This one shows how to adjust the heat anticipator on mechanical thermostats without the use of an ammeter to check control power.

I found your videos when looking for a reason why my suburban RV heater. The problem I was having was the heater would not come on at all. No fan, flame, or attempt at ignition. I took the cover off of my thermostat and I adjusted the small dial and it worked. I don’t know why that made it come on but the unit is only two years old and I think I will have to replace the whole thermostat. Now I find myself watching more of your videos, thanks for all the info.

There was probably a bad connection in the anticipator dial. Replacement if probably best. GFM

When I was cutting my teeth on furnaces I ran into some old camstat thermostats that were extremely picky, so I had to learn. There were also some Trane commercials that had such a low draw thru the electronics that we had to add a relay in parallel to draw enough for a mechanical to work. About the .8, hey if it works, who cares? Thanks GFM

Hi GFM, I've come back to your videos several times over the past few years. We have a new millivolt thermostat (Honeywell CT33) connected to a new propane gravity floor furnace. It works fine during the day, when we're moving around, but at night the furnace stops kicking on, and the place gets very cold (it's a little mountain cabin). Even during the day sometimes, the heat won't kick on, but as soon as I walk up to the thermostat, or sometimes touch it lightly, it will start. Our thermostat doesn't have an anticipator, I don't think, just a brass-looking screw near the top of the bimetal coil that looks to be some sort of connection adjustment. Anyway, have you encountered anything like this, and if so do you have any ideas? Thank you.

I have a Coleman deluxe blend air 2 . I just replaced the thermostat with a Honeywell home ct31A1003 . It came factory set to .4 but my question is. is that the correct setting for that furnace .And basically you can just play with this thing to adjust it to your home space & size. basically pinpointing how long you wanted to run before it turns off or turns on???? Finding that sweet spot of heat and when to turn off before too cold ? So instead of shutting of exactly on 73 degrees it gives a minute more before shutting off
@grayfurnaceman
@grayfurnaceman 7 ай бұрын
Your goal is to have your furnace run for 5 to 10 minutes to maintain temperature in the structure. Of course, lower outdoor temps will mean longer cycles. You should not be able to feel a difference in structure temp as the furnace cycles. GFM

What bout cooling, does it work the same ? --- anticipator... I'm having trouble keeping the air running after 7pm. It won't start up again till maybe 7am . It's a old rectangle Honeywell heat pump therm. Fan works all the time (brand new), is that right ?
@grayfurnaceman
@grayfurnaceman 10 жыл бұрын
The anticipator for cooling is of a fixed size, because it is energized in the off cycle of cooling. So I don't think this is your problem. If the fan is running all the time and the fan switch is set to auto, the unit could be freezing up and not thawing until the morning. Hope this helps. GFM

I just had a new fan motor put in, I turn the unit off & I can switch the auto on - it works, then off - goes off. Then turn unit back on & the fan motor comes back on. Could it be wired wrong ? It has gone off but only twice that I know of. It works all the time. I'm in Phx. Az. so stuff heats up pretty quick. THX

My apartment is getting too chilly before the heat kicks in. Where do I set the anticipator please. Do I want more cycles per or or less? Can you just spell it out for me. Thanks so much.
@grayfurnaceman
@grayfurnaceman 4 жыл бұрын
You want more cycles. Without the anticipator, there will be a lag where the temp must drop about 2F before the thermostat can sense the change. Then it will overshoot 2F before the thermostat senses the rise. The anticipator "anticipates" the drop in temp and turns the system on a little early. Then it shuts off a little early "anticipating" the rise in temp. Hope this helps. GFM

I wonder if you can help me, our living room thermostat wasn't turning on at 20 degrees like it normally does this week, we had to turn the the thermostat to 23-24 for the heat to come on, so we had a new thermostat installed and we still have the same problem with the new thermostat, this morning it was registered 20 but it wasn't that at all, I had left it on 15 over night, would you know what the problem might be? In the instruction's it talks about anticipator setting but there wasn't a anticipator on the old Honeywell CT 43 A thermostat, it's the old style that you adjust yourself, we have baseboard heating! the new thermostat does have a anticipator, but very unsure how to adjust it, I have phoned White Rodgers and they said to leave it on 4 which was the default setting, many thanks for any help.
