This is not the 1972 ATCC race. In 1972, the ATCC was for cars such as the Allan Moffat's Boss 302 Mustang and Bob Janes' Camaro. This is the Adelaide round of the South Pacific Series, which was for Group E production cars. The South Pacific series a 4 race series, run in February, in line with the Tasman Cup series, which in 1972 was for F5000 open wheelers. The 1972 South Pacific series was won by John Goss.

I was at this race - feels like years ago - I then went to Bathurst with John Harvey and the Bob Jane Team - got a bird's eye view from the pit side - but it was a terrible day for the race - poured with rain most of the day................

Interesting how different the track change 10 years later. I started as a flaggy in 1982 and the place looked different to what it looked like in this clip.

The Big Boss 351 4V cleveland up against a Vauxhall / Torana with a holden 6 with 3 pommy carbs.. great racing and them chargers were loud as hell. That big falcon was every bit a Boss mustang with 4 doors and them LJ toranas were as fast as Aston martins of the day. Great Video and sounds like the voice of Cricket comentating.

In New Zealand the Charger dominated touring car racing. That model Valiant was totally Australian designed as was engine, the torana was an Opel, the falcon was more USA than apple pie and it's a pity Chrysler Australia didn't have the money to develop the concept further than they did.

Title is incorrect. This is a round of the South Pacific Touring Car Series that supported the Tasman Series, not an ATCC round.

True, but back then they had series like the "Improved Touring Car' series., which later turned into Sports Sedans. They were the V8 US style cars, Beecheys Monaro, Janes Camaro, Geoghans Mustang, Moffats Mustang etc etc. They are closer to V8 supercars than production cars. Todays V8 supercars are basically NASCAR, but with right turns, same chassis, same everything except body and engine. Even the Muscle car masters are nothing remotely similar to these old bombs. which = nostalgia.

strange stuff went on back then. looking at the launch at the start, the quickest cars off the show room are being beaten by the slowest car. the gtho and charger were low to mid 14 second cars and the torana a high 15. on the track the torana was modified into a 13 second car and got away with it. when it came to wheel changes the poorer teams would have a wheel brace and the richer teams would have air ratchets. then the poorer teams had to try catch up after their slow pit stops using older technology. hdt was funded under the table by holden which is now well documented. as well as brock getting special cranks and flywheels etc for Bathurst. it's all history now but it's annoying to watch the unfairness sometimes lol.

whether youre a rich or poor team , its still took the same amount of time to fill them with fuel , which took longer than changing wheels . air guns wernt made out of gold ....

Actually, the Torana was a Vauxhall, with an Aussie Holden engine in a stretched nose. But I get where you're coming from.

The Phase 3's had enormous grunt, tho on skinny series production tyres they would have been a handful. Little brakes as well. How sad it is that Australia lost their car industry, and the government of the day got away with it. Even more unfortunately the same mob remain in power...

And parity / handicap racing should never have been allowed. Cars should have to remain stock other than race tyres and safety features, even factory fuel tank volumes followed, " just safety tanks but the original volume" gearboxes the lot! That ensured manufacturers made huge efforts to make the fastest, safest , most reliable car possible , which translated to spectacular race wins and huge sales ! buy allowing teams/manufacturers to bridge handicaps it totally destroyed our once thriving car industry, that is the real ind killer right there! When FORD made the fastest 4 door sedan in the world and did it in style and sheer muscle they were heading for greatness and would of bought Holden along with them! I really think America was butt hurt about out GT HO's so much so that they set in motion to destroy our car market, just look at how many yanks got involved behind the scenes back then, and have a look now! I'm a ford man, I used to love mustangs and now could not give a rats ass about them, as it was always americas plan to screw us over and get there shit boxes up front! We were kicking ass a long time ago and it took our industry down to finally get the mustangs up front! Phheeww glad I got that off my chest but it's the truth and it's gone forever. Very sad.

@@Eric-kn4yn Go get some history lessons mate, the farking Liberal coalition set up the Australian economy on immigration under Howard, while selling almost every income generating asset the people owned and then claimed a surplus, all the while giving away the profit from the mining boom. It's easy to find out. If Labor just simply cut immigration now, the whole economy would come crashing down. People really should educate themselves on Australian politics. The single biggest lie in Aussie politics is the the "coalition are better money managers". At no time in the last 60 years has a coalition government ever handed Labour an economy in better condition than the one they inherited, NOT ONCE... It's all easily accessible in the treasury archives or the report the world bank and IMF did into the worlds leading economies.

I don't think the superiority of modern motor vehicles is in dispute here and I don't believe it's about peoples memories looked at through 'rose coloured' glasses. What it's about is peoples fond memories of there previously owned cars or attending a motor racing event that they enjoyed.People enjoyed the old series production races because of the variety and they could relate the cars on the track. V8's are the premier series today.Series production was in the past. That's their relationship.

Very late reply! But right you are! The change not only killed car racing at its finest , but destroyed all the good work a manufacturer put into making a great car that was superior to others, which then translated to sales and commercial success ! The bs parity scheme is nothing short of handicap racing and it killed Australian motor sport and worst of all it killed the Australian car manufacturing industry period! Governing bodies should only be allowed to oversee that the rules are adhered too! Not make the rules nor head any sporting industry! When is the world going to wake up and get rid of over reaching idiots that put themselves above the sport and the people .

@2175Wook Top speed was rated at 140 mph (225 kmh) Power was said to be 300 bhp (225 kw) by Ford although it was later found that this was downplayed by Ford Australia to avoid public backlash over such a high powered local car (back in the early 70's here in Oz people were still very conservative in their views of high powered local cars, many believed they encouraged hoon drivers). Also the GTHO was not an imported Supercar and it was affordable to locals. Weight was 3366.5 lbs (1527 kg).

And that was with the speed limiter on at 6150, they were capable of 7500 revs as we now know safely and the phase 3 race versions produced nearly 390 hp from factory!Moffat had the choice between the new 600 hp unit or the 302 mustang! He chose the mustang in 1972 over 600 hp phase 3 because chassis flex was a problem that troubled him,it is well documented and the HP I quoted has been 100% verified! 13.9 over the 1/4 mile with the lower ratio factory diff and 14.4 with the higher geared diff ! P.G beat Moffat in round 3 at Bathurst and the times set were 2.25sec incredible for that era. Damn quick car for it's time , still quick now for an off the line factory built 4door on skinny tyres.

Not a boring comment at all from glitches. Todays cars are way better than these old buckets :). V8 supercars is nothing to do with production racing, so has No relation whatsoever, with these cars. Unfortunately peoples memories for "Nostalgia" is thru rose coloured galsses. BTW, I was at this meeting. And I have owned many Chargers in the past, and still own a late 60s V8 muscle car. I can certainly make the comparison.
