Neither party is perfect, but Republicans in Congress have been drifting towards political extremism since long before Trump, and they’re making it impossible for Congress to work the way it’s supposed to.
Subscribe to our channel! goo.gl/0bsAjO
Over the past few decades, both Democrats and Republicans in Congress have moved away from the center. But the Republican Party has moved towards the extreme much more quickly -- a trend that political scientists’ call “asymmetrical polarization.”
That asymmetry poses a major obstacle in American politics. As Republicans have become more ideological, they’ve also become less willing to work with Democrats: filibustering Democratic legislation, refusing to consider Democratic appointees, and even shutting down the government in order to force Democrats to give in to their demands.
Democrats have responded in turn, becoming more obstructionist as Republican demands become more extreme.
And that’s made it really easy for media outlets to blame “both sides” for political gridlock. As political scientists Thomas Mann and Norm Ornstein explain in their book “It’s Even Worse Than It Looks,” journalists feel a pressure to remain neutral when covering big political fights. So politics coverage has been dominated by the myth that both parties are equally to blame for the gridlock in DC.
But they’re not. And the only way to stop Republicans in Congress from continuing their drift towards the extreme is to be brutally honest about who’s responsible for breaking our politics.

This is actually not how politics were for most of the US history. Historically the 2 parties fought for the middle of the country, and it actually had a more moderating effect on politics. Compare that to multi-party systems which can make smaller more ideologically fringe parties in a position of power in their coalitions. So it's not the system, but it's other cultural and social changes in the last 30-40 years that have led to increased polarization. And no, it's not the "Republicans" fault. Both parties are responsible, it takes 2 to tango.

@@-i1007 Incorrect. If people want to vote for a third party, the presence of the third party in politics is the result of that voice being represented in government. Limiting the system to one choice or the other limits people in terms of what they're allowed to express by voting. A two-party system essentially constrains voters to either one polar opinion or the other, and having more representatives from different parties with different beliefs in every election would make that much, much less of an issue.

I think the issue is not that political parties emerged, but rather than key figures were so against them that they didn't account for how they would eventually emerge and then shape our politics. Parties are a logical way for voters to contribute to the course setting in a nation without each of them having to become hobbyist political theorists, the easy association of direction each party offers is extremely useful for the average person. It seems to me that regulating how parties operate is more realistic than wishing no parties existed.

I think it’s a fact of human psychology that we break down into two groups - those who put compassion first and those who put in-group identity first. In Canada we have multiple parties. One of them is called the Conservative Party and one of them is called the Liberal Party. Most of the population finds themselves identifying with one of those, even though they have other choices. So, shortcomings aside, a two-party system is the best reflection of the way people think. Maybe ranked ballot voting creates a place where third parties can succeed. Canada’s government has floated the idea. I like it. We may be split 50/50 on our first choice, but we may have the same second choice. That kind of voting might have given us President Perot in 1992. Not sure I love that idea…

I'm an atheist with many conservative values. I grew up in the south and this is not what I see from the under 40 crowd of repubs. But the left is the reason I left the party. polticians may be voting the same, but the people have such extreme views and ideas that detract so much from party lines 10 years ago. Tulsi Gabbard said once of the first things they do after your sworn in is separate you and essentially instruct you to vote no for anything the other side brings to the table. if if its good. She said if its good or something their voters want to happen.. theyre instructed to still vote no and theyll try and get it into one of their own bills. party win above all else.

And I feel that is the way it is because the democratic agenda is pushed much harder than the republican. Therefore making their opinion not only seem like the right way of thinking, but that you are somehow doing everyone a favor by only having that opinion. So I feel that the youth is being almost pure-pressured into this way of thinking. And with beliefs like climate change being a mostly democratic belief, democrats see republican views as evil because they'd rather not "help the planet" from a chaos they don't believe in.

Lies of conservative Republicans: The Civil War was about "states' rights." Confederates were patriots, not traitors. Barack Obama was born in Kenya and is Muslim. Michelle Obama was born a man. Liberals hate our police and military. Liberals hate America. The Affordable Care Act is communism. Trump had higher poll numbers than Lincoln (polls were established 70+ years after Lincoln). Climate change is a liberal hoax. I could go on for days. I truly don't understand how they can believe all of these things.

Just as a counter-argument (I don't think the 2 party system is anywhere near perfect) but I've heard this as a pro 2-party argument. In other countries like Italy, there are many political parties, and it makes it near impossible for any one of them to get anything done because they face opposition from almost every other party and nobody is anywhere close to a majority. The fact that we have a 2-party system means that we can actually get things done.
@TheZubata225
@TheZubata225 3 жыл бұрын
@@gabrieljreed You should read up a little more on government systems in Europe. For instance, in Czech Republic, you have fractured parliament with no-one holding majority, but you form a coalition (compromising on your program with similar parties) to get that majority. It is harder to get stuff done, sure, but it is also harder for extremists to pass harmful legislation. The two party system is horrid imo, as for a party striving to win, they only have to appear to be lesser evil to their counterpart, not be actually any good.

Mhmm, and What’s more interesting is when you compare republicans and democrats on a political compass. While we normally consider Democrats to be on the left their actually on the right close to moderate. Meanwhile the republicans are far right. The reasoning for this being the Cold War, and our fear of communism. Which means technically our two party system is a one party system. It’s also why the right can become more and more right while the left stays mostly the same.

And yet, being too extreme is supposed to alienate a large chunk of the electorate, because most people are around the centre. Bit left, bit right, rarely far from the centre. And you kinda see it with Bernie Sanders in the Democratic party: both times he lost to safer, more neutral candidates. They feared his centre-left politics (I'm Canadian) would alienate too many voters. To appeal to as many voters as possible, every party should want to attract neutral voters. Which means gravitating towards the centre, with some variation in the smiles of candidates. And yet, it doesn't seem to work like that with the Republican party. They just move more and more to the right, and their base just seem to follow them, dragging the whole political spectrum to the right, then somehow still getting the votes. I... don't understand the United-States, it seems. I don't get how someone like Trump could get elected anywhere. Maybe some village in Florida. But president? Really?

we should've listened to George Washington, he said that political parties would divide America and look where we are now EDIT: i did not mean one party only, that would be extremely controlling and make our political climate even worse. what i mean is that i think that political parties have divided america and that instead of two parties that each pick a candidate all the people running for president should run independently. this is for many reasons 1. voting for a person not a party ( ex : people who vote republican no matter who the candidate is ) 2. not getting stuck in a one or the other situation ( ex : “settle for biden” if you don’t want trump in office you have to “settle for biden” because if you vote on an independent or really small party you are basically throwing away your vote because only republicans and democrats win ) and i’m sure i’m forgetting some other good reasons but those are the main ones, hope this clarifies some things ☺️🇺🇸
