Falsettos, Eddie Kendricks of the Temptations, and Russel Tompkins Jr. of the Stylistics back in the day. No one's quite like Phillip Bailey.

Philip Bailey’s voice gives you chills every time. Their “Gratitude” live album came out in 1975 and I literally wore it out as a 10 year-old! They were the soundtrack to my childhood.

Their vocal blending is divine, such purity of sound. Agree about those notes, like ringing a bell and to hold it like that. The sparkly clothes, silver, gold etc were the thing then, quite normal 😂

By far my favorite band and Philip belongs in the conversation of falsetto singers, but he does have some great company in a few different genres.

Thanks Harri for shining a light on this incredible band. If this is 1975 then this is the tour that I saw them on in Sacramento, California. Not only were they incredible vocally and musically they were one of the first r&b bands to have a great stage show. The drummer went up in the air and spun around and the bassist flew through the air on some wires. It was almost as good as any Pink Floyd stage show. This song was a huge hit, at least in my neighborhood.

I've been an E.W.F. fan since the early 70s. Never knew about Devotion until I got the album. It blew me away. The song never got as much play as it should have.To me it's one of their best songs.

Performances from the Midnight Special are historic, and I'm so glad they were preserved for us all. Earth, Wind & Fire were in a class by themselves. "Devotion" was a minor hit from the year before (1974), the follow up release to "Mighty Mighty."

Love me some Earth Wind and Fire, a group that can sing live and those harmonies, can't get enough. Devotion was a hit, it wasn't this slow, definitely a faster clip, you should take a listen to the studio version. Thanks Harri❤️👍

The first Earth Wind and Fire album I bought was Gratitude. That album featured "Devotion" (live). I was old enough to know that Earth Wind and Fire made songs that I like. Still, I wasn't ready for what I had when I got home and played it. That whole double album is wonderful music. I know many say that "Reasons" is their favorite, but it's "Devotion" for me. Earth Wind and Fire's vocals are 'heavenly'. Ramsey Lewis had EW&F's vocals on his "Sun Goddess". Take a good look at that audience. The expressions on their faces look like they are in bliss, Harri.

There's another Phil that can compete with Philip Bailey. Phil Perry; not as well known, but worth listening to his vocal talent.
@RTDavis0503
@RTDavis0503 2 ай бұрын
Phil Perry sings mostly in mixed voice. He does falsetto on the super high notes but most of that stuff is chest and mixed voice coming from Phil Perry. YES. His natural range was that crazy. Philip Bailey sings mostly falsetto

Philip Bailey performed in my hometown Apeldoorn some 30 years ago. I don’t know how I figured out in which hotel he stayed, but I went to the hotel the next morning to get his autograph and he was sitting in the car when I arrived. I will tell you that this wasn’t the best hotel in town. Not bad, but IMO not worthy of a star like Philip Bailey.

The first concert I ever went to was Earth, Wind, and Fire in 1978. I was 12 and my older brother got stood up by his date, and instead of being bitter he took me. It was AMAZING. The production value was off the charts. They were lowered onto the stage in a freaking spaceship. But it was the unique music and those fantastic voices that made me a hardcore fan forever. Serpentine Fire will put me in a good mood no matter what.
