I went down this path when I was going to be thicknessing slabs for guitar bodies. This is a REALLY good approach, easily scaleable. One warning though: make sure the planer bit you buy for milling is designed for the application, specifically RPM. 15 years ago there was a bit with 3 individual replaceable blades that was designed for drill press RPM ranges (discontinued now). There were a number of cases in the DIY luthier community of people using it with their 1/2" routers and the bit would fly apart under high RPM and cause injury. If in doubt, go for a smaller diameter bit designed for purpose and use more passes. Love what you did here brother, excellent build.

WOW! Outstanding call out! This closed system seems like would offer some protection from the catastrophic failure of a bit. I am wondering if some good leathers, for welding, will help as safety gear I use for this type of wood working. I will pay attention to the RPMs to avoid wrecking my day. Thanks again.
@rauladame2105

This warning got me thinking I don't remember the rpm of my tools. I am going through my manuals to revisit rpm of my tools to prevent a "day wrecking" event. Awesome call out 👍

Always check the rpm for a bit. The larger the bit the more danger there is.

Broken bits can happen any time. Heavy PVC (e.g. curtain side truck body material) can be used over the job each side of the sled. These will catch flying debris and will reduce dust. You could also cover the gaps between the sled rails, but it's going to be a pain to use. In any case, the narrow gap is unlikely to let high speed shrapnel exit the table.

Great build as always. Make sure to get a Planing Router Bit for this and don't use a dado bit. While the dado will work, it leaves a pretty rough surface. Plus a decent planer bit will take off a wider swath of wood. Other tip, as I do a LOT of this, plane one side until you cannot see any more non-planed areas then flip the piece over. At this point, hot glue is good for holding down the piece and getting rid of those bulky (but nice) clamps. To remove the hot glue, spritz it with 90% rubbing alcohol and it will come right off. Thanks again for the great build!

I picked up the Portable Drill Guide from Rockler. I saw this post, did some research by checking out reviews of drill guides and decided on Rockler's. I started using it on my current project, instead of free hand drilling and when I was done, I was happy with the results. The PDG is expensive but the benefit in the higher level of quality of my projects will improve and pay for itself. I appreciate this this post.

Great project idea. I’ve been thinking the same thing for my routers and looking at a lot of videos and ready made products that cost a arm and a leg etc over the last few weeks. After watching your video I got the idea in your track system is to use instead superstrut bar - A channel that is 1 5/8 of a inch for everything that you used square tubing instead. You can bolt everything together and no welding or brackets with self tapping screws. They have numerous brackets in just about any angle you desire. They use 3/8 or 1/2 bolts and slotted nuts for bolting stuff together. I’ve already made 2 overhead trolley systems for chain hoists in my workshop areas at home. Turn it sideways and get some sealed bearings and I use special Allen Head machine bolts to go through the bearings as the rollers for the trolley, works great. Then to take up the slack between the trolley and the superstrut bar I use steel spacer tube material cut to length. My trolleys glide so effortlessly it’s insane. You can get superstrut bar at Home Depot but to get all the neat bracelets you have to go to a industrial contractors supply like Acme contractors supply that’s on the west coast. On the east coast you guys are going to have to hunt down industrial supply companies. And if you want something to glue together real fast is use SP-10 glue but it is mucho expensive but has a tensile strength of 4,000psi holding strength. Also if you made your sliding bridge wide enough that you can make another trolley to accommodate a power hand planner and a belt sander.
