanders. This video is specifically produced and talks about Filipino-Americans and their own experiences. They choose to use Filipinx, let them. It's their way of merging American sociopolitical struggles with their own identity, which isn't a problem for mainlanders. Bottom line: we just need to allow the people who are at the heart of life experiences to guide their own journey and define themselves. It's not right for mainlanders to dictate how diaspora should define themselves, talk, or behave nor is it diaspora's right to dictate how mainlanders must define themselves, talk, or behave.
