For those confused as to why the just walked towards their opponents trenches instead of running.... This is how it really happened in those times, because if you ran the entire hundreds of meters of no man's land, by the time you reach your opponent you would not anymore stamina to fight anymore... Ideally speaking, you would do this in waves and artillery bombardment(the dust kicked up by explosions or use of smoke shells would cover the advancing infantry), where the first wave would charge and gain ground in no man's land and provide cover fire for the next wave, which would in turn advance beyond the first wave's positions and cover the advance of the next wave.... And they would keep on doing this until they reach the opposite trench.

No Mans Land was historically not very large distances. With the use of the machine gun sometimes No Mans Land was only just a couple dozen meters. The distance needed to cross realistically was VERY runnable if you think about. This I'd say is a left over from colonial days/wars. During flintlock and muskets. This was actually why NO MANS LAND ended up happening so often as military tactics at the time were to meet up somewhere in the middle and duke it out in a line. Sooo they did that except with upgraded firearms. It wasn't until WW2 they realize "This is stupid. We should stop doing this.". REALISTICALLY as well as FICTIONALLY this tactic is very stupid ESPECIALLY given the fact that you're literally in the open and right there. No one would have waited for a women to have been shot and than charged. It was either CHARGE or none at all. The whole bombardment and advance WAS used but it was tactically very bad and not used very often. Communications were very poor compared to todays standards so to bombard on your own troops OR useless bombardment hoping they advanced far enough was always bad. This is just bad screen writing. Plain and simple.

The British slowly walked towards the enemy machine guns due to the creeping barrage tactic. It failed at the Somme, mainly due to timing and communication issues but it was much more successful later in the war. If the men outpaced the barrage, they'd be hit by their own shells. Likewise if the barrage advanced too quickly (as it did at the Somme), the men would be left exposed to fire.

Our troops fight on a squad or platoon level these days. To have a musician close enough that everyone could hear it over the sounds of battle you'd have to have like a third of your men as them and that's a waste of man power.
@GregoryTheGr8ster6 жыл бұрын
Yog Sothoth -- then we have 2 choices: 1) give every soldier today an iPod that comes preinstalled with marching music, or 2) bring back frontal assaults. I like the 2nd choice most. How are troops supposed to feel like they are part of a magnificent army when they are organized into tiny units? There is a scene in the movie Patton in which Gen. Patton watches a parade of Moroccan (or Algerian?) troops. He is so envious of how colorful their uniforms are and how good their army looks. Soldiers should be given beautiful uniforms and should march to energizing army music. That is how to make soldiers feel proud.
@yogsothoth75946 жыл бұрын
Yeah no. Having everyone wearing ear buds is terrible for your situational awareness which is pretty bloody important on a battle field. And you know you kinda need to hear orders and information which is hard enough when bullets are flying round your ears so making that harder isn't a good idea. Then operating with your troops making mass advances on a company scale is why things like the somme happened. You get a few MGs or mortars in the wrong place and you've fucked everyone. And sure having a marching band in your return of leaving parade is pretty good but its no longer practical on the battlefield. Anyway half the reason why we had musicians was to relay orders and we have radios now.

If they immediately started running, they would've gotten tired and slowed down near the end. The bayonet charge tactic is usually supposed to scare the enemy into running away (which it did), so they needed to save their energy for when they were closer to the Red lines and could fully close the distance in a charge.

I find this scene really interesting. Excluding politics for a moment, and zooming in on the individual soldiers/commanders, this scene really doesn’t have a bad guy. The reds are the enemy obviously, the antagonist, and they do shoot a medic/nurse, but clearly not out of malice/intent. They are defending their positions. The commanders aren’t these unfeeling monsters sending their men to die. The Junior commander clearly does not want to go out there, but he has his orders and he leads them from the front, at least not condemning them to a fate he won’t endure himself. The senior commander is clearly in a rough spot. He doesn’t want to condemn his men to die but what right does he have to condemn the rest of the Whites, who are relying on him to a similar fate. The scene shows I think, what is the reality of war. A mix of mostly good-average people killing each other for their own internally justifiable aims. It makes it even sadder than if there was a clear bad vs good.

"Свой среди чужих, чужой среди своих" is a great Western set during the Russian Civil War but not sure you can find it with English subtitles, "Белое солнце пустыни" is another awesome Western-style movie set during this period, pretty sure you can find it with subtitles. Doctor Zhivago is of course an epic. "Тихий Дон" (And Quiet Flows the Don), based on the epic novel of the same name that has been made into a movie (and a TV mini-series) - I like the 2005 version personally if you can find it. For a bit of a more humorous and adventurous movie I also greatly recommend "Неуловимые Мстители", but it's more for children and teens but still has some pretty great jokes and action. I'll try to think of others later.

Hard to believe that they actually employed suicidal tactics like this. Disperse! Flank! Get low! Run! Dont bunch up and walk in a slow, neat group towards the machine gun. You couldn't conceive a worse approach if you tried.
@AcZe11886 жыл бұрын
Alexander Millar tactics aren't that flexible yet during world war 1. Their definition of flanking is not applied in a tactical scale but rather in a operational or strategic scale
@alexandermillar12026 жыл бұрын
Yeah, maybe. The problem must've been organisational; an arrogant officer class who thought they knew best how to preserve the soldiers they had and take victory. If they took 30 seconds on the ground to assess the actual situation, they'd know instantly that rigid, disciplined lines wouldnt work. But idk. Maybe they couldnt trust their soldiers very much with initiative. Leave them in small parties with broad direction and they'd probably not coordinate effectively or even desert/surrender.
@stefanradev70346 жыл бұрын
Alexander Millar It happened a few times during the RCW (Russian civil war), because of the atrocious state of weapon and munition supplies. In this case ours (Whites) have a dozen bullets left. The others (Reds) are not much better- they have a machinegun, but are fewer in numbers. So the charge is a desperate, but not illogical decision. p. s. A couple of years earlier similar type of charges managed to take the first line of the defender's positions. The problem was the 2nd,3rd, etc lines and the reinforcements which came to counterattack. Here there is no 2nd line for Reds to fall back and no one other unit coming to support them.
@alexandermillar12026 жыл бұрын
