Yep! If I have an appointment the next day, I set alarms or notices for when I need to leave for the bus (with extra time allowed because I’m usually late), arrange everything I’ll need next to the door (or in my bag), put a note of what I need from the fridge (meals, snacks ) and … keep an $8 rain poncho in my backpack. And try to put things in the same place every time.

Lmao I hang my keys and fobs on my door so I literally CAN'T forget them on my way out and I set a reminder to check the weather the night before to see if I ALSO need to hang my umbrella there. Anywhere I need to sit down, I will hook my umbrella handle onto my bag which is one of the few things I DON'T ever forget because if I hook/lean it on a table/chair/wall I will DEFINITELY forget it. If I need to take out the trash on my way out, there have been dozens of occasions where I got to the lift, stepped into the lift and IMMEDIATELY stepped back out cursing to run back and grab it because the smell means I can't take it out in advance. Or got home and realised I forgot lol. Also, forgetting things or getting distracted on my way is why I always set alarms to go off every 5 mins in the hour before I need to leave the house so I know how much time I have left, and I mark my set out time on my calendar calculating Google Maps walking time x2 for my slow walking speed and distractions, then add a 30 mins cushion. It means I often end up early to things but it's much better than the alternative. (I may have been vaguely traumatised by an occasion in high school where on a lunch break I got hyperfocused on a book, didn't hear the bell or everyone around me leaving, got there 20 minutes into class and subsequently got scolded and humiliated in front of 40 people who I already knew looked down on me...)

Accurate! I did something similar to this, but I was distracted with just going for a walk to get some fresh air, and locked myself out of my old apartment...TWICE! Now whenever I leave the house, I always remember Adam Sandler's standup skit "Phone Wallet Keys" song so I never forget them again

Once I was sitting in the living room, watching the television show. I got up, went down the hallway past the bathroom, past my room into my bedroom ending up in my room. When I got there, I had no idea why I got up why I walked down the hallway or why I ended up in my bedroom. So I went back to living room and sat down to watch TV again . This happened four times before I realized why I got up in the first place.

I use the late Dave Allen method, and make the sign of the cross when I leave the house, which refers to Spectacles, Testicles, Wallet and Watch (or mobile phone as an update to technology). Although, I might look rather silly adding other movements for, house keys, car keys, lunch/shopping bag...oh and the reason for going out in the first place! Then outside the door, there is checking I locked it, walk away, walk back...check. Walk further, and then be worried for the rest of the time away whether I did in fact lock the door, which is then even worse if I use my car! Lol!

This is why it’s good to have a system/setup by the door, and solid habits to prevent this from happening. It took me years to develop this, but once in the door, keys and anything else in pants pockets goes on the shelf by the door, and things in my coat stay in my coat, I just hang it up by the door (for the most part the only exception to the keys thing is if I’m doing something that keeps me close by like taking out the garbage). I solve the umbrella situation by never using any of the 3 I own (probably because I’m from Seattle and if I actually used one I’d look like an out of towner 😅) The phone one, I usually just put in my AirPods and keep doing whatever I was doing or go for a walk if I would be disturbing someone nearby with my talking.
