Here's a fun fact: Back in the mid '60s, to a lot of us, the contest for who was the #1 band from Britain was not a contest between the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, it was a contest between the Beatles and the Dave Clark 5. And with "Because," you discovered their most beautiful ballad. But they had some awesome rockin' hits, like "Any Way You Want It," "I Like It Like That," "Bits and Pieces," "Glad All Over," "Reelin' and Rockin'," and "Catch Us If You Can." Turns out they didn't have the staying power of the Beatles or the Stones, but for a few years there, they were among the hottest, most beloved rock and roll groups in the world.

Oh how we loved the "British Invasion"! We got so much great music because of it. Many of the bands were using the Beatles "formula" and that was okay by us! I loved the Dave Clark Five (and so many others)! What a great time it was to be alive!

The Dave Clark Five appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show more than any other band back in the day. I actually liked the DC5 more than the Beatles when they first came out. Partly, because they had a sax player. (I played sax in the Jr. Hi band) "Because" has always been my favorite slow dance song. Sadly, drummer Dave Clark and guitar player Lenny Davidson are the only ones left from this great band.

Aww, I have one of their CDs that I play on road trips...good group...competed with the Beatles as best they could, had several hits. Similar music like The Dave Clark Five includes artists and songs like Herman’s Hermits, Manfred Mann, The Searchers, The Hollies, The Grass Roots, The Troggs, The Association, and The Buckinghams...I would love for you to do the Grass Roots and the Buckinghams.

Dave created a documentary about that time period which is most informative and uplifting indeed, at least for one from other side of pond. You see, we had just lost Jack. JFK was ripped from even our young hearts in November of '63, and by January of '64, the Beatles, Dave Clark, Stones, Yardbirds, Kinks, and such broke down our gloomy door and filled our ears with jewels and our hearts with a healing megadose of exuberance. The Spirit of the '60s began for us at this point. What came before was backwash from the '50s. "Pour me beer" songs. "Poor me" beer songs. So thank you thank you for saving us! We owe you one.

DC5 - Really nice British Invasion Rock and Roll. This style fell into disfavor when Rock and Roll evolved into Rock. The Beatles ruled the former, and led the move to the latter; and ruled that also.

Beatles first appearance on Ed Sullivan: February 9, 1964. Dave Clark Five first appearance: March 8, 1964. Definitely the first wave of the British Invasion. The first record album I ever bought was The Dave Clark Five’s Greatest Hits. I LOVED their music.

I remember seeing them for the first time on the Ed Sullivan Show back in 1964. I was 10 yrs old. Just the other day, out of nowhere, I caught myself singing this song as I went about my daily household chores. Great choice, Harri! Because has long been my favourite DC5 song! Mike Smith's vocals and keyboards are top notch and the rhythm has a beautiful roll to it. Mike Smith is considered to have one of the finest voices of the British Invasion as he could sing gorgeous ballads like this as easily as he could sing raw Rock 'n' Roll. The generally unsung performer of the group was Dennis Payton, who played guitar, saxophone, and harmonica but often stays in the background of the tracks. A little behind the scenes information for you - Dave Clark rarely played on the band recordings. Instead, that usually fell to the amazing talent of session drummer Bobby Graham. Graham was instructed to keep his work as simple as possible so that Clark's limited abilities could copy it when the band played live. Despite Clark's name on the writing credits, he never wrote anything the band recorded. This song, as were most of the group's early hits, was written by a man named Ron Ryan. Ron and Clark had a handshake deal where Clark would put his name as songwriter and would then pay Ron the royalties earned from sales. Clark never paid a penny, keeping it all to himself. I've spoken with Ron on many occasions and his story has been corroborated by a few others. Ron has been fighting for decades to get the recognition he deserves. He has even taken the time to give me advice and suggestions for my own writing. Further, the band was paid a weekly stipend by Clark during their heyday. They were paid well, but the vast bulk of the income the DC5 received went straight into the pockets of Clark himself. While the band members were paid thousands, Clark made millions.

Thye DC5 were so popular they even did a feature film like the Beatles which included their hits! 1965's "Catch Us if You Can"! Released in the US as "Having a Wild Weekend"! It was OK but no "A Hard Days Night".

The DC5 was the third ranked English group behind the Beatles and the Stones. I think this was one of the best songs of the era.

I don't remember this one so checked release date: 1964. So, yes, a little early for my 5-year-old's radar... we had radio but no TV till that year. But I DO remember seeing them perform Glad All Over on TV , and that was also released 1964. Suggest that one for a future reaction, Harri, if you haven't already ....

Next to The Beatles, my favorite British Invasion Group. Not complicated, but wonderful tunes beautifully and originally produced. "Try Too Hard" might be their best song, but there are a ton of great ones. "Any Way You Want It" might have more unrelenting energy than any song in the history of rock music. Combination of sax as a rhythm instrument and organ/piano set them apart. Mike Smith was one of the best rock singers of all time, as well as a terrific keyboardist and composer. I'm friends with his widow. He should have had more solo fame than he did. Dave Clark was a great producer.

They were the second group after the Beatles to come to America on the Ed Sullivan show . I remember at the time loving the white tunics they wore , looked like a shirt a doctor would wear . They were quite popular for a few years . They were on Ed Sullivan more than any other band .

This song sounds more like The Beach Boys to me than The Beatles but it’s emblematic of early/mid 60’s pop. The DC5 were part of the early British Invasion and were a brief but serious rival to The Beatles with huge record sales at that time. Their music was usually very uptempo and hard driving.

I loved the DC5, and still do ... they did, as you say, have very clean recordings, but based on thousands of listenings I must agree with you that this is a cleaner release than the originals, though I do not think it has been autotuned ... Mike Smith, the singer, had a legendary voice and, DC's drumming notwithstanding, was clearly the identifying sound of the band ... they were inducted into the R'R Hall of Fame by Tom Hanks, of all people

These guys were trying so hard to be the Beatles! They gave it a great shot and had some wonderful songs, like this one, that hit the charts. I think they faded away as quickly as they appeared. Good stuff Harri 🌺✌️

This song really brings back memories. Their harmonies were as good, if not better, than the Bealtes in my opinion.

Lennon/McCartney could have written this song, it's so deliberately close to the Beatles style. It did well in the US, it reached number 3 on Billboard's hot 100. I was surprised to learn that when I first heard it in the 1990s, cos in their native UK they threw it away by making it the B side of "Can't You See That She's Mine" (which made #10 in the UK). Given how "of the moment" it was it's pretty amazing that they did not put it out as a UK A side! The post-fame story of the Dave Clark Five (DC5 in the USA) is pretty sad though. Unlike a lot of artists, Dave Clark retained or regained control of all their hits and would not license them for compilations OR reissue DC5 "best of" CDs for many years (I think just one compilation album came out between about 1975 and 2000?). Consequently the public were not constantly hearing their hits on oldies stations and on TV - a process which kept alive the fame and memory of almost all the other big bands of that era. Eventually in about 2007 Dave Clark did work on a remastered CD reissue of many of their hits - e.g. the stereo remix of this track that @HarriBest reacts to here. That did rekindle the flame, but a lot of his bandmates were justifiably bitter because their faded fame had made it far harder for them to get work in the intervening years.

Don't believe the record label that claims Because was written by Dave Clark. The only Clark ever wrote was his name on other peoples' work (and all the paychecks). The song was written by Ron Ryan who was the brother of the DC5's original guitarist Mick Ryan. As for their vocals, John Lennon, when asked about the DC5, claimed that he thought their harmonies were better than the Beatles. Mike Smith, their usual lead vocalist, was one of rocks best singers of all time.

It is a great song but unfortunately the Dave Clark Five in recordings was more tantamount to The Beach Boys because Dave Clark as producer had total control of the product which being what was played on the recordings. Dave did not play the drums on virtually no DC5 records and it’s questionable if anyone, besides Mike Smith sang lead, possibly backing vocals and keyboards on the recordings. Additionally Dave Clark is credited with either solo writing many songs or co-written with Mike smith. Sorry to say that Dave did not write any if these songs. Most if thier hits should be attributed To Ron RyAn and Mike smith

To me, this was the best of the British Invasion and they were my number 1 group. Never cared for the Beatles.

Hi Harri .. Yes this song had a pleasant sound and it's a good recording, but I think it's only an average tune .. IMHO they had many better songs than this one .. My 2 top favourites of theirs were "Any Way You Want It" ( which was covered very well by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers ) and "Catch Us If You Can" ..
