I had literally minutes to learn Audition for the first time and use it to replace what I would normally do to remove noise in a drawn out and time consuming way in Audacity (slowing my Premiere Pro workflow). This was the first tutorial (that looked good) that I found and whilst watching it actually cleaned up the most noisy track I've ever head to deal with, thanks for a clear and concise video. Bang on the money and a perfect introduction (for me) to the abilities of Audition CS6. Cheers.

I'll throw in my two cents... I sometimes get stuck with a noisy video where there's either hiss, hum, sometimes both. The problem can be fixed, with considerable patience and practice, after, you sometimes are amazed how much vocal detail and clarity can be recovered once the "noise" is gone or more accurately demoted to the background where it hardly is noticed. Do NOT attempt to remove all traces of noise. Doing so will also clip the sounds you want to keep and probably introduce artifacts which can be worse than the noise you're trying to remove. Be satisfied with removing most of the noise. It is a trial and error thing to strike the right balance. This kind of problem in my experience is best addressed in multiple steps. First do NOT use the normal noise reduction process where you capture a noise print. Doing so will mess up more than fix for this kind of noise. Instead click on Effects/Noise Reduction then begin with DeHummer. Determine if you can WHERE the video was made. Why? So you can determine which preset that can cancel the hum. In the states that's 60Hz. In many other parts of the world it's 50Hz. Select a small test area, then see which amount of Harmonics works best. For me it almost always is 8. Now set to loop and play around with the slope for best reduction without distortion. Apply to whole track. Next go to Effects, Noise Reduction/Hiss. Select whole track. Click the run button within the filter then press the capture noise floor button that in CS 5.5 is at the top left of the window that opens. Adjust the noise floor and reduce by sliders SLIGHTLY if needed, apply to whole track. Now the fun part... play the whole track, when you get to vocal sections, stop, and isolate just the portion of the track that has voices. Now from the Effect menu select special/voice enhancer and apply. Loop and play a couple times and if necessary adjust Amplitude and Compression from the Effects Menu, and select appropriate Amplify either up or down between 1 and 6 dB for non vocal sections. Repeat for entire track to help clarify vocals. If certain parts of the vocal are really weak, you can of course boost them too, but do so as last step after any hum and hiss are gone or you'll just increase the noise as well. Want to go beyond, then as additional step go to Effects/Amplitude & Compression, then multiband compressor and tweak some more. You can of course get carried away so don't over do. Play, you sometimes will be amazed at the improvement in quality.

Thanks Larry, another really useful tut! :) I wonder though... The NR filter in Audition always seems to come out sounding very 'garbled' (similar when you have a low bitrate MP3). Are there ways around this / better filters to use?

After playing around... I see there's an option under "Advanced" (twirl it down on the NR options). If you up the setting for "Precision" it GREATLY reduces the garbly-ness.

Very cool tutorial it helped me a lot with a narration I am making for a video. One thing I noticed, when I remove the nose that I get from my mic. it is some kind of strange humming or whistling in the background, but I remove it completely with the steps in your tutorial, for some reason I notice that my voice is a bit changed after the nose removal, sounds a little robotic, any way to fix this?

I have a problem with noise reduction. After doing it, the speaker voice have an effect of being in a big "hall" (like echo effect) simillar to the one in your example. IT is hard to describe, but it sounds a little bit robotic (like in a bathroom).Any way to fix that?

The more noise you try to reduce the more robot-like your speakers will sound. Make sure you have selected a clean noise print with no voice and then reduce the noise until the voice starts to degrade. It's always a balance, you can't reduce noise and make the voice sound perfect.

If I applied this effect, saved it and closed audition. Then I decided to change my mind and re-edit the clip how can I do that? There's no way for me to reset it

I wonder if this feature would become an issue for stock music/sfx sites that rely on "audio-watermarking" their preview MP3s to render them unusable before purchase. Great voice Larry, but I was hoping this would teach us how to use this effect and not ruin the speaker's voice by making it sound as though he is underwater. I think this is unusable. I prefer the way it sounds pre-adjustment.
