Yeah it's a shame that economies of scale that are already in place keep good ideas like these from getting a decent start or when they do get started they still get shut down because they can't compete price wise with things like plastic that already have the advantage of economies of scale and the loyalty of big business.

Here in Belgium (Europe), and in every other neighbouring country that i've been in, 6 packs are just bottles or cans in a cardboard box, or shrinkwrapped plastic. I've never seen the ring type packaging in my life, and i can easily carry them without any problems, also in one hand.

@allosaaldrich
@allosaaldrich 3 жыл бұрын
Actually, you misinterpreted it. The narrator said that all these leaves are being wasted but now letting them rot or burn isn’t the only option anymore. Also isn’t producing a leather that is not biodegradable bad? It should be biodegradable so it can be broken down if disposed of...

The more/bigger the better mentality.
@Shahrezad1
@Shahrezad1 3 жыл бұрын
Possibly because of a culture of traveling and convenience ("time is money" and cleaning real silverware takes time), in which you bring disposable cutlery with you so that you don't have to carry your dirty dishes with you. Similarly, any party is usually paired with disposable plates, cups, forks, etc (usually themed, if it's for kids). If you have a conference, the cutlery there is disposable. If you go to a Convention it's the same. If you are eating on the go (which is Americans often are) because you haven't set aside time to eat at home...same problem. Public schools and businesses also use disposable cutlery. So if you have a luncheon provided by the company, that's what they have. Bring a treat to school? Same thing. It's pretty pervasive, culturally, and seen as completely normal. Unfortunately. :S

I personally use disposable cutlery in parties because it takes too long to wash because there are lots of people. However, some people who attend throw the spoons everywhere so we have to clean and find them however some spoons will remain unfound. These spoons are made because of people's laziness...

People don't need jobs, people need income. A machine that does the work that has previously been done by 100 people, makes a larger profit on that work than the 100 people initially did. There is no reason why these 100 workers should starve and the owner of the factory pocket all the profits. He could not have invented the machine without workes. He could not have built it and he could not have afforded it.. but yet, he gets to pocket all the profits.

People don't need jobs, just income. OK. Please show us a job where hundreds get paid to go out to sea and pick plastic. We need to stop the production of single use plastics, I’m sick of everyone blaming the consumer, when your bath is overflowing you turn off the tap, you stop it at the source, if the average person doesn’t have an alternative offered in supermarkets how are we supposed to do the shopping without buying plastic? It’s simple the factories produce way too much of this stuff, we can’t be the only ones who have to change (consumers) the factories need to

The consumer is indeed the issue. The problem is, that we need to come together as q unit and stop buying single use plastics. Drink tap water, stop buying Coke/Pepsi/Bottled water, stop eating fast food and consider switching to plant based diet or lab made meat. If you want to cut something by its root, reduce demand as a consumer yourself and try convince friends/family to do the same.

They really shouldn't market PLA as biodegradable...
@scottanderson691
@scottanderson691 3 жыл бұрын
Well the fact is they're right, it is. But I agree with you because the problem is that the conditions necessary to get PLA to biodegrade are very difficult to create and should more realistically be described as compostable. And even then, the conditions required to compost PLA aren't something your average person can set up easily.

I am against banning plastics and the like at least for now as they exist for a reason, cheap and available, but these alternatives are very interesting and many of them deserve a real attempt at implementation. Edible cutlery (I like the meal themed favors, very smart), Fish Edible Can holders, bio-plastics (for some applications), etc... if enough of them hit market capacity, it might be enough to reduce or even eliminate the dependency on trivial use of plastics.
