I had a 1995 RF900 that I wiped out on in 2000. Not a bad accident, but because all that plastic is so expensive, the insurance company totalled it. I was contemplating buying it back from the insurance company and fixing it up, but my friends told me not to since I would then have a bike with a salvaged title. Wish I didn't listen to them. Since then, I had a few other bikes, but always loved my RF900 the most. Me reminiscing about that bike is what brought me to this video...

6ª Reason: the DESIGN! The RF is absolutely beautiful; the only negative point is the lack of a fuel gauge and I agree with you about the suspension, the first gen. it's to soft.

i bought one of these brand new for about $9500 NZ dollars, bloody cheap. It was so much fun and solid as , cranked it to just on 170mph along a nice bit of straight country road and just wicked fun.Great round the tight and twisties and decent for a long ride. had plenty of other bikes but this was definitely my favorite and so easy to ride.

ALTERNATORS - the early bikes have a bomb proof alternator. In their wisdom, Suzuki moved on to a rubber/plastic coupling for the spindle/shaft (the drive part of the alternator) on later models; it's thought this was a safety idea - as the Alt sits just above the gearbox. This later style linkage/Alt is thought to last c. 35,000 miles - at which point the grip between the shaft and this rubber/plastic ring can 'let go' meaning an other wise sound Alt doesn't spin, and therefore doesn't create electricity ...... Sounds like a PITA -------- BUT it is possible to marry the body of a later Alt, with the linkage/front section from the earlier style Alt --- this is well covered on the forum; it's a valuable tip, and means of getting around the bike's ONE problem.

There's a green one for sale in the SF bay area California. I almost bought it a year ago for a bargain since the carbs needed cleaned etc. Someone else bought it and now I see it for sale for 3 times what he paid. A few days after it sold I found myself a 1991 zx11 in almost mint condition for $1 per cc. The rf900 would have been nice, but Im kinda glad now that the deal fell through.

The Manta Ray was made for some type of Suzuki anniversary here in Australia (hence green & gold). I have heard figures of between 75 & 90 being produced. They are numbered on the fuel cap. I own #4. Great bike except for vibration through bars at highway speeds that can make your hands numb! Cheers.
@uhtred7860
@uhtred7860 Жыл бұрын
Ive heard of vibration problems on RF900s before, we had one come into the shop i worked at here in NZ, and the older guy who owned it loved it but said it had a vibration thru the pegs. Took it for a ride and sure enough, bang on 110kph the pegs tingled so much it would have put your feet to sleep after a while. We ended up going through the bike looking for loose mounts or something, found nothing. About a year later a different RF900 came in for a service and the owner asked if we could find out why the bars vibrated, again we tried and everything was sweet. Weird thing is, not every RF does it. Kiwi Rider magazine had on as a long term test bike in the 90s and theirs had bar vibration too, so 🤷‍♂

Thnx Mate! You really convinced me with this vid. Just recently sold my 2004 Honda CBF 600Sa. In the spring I want to buy a more cheaper bike. I always loved the looks of the RF. After watching this vid I really want one! I really want a 900, but also consider a 600. Anything to say between the differences? Thumbs up for this vid!
@Adikxx
@Adikxx 7 жыл бұрын
Hi bud ! Both are sweet bikes, 900 is more frugal on fuel(and has bigger tank), has more torque at the bottom and midrange for obvious reasons, shorter production run and endurance speed record make it also a bit more desirable. On the flip side 600 is cheap as peanuts to buy, has better - healthier for shoulder joints (side mounted) passenger grips and to many people looks actually a bit slicker. 600 has also got 6 speed box (which sadly 900 lacks) If you like lots of revs then 600 is the way to go, if you like somewhat flexible mill which can stay in forth gear in town all day long 900 should be your pick.

i have my third RF900 now, first one i didnt keep long, vibrated bad and caused numbness in the hands, 55K on clock, second one was fantastic, 25K on the clock, had been dynojetted and performance ignition coils, that got stolen 3 weeks after buying, current one bought as a project for £250, just needed fork seals and general going over, havent ridden it yet but also vibrates alot too, 65k on the clock. if i keep this one then will look into dyno jetting and ignition coils like the last one had, it was so much smoother, throttle response was amazing and just a very nice ride.
@uhtred7860
@uhtred7860 Жыл бұрын
We had a couple of RF900s come through the workshop here in NZ with the owners complaining of annoying vibration, and they did, a test ride showed that. Could never solve the issue, Balanced the carbs, re-torqued the engine mounts and other bolts, fitted new grips & bar weights. Also, not every RF was affected, it was just one of those weird things. It was probably pistons and/or conrods manufacturing tolerances being to far out, blue printing the engine might have fixed it, but no one wanted to fork out for that.😆

Hello. Nice vid!!! I just found one for sale. It has gone about 43.000 km. Is that too much for it? Is there anything in peticular that should have been replaced? Cheers Emil from Denmark
@Adikxx
@Adikxx 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Emil. If the one u found really has 43.000 km it should run sweet as a cherry provided it's been looked after. Mine has about 55.000 km and runs beautiful. They say that second gear can be an issue for those but i had 2 RF900's with some miles on and never had a problem like that so i guess if the bike wasn't molested it will run long and strong. It was thrashed then it will become a headache(no surprise here).Later models may suffer from alternator's coupling failures(early modes have shaft driven design so better deal here). In contrast later models have adjustable forks 94 model HAS NOT but you can go around that by changing front springs to HYPERPRO progressive ones and filling the forks with their specifically designed oil for that job. I did it recently myself and i can tell the difference. Just make sure paint is original, no rust, no accident past and no dodgy knocking,leaking or smoking from the engine. Follow basic protocol for buying a used motorcycle. My little advice would be to pay more for a really good onerather than saving a few coins then you'll have a great ownership experience. Would be good if there was some evident of HP also. Some of those were castrated to 98 HP. Great news is that parts are peanuts cheap for it and lots of stuff you could do personally so as long the engine is healthy this bike is a bomb! Hope this helps Reards!

@@Adikxx My only worry is being too far forward with a herniated disc and a pinned and plated shoulder. But this looks as if it is okay for that. I'm used to a CBF1000. Could also do with the seat height being higher than the 805mm it is listed at. I'm nearly 6 foot and had an FJR that gave me hell so I sold it last week. This RF is the exact same seat height.

RFs are certainly rare but I don't think it'll ever be worth anything, same for the 600 and 900. I love them but I don't think they'll be collectible in a return-of-investment sense.

Are you shure you want it as first bike? Bought one last month and spent 2000 kilometers atm on it. Its a very good bike handlingwise and the motor pulls like a truck. From the bottom of rpm it has always enough power. I had it on 240 km/h 3 weeks ago and i am pretty shure it could go way faster. Otherwise combined with a touring windshield it takes too much pressure from the body so that i am always way faster as it feels. The foodbegs are a bit high and combined with the wide tank it was a bit painfull to ride for my hips but its worth every second to ride. Absolute lovely bike.

Hi bud,firstly thanks for the comment and your link! Yes! Mine does exactly same thing,this is my second RF900 and the one i had before also used to do that.Both bikes I rode used to also bang quite loudly when going from 2nd to 3d on higher revs.My bike has always been beautifully well looked after and never hard ridden,i ride on high quality fully synthetic oil and it still does it so i don't think we have anything to worry about(its rather unlikely that gearbox is smashed).I had a 99 GSX600F in the past(low mileage bike) and it also did that. Seems to me it's one of those Suzuki's quirks,remember those were built on the budget to compete with the blade so we can't expect same sort of refinement.Another symptom they develop over time is tapping sound from the engine,it basically lets you know it needs maintenance.Here you have a link to the video where you can here the strange sound and explanation of a remedy for that issue. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a5Oqg5OFts65pmQ.html

the rf engines nothing like the gsxr1100 engine.. head port angles are closer to the gsxr750 srad & the block & head castings are totally different.. visit you local wrecker & compare 👎

@Adikxx Жыл бұрын
You have no clue. RF900 engine has LOTS of components shared with GSXR 1100W. Whole gearbox is literally identical, crankcases are the same, alternators, starter motors, water pumps, oil pumps are all identical in both motors! Even head bolts are the same and all torque settings for every single bolt in the engine are the same in both bikes. 94 model of RF900 has the entire clutch basket with it's internals identical as GSXR 1100W. That's A LOT OF PARTS ! Differences are: the head, barrels and rotating assembly. I other words pretty much half of the engine is identical in both bikes. I built 3 engines for that bike so dumb suggestion of local wreckers is not needed, thanks👎👎👎👎👎

@@Errol.C-nz castings? What castings? What are you talking about? I told you what exact parts are the same and it's literally about half of the engine including CRANKCASES! That's what i meant in the video by saying "RF900 engine is derived from GSXR 1100W". It's enough to cover GSXR 1100W engine with RF900 cylinder head and it drops in RF's frame fitting like a glove..🤦‍♂️ GSXR 750 shares way less parts with RF, for example the transmission and entire clutch is different therefore the most relared engine to the one ftom RF900 is GSXR 1100W. Period.

@@Errol.C-nz Yes because the head needs to be changed! I already told you this twice!!! Do you even read what i type to you? I have a GSXR 1100W engine in my RF bro, i just used RF's head with small mods and it fits like a glove !!! I have the whole process of building and fitting of that engine documented on THIS CHANNEL! GSXR 1100W motor with RF's head in RF's frame !!! Once RF's head is on the engine is identical from outside and without looking at the rear side of the barrels where it says 1076ccm it's unrecogniseable and looks like RF's motor from head to toe. Conversation with you is a joke, first you give me thumbs down for telling the truth about RF's engine being derived from GSXR 1100W then you switch to talking about fitting GSXR motor in RF trying to help yourself but you only made it worse for yourself. Sorry for saying this but you literally have no clue..
