June 30, 2016 by BOB BOILEN • At first, I was drawn in by Adia Victoria's languid guitar sound: In her hands, it practically has a drawl of its own. Then I heard her stories - never trite, often personal, always potent - which you can hear in the words that open her Tiny Desk concert. "I don't know nothing 'bout Southern belles," she sings in "Stuck In The South," adding, "but I can tell you something 'bout Southern hell."
Adia Victoria's voice is powerful and direct, with no artifice; it carries the singular perspective of a Southern black woman with a Seventh Day Adventist upbringing, who never felt like she'd fit in. She recently put out her first album, Beyond The Bloodhounds, and two of the songs here ("Stuck In The South" and "And Then You Die") are from that record. It's a brilliant debut, though I highly recommend seeing her perform live for the full experience.
Beyond The Bloodhounds is available now:
iTunes: itunes.apple.com/us/album/bey...
Amazon: www.amazon.com/Beyond-Bloodho...
Set List:
"Stuck In The South"
"And Then You Die"
"Heathen"
Credits:
Producers: Bob Boilen, Niki Walker; Audio Engineer: Josh Rogosin; Videographers: Niki Walker, Maia Stern, CJ Riculan; Production Assistant: Marissa Lorusso ; Photo: Kara Frame/NPR.

Her voice is based of the struggle of the black woman in the south. It aint supposed to be pretty. I actually went to church with her and have known her since she was 6 years old. She can sing very well. She sung in our church choir. Maybe its her message that is abrasive to many.

I saw her in Milwaukee in June. I think she has the blues of Billie Holiday and the angst of a young Alannis Morrisette. This is a great combination.I'd love to see her do more jamming on guitar. She's quite good, actually.

I really like this! She has one of those voices, I could just sit and listen to her talk if I could. I see a few people in the comments don't like her guitar; I on the other hand find it warm and comforting. Off to listen to the album on Spotify; thanks to NPR for introducing me to this artist.

Jesus wept. It's very easy to criticise... I bet half these people commenting aren't good enough to get a gig on here, and if they were, they would have enough class about them to show some encouragement. You know you're doing something right when people like this start piping up. Keep going, sounds wicked to me, and you're only just getting started! All the the best for the long unrelenting future! Check out Julia Stone for a very similar folk voice. Julia's white, but I also saw an African American folk singer last year who's songs, and acoustic guitar reminded me a lot of Adia's. Her voice was a little harsher, and unfortunately I don't remember her name. Granted Aida is the only folk singer I know wt a baby voice, singing about such hard topics. It shouldn't work, but she sounds outstanding!

I didn't realize Adia Victoria was lauded in 2015 by the arbiters of indie rock cred over at Rolling Stone Magazine, alongside other bands that are now taking the world by storm like Marmozet, Yellow Claw and Aquilo. Of course Rolling Stone's stupid listicles don't mean shit. But Ii's great if you like her - I was sincere when I said props to people who are able to see something likeable in this music.
