Learn how to create awesome 3D effects in this Adobe After Effects beginner tutorial! I will cover working with 3D layers, cameras and lights and show you everything you need to know to get started!
1. Working with 3D Layers
You can mark any layer in your After Effects composition as a 3D layer. Once you have enabled the 3D switch on the layer you can place the layer anywhere in the 3D space in your scene. Both images and video layers can be 3D.
2. Working with Cameras
You can create a camera in your After Effects composition and move it around the 3D elements in your scene. The camera defines how these elements will be viewed. You can animate the position, orientation and point of interest of the camera to create some cool 3D effects!
3. Working with Lights
Finally, you can place all sorts of lights in the 3D space of your scene and use them to illuminate the 3D layers. There are different types of lights available, like Spotlight, Point Light, Parallel Light and Ambient light.
Once you get the hang of working with 3D in After Effects you can start creating some awesome visual effects!
I have a blog post with some more information on my website that you can check out here:

You should make a video on filming techniques such as dynamic camera angles, how to transition beetween angles(short black screen?)and how to all together make the film look professional like an actual film (text, fonts,filters,title screens, movie introductions, dynamic effects to make the movie look intense,comedic,casual etc) please respond! Btw great videos by the way!

Hey Tobias, you should upload in 4k for KZfaq, much nicer quality due to higher bit-rate then 1080p videos. Anyways, fantastic video as usual.
@SurfacedStudio
@SurfacedStudio 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I don't think I'll be doing 4k until it is more widely supported and people would actually watch it in 4k. Most people actually watch in 480p, so I feel silly even uploading at 1080p. Also, Australian internet would have to get a lot, LOT faster before I could push 4k files online. Something for the future I guess :)

Hi tobias, thank you for all the tutorials, they have helped me a bunch. I was wondering, I used to use Maya for 3d, and if you selected the light, there was a option to see all of the objects in the scene that were effected by it. And you could choose weather or not a certain light effects an object. Is there anything like this that you know of for ae cc ? Cheers
@SurfacedStudio
@SurfacedStudio 8 жыл бұрын
+Rob Overholt Hi Rob, I don't think AE has that option. AE isn't meant for 3D work so you will not find the tools you typically find in your fully fledged 3D software package unfortunately

Hey Tobias, Since I'm new to After Effects (only used Final Cut Pro and a little bit of Motion) I stumbled upon your tutorials. Love them! But there's a problem I can't figure out. I have large image and with your help, I was able to set up a nice camera movement. But now I want to place text on that still image and the camera should hover around and over it. I already watch your tracking tutorials but somethings going horribly wrong. The tracker won't work on the still image and the camera I setup. Any tipps on what tutorial to watch or what to do?
@SurfacedStudio
@SurfacedStudio 7 жыл бұрын
Hey, I am not sure I understand what you are trying to do. Where do you want to place the text and why are you trying to track anything if you already have a proper camera moving about in your scene? Couldn't you just add the text as a 3D element in front of / top of the image - it'd automatically be sitting in your 3D scene as expected

I have a suggestion for a tutorial you could cover at some point or another. How to simulate the illusion of yourself climbing out of a TV screen like in The Ring. Is that possible to do in this program?
@SurfacedStudio
@SurfacedStudio 10 жыл бұрын
Yes it is possible. The funny thing is that a lot of those effects are actually done in real life, e.g. use an empty TV shell to have someone crawl out, then superimpose a fake 'screen' using After Effects. I have something in the works for that, but not sure when I'll get it done :)

You should do one about filming when there are mirrors and editing cameras out of mirrors.
@SurfacedStudio
@SurfacedStudio 10 жыл бұрын
Most scenes with mirrors are usually shot at an angle. The ones where the camera is 'edited out' is actually usually shot through a window because removing a camera can be very tricky unless you have a clever setup

is there any way to add "thickness" to the 3D layers? What I mean is this - I'm animating an opening door, and this door is a still image turned into a 3D layer. It rotates on it's Y axis and everything looks great until the edge of the door faces the camera - at this point the door looks paper-thin. i do realize that AE is not a 3d program but wondering maybe there is some clever workaround?

When you enable 3d in that layer, go to The properties of the layer(door) and increase the extrusion value. This basically adds the thicksness. ( sorry for bad English)

Great as usual! I just got one question, as I was working on previous projects in After Effects Cs5, i somehow detached my tools making them a separate window. I tried going into the window options but I still couldn't figure out how to keep the tool box on after effects instead of having it to be a deprecate window I can move around. Surfaced Studio Cheers. Do you think its possible displacement maps could enhance the 3Dness? Or are there reasons why it mightn't work?
@SurfacedStudio
@SurfacedStudio 10 жыл бұрын
As far as I'm aware, the displacement maps just work as a 2D effect. You can apply them on 3D layers, but the actual displacement will just be in 2D so i don't think it'd be much help enhancing the '3Dness' of the composition. For true 3D effects you will likely have to use a 3D program or plugin

Hey! Thanks for the nice tutorial :)) but is there a way to add thickness to the layers? Someone here asked this as well but the answer was to use the extrusion depth in the geometry options but as i looked for this. I couldnt find any extrusion depth... only 2 other options. And as i looked on google there were tutorials but only for Adobe After Effects C6... So i hope someone can help me and there is as well an other way :)) (I use Adobe After Effects CC)

To enable extrusions you need to go into your Composition settings and in the Advanced tab change the renderer to Ray-traced 3D

Hello, I don't really understand what you mean. If you want to 'Photoshop' something, you'd use Photoshop. What exactly are you trying to achieve?

Do you know how to get photoshop live 3d from ps cs6 extended into ae cc?, I can get to the point where you reimport your 3d psd file into ae but there's no option to use photoshop live 3d

I haven't actually used 3D PS layers in AE yet, never really had the need for it. If I want a 3D object I usually either use Element 3D (if it's a basic effect) or I use 3dsMax/C4D if it's a more advanced integration. I might look into it at some point :)

Is there a way to exclude a layer from being affected by the camera? I'm trying to create a space scene where an Element 3D object stays fixed in the background as I pan the camera, but no matter what I try the object insists on panning away from my scene with my After Effects camera. Any suggestions? Thak you in advance.

Yes, simply pre-compose the layer ;)

I don't have full sized film cameras so there's no need for a matte box. My DSLRs have lens hoods though! Also: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matte_box

In my After Effects program, I can't figure out how to rotate the image in space. It will allow me to move the image along the X and Y axes, and in and out on the Z axis, but that's all. In the tutorial, he appears to have a little yellow spot that he's working with somehow, and I don't have that on my screen. Can anyone help with this?

Thanks, that did the trick. Now, however, I don't seem to be able to move the image along the other three axes, only rotate it. How do I get back to the first mode, or set the program so it can do everything at once?

I have learnt that in panning the camera stays in a fixed position and it moves around horizontally but here i see that the camera is actually changing position when you were saying panning, is the term 'panning' contextual here ?
@SurfacedStudio
@SurfacedStudio 7 жыл бұрын
Unless I misspoke, the term 'panning' is not contextual. It's the movement of a fixed camera. The moment you have the camera moving it's a 'dolly' :)
@SurfacedStudio
@SurfacedStudio 7 жыл бұрын
Well assuming it moves smoothly in one direction. If you handhold it and swing it around (somewhat on the spot), I'd still call it 'panning' :)

Oh , now i get it. I learn everyday something new from your videos. You don't know how greatly you help , especially for those who can not afford VFX classes. A request i had , in your free time , please make a video where you list all the camera movements and show the motion of it practically.

Depends on what type of effects you work with. If it's something AE can offload to your GPU invest in that, if it's something your CPU will have to handle, invest in that

Hi again. is this possible to create in After Effects? www.istockphoto.com/gb/video/web-design-related-terms-gm472964601-19597474 I have now got my copy moving off the screen to the left and get bigger. My problem is that there is a centre point on the screen that it all seems to attach itself too. I need the text to start in the distance then get bigger and move off left of screen as if its a train driving past us. The problem is I want to start from the very right of the screen and move to the left in one small to large movement. I know its a bit hard to understand - I have moved the camera but all the effects seem to lock into the middle of the screen. Please look at this link to see what I need to do - after hours now I am about to pull my hair out. Thanks

I don't really do 'graphic design' per se and there is no 'standard' mouse to use for it - it's up to everyone's personal taste. Some people prefer to use a tablet instead of a mouse. I just use a basic high DPI mouse
