Ah! like gold fall the leaves in the wind,
long years numberless as the wings of trees!
The years have passed like swift draughts
of the sweet mead in lofty halls beyond the West,
beneath the blue vaults of Varda
wherein the stars tremble in the song of her voice, holy and queenly.
Who now shall refill the cup for me?
For now the Kindler, Varda, the Queen of the Stars,
from Mount Everwhite has uplifted her hands like clouds,
and all paths are drowned deep in shadow;
and out of a grey country darkness lies on the foaming waves between us,
and mist covers the jewels of Calacirya for ever.
Now lost, lost to those from the East is Valimar!
Farewell! Maybe thou shalt find Valimar.
Maybe even thou shalt find it. Farewell!

This is easily the best adaptation of Namarië I have ever heard. Not only is the pronunciation, stress, and meter on point, but the lyricism and the feeling behind it seems to me very close to the tone and meaning of the poem. And I think that the solo guitar is also a great accompaniment and to me fits the elven mode far better than any orchestral or complicated choral arrangement ever could. One could think this is very nearly the true sound of Tolkien’s elven minstrels... Lovely.

ADele MaCAL-lister, would the Quenya speakers say :) (Or Edél Mecálistë would they maybe write, if they heard your name.) Beautiful, and the longing is also in the song. + intensity in the music, but loaded silences between phrases, stanzas suits so well. Makes the silence, nature to speak. - like Elves enjoy, listenng the nature. As do us Finns.

This song is so beautiful! Tolkien’s poems are so gorgeous, and your voice and music do them great justice :) I wanted to learn to sing your version of this, but I find that when I want to learn something in another language, I really need to see a literal, interlinear translation of it in front of me. So I’ve attempted a literal translation I’ll post below. Hope this is helpful for someone! Let me know if there are any mistakes (I used the Quenya dictionary from Ambar Eldaron to sort out the word order). Namárië! @@adelemcallister I know it has been several years, but... Stressing in Quenya is pretty easy. I wrote the rules below (they are the same as in Latin). The stressed syllables are captalized. I also separated the stressed syllble in each word from the other syllables. I know I haven't separated the syllables correctly in every example, but this does not interfere with anything here. --> *Words with one syllabe:* The stress, when it occurs, falls on the only syllable, of course. --> *Words with two syllables:* The stress always falls on the second to last syllable (LAN-tar, LA-ssi, YUL-dar, VA-nwa, FA-nyar, E-lye -- *w* and *y* are not vowels in Quenya; they are pronounced as in English "well", "you"). Diphtongs count as one vowel when it comes to determining where the stress falls. In Quenya, the diphtongs are: *ai* , *au* , *eu* , *iu* , *oi* , *ui* (CAI-ta, FAU-ya, LEU-ca, MIU-le, OI-o, LUI-ni). All these diphthongs are all decrescent, which means they begin stronger and end up weaker. Any other vowel combinations are not diphtongs in Quenya, being pronounced with the vowels in separated syllables. --> *Words with three or more syllables* _By default_ , the stress falls on the third to last syllable ( AL-da-ron, LUM-bule, VA-li-mar, OI-a-le, ú-NÓ-ti-me, LAU-re-lin, tel-PE-ri-on, LAU-ri-e, na-MÁ-ri-e -- note that, on the last three words, the combinations *io* and *ie* are not diphtongs, so they are pronounced with the vowels in separate syllables: *i-o* , *i-e* (tel-PE-ri-on, lau-ri-e, na-MÁ-ri-e). But the stress falls on the second to last syllable if this syllable has: (a) a vowel marked with an acute accent (a long vowel): á, é, í, ó , ú (Elen-TÁ-ri, ai-re-TÁ-ri, un-TÚ-pa, undu-LÁ-ve) (b) a vowel followed by two consonants (Tin-TA-lle, sin-da-nó-ri-E-llo, Me-LYA-nna, Ca-la-CI-ryo, hiru-VA-lye).

Learning a (Tolkienian) Elvish language is actually far easier tan learning a real foreign language. You can learn an Elvish language within a couple of weeks. Fluency is another matter, though. But there's no problem at all to learn any of the Elvish languages and not be fluent in it, because they are not actually spoken languages.

@@basse9914 I was actually talking about the grammar, only. Elvish grammar can indeed be learned within a couple of weeks, if you got the time and the will to do it (like when you're on vacation). You will obviously take more time to acquire a decent vocabulary. But this isn't really necessary, because Elvish is not actually spoken, just written, so you can always look up for words on a dictionary every time you need.

While I cannot comment on Quenya, I will say that the phonology in the song immediately put me in mind of Finnish (not just the rhoticity: there’s something very distinct about the vowel quality)…and that’s eminently appropriate, since Finnish was the inspiration for Quenya phonology. Did you listen to Finnish songs before recording this? At any rate, it is not only beautiful, but also apt enough to impress this non-Quenya-speaking neophyte.

It's great, though it should be a little different in toning. I've read the rules and they say: -All words consisting of two syllables are toned in the first. -Those with three or more syllables: a) are toned in the second syllable counting from the end if the vowel in this syllable has an accent (for example "Andúnë") or if there are two or more consonants before the last vowel (for example "Isildur") b) are toned in the third syllable counting from the end elsewhere (for example "Oiolossëo", "Namárië"). -The accent (like in "Andúnë" or "Namárië" or "súrinen") means that this vowel is long (this is why the third syllable counting from the end cannot be toned is there is an accent in the second). Anyway, I liked it so much.
