In this Video we show how to make different types of Adobe Bricks (a.k.a. Adobe Blocks).
The first part covers "Stabilized Adobe Bricks".
The second part the Adobe Bricks are stabilized with animal manure and ash.
They use NO CEMENT!

Hello All! Would like to clarify the following based on some comments received: Social work like this “should be fun”, so if we have a lively music on this is because we “latinos” are “colorful, lively music loving people”. This and “música tradicional panameña” is what our staff and volunteers listen to when they work or help one of their colleagues to get their Adobe Brick walls started….., this is a big tradition here in Panama see (Casa Quinchas Panama) where entire communities get together in festivity to produce such a "mud house". If you don’t like the music, just turn off the volume. We have made an effort to write up the ingredients and other details for this “Adobe Brick” making process as widely used today. If you are watching our videos through a phone you may not see our inserted “Comment Window/s”. Suggest you try using other devices such as Ipad´s, Note, Computer´s etc. Cement or No Cement? Both systems are shown on the Video. Also there is a Spanish version of this video. If you like it or not these are “Adobe Bricks”, one system stabilized with cement (research “Super Adobe System by Nader Khalili”), the other without cement. You choose what may be best for you! We try to give you the basics in this Video. A Video cannot substitute a course or substitute “hands on” experience with the soil and other ingredients at your disposal. No soil is identical in its composition, so experiment with different soil and ingredient compositions! The Video clearly indicates “Consult with a Soil Engineer” in your region to help you out with some basics to consider. Do also extensive research. This may save you a lot of time and frustration. We encourage you to engage in this wonderful and rewarding experience. Please stay positive and make productive comments here which can help others and help us to try and improve on our presentations! Thank you for watching our Videos! Viva Adobe Bricks! Hello Elhigh: You got a good point. If you look for speed then maybe you should look into Rammed Earth Systems. I like our Adobe Method for the simple reason that we make many different blocks, each one used for a specific purpose. The system should allow you get building approval due some of these Blocks allowing Rebar and Cement/Concrete filling. Its a low cost system, easy to teach to others to apply in our area preferably with a "Roof First System" (expl. Hypar Roofs)

Perro13ist: Thank you for your comments. You even have building codes for Adobe in Mexico, not here in Panama. We just got approval from the local Technology University on our Adobe Bricks. They have been tested and certified they surpass local building code. This allows us now to apply for building permits using our Adobe Bricks as building material...

Hello Cossack: We are not concerned in making holed bricks for material saving and/or lighter weight. We do holed bricks for columns to use rebar and cement when we go over 1 story. We use "Natural Non-Cement Stabilized Bricks" as from 30 cms above ground level. This provides more considerable savings and we are happy with the results. We use a Lime based plaster on the building to finish. Some of our "EcoRanchos"/"Majestic Dome" videos explain this process. Thanks for your comments and input!!

...we do need to wear them, along with protective gloves. This Video was improvised and the boys forgot to bring them (masks and gloves for the Cement part). This is a good observation from your part. I believe we also pointed this safety issue and mistake out on 2-3 different parts of the Video.... When you use the "Natural Ingredients", like in the second part of the Video, this safety equipment is not necessary.Thank you for your good observation and comment!

Cement stabilized Adobe takes about 15-20 to remove the form. In a normal "Adobe making work flow" the timing to remove your first form is after your 2nd or 3rd tray of Adobe's. Non-cement stabilized soil (example lime, manure or other) the Adobe's need much longer to set. With this second system you may need many more forms. With either system have slippery walls on your form-walls. We apply marine paint coating on our form walls and wash them after every application, this works fine for us.

Hello Gohot: Adobe brick making is perhaps the simplest and lowest cost method. There is also PEB and CEB, we prefer these both over Adobe but only for the reason that we may not need to plaster the finished product (you need to consider a final plaster with Adobe bricks).

Drying cycle min. 24-48 hours in shade or covered. The longer you leave drying, the stronger stabilized bricks become. We add enough water for the Bricks to settle in the wooden forms we use. The forms we remove in about 15-20 minutes....

Vasily: Our Adobe code is 300 psi. With a good foundation (GOOD SHOES), a good Roof (GOOD HAT) walls can have a very wide performance spectrum. We want "Breathing Walls". This goes from bricks that brake with a drop costing only a few cents, to the more expensive bricks you mention here. In our view its also a question of feasibility. You can spend thousands on your bricks, others only a few hundred. This does not necessarily mean that the more expensive is much better, it could be an overkill.

Hello All, first of all my apologies. This Video contained from its initial form full written documentation. The idea was to give a basic knowledge how to enable you to experiment, test and establish your own Adobe Bricks. We decided to do this in written form. For some reason all the written instructions and explanation where removed from the Video. I did not realize this until a few weeks ago. For those who speak or understand Spanish the same Video can be found in a Spanish Version. There all the instructions and written comments are still in place. Someone asked me if these bricks can be made Hollow. And the answer is "YES". In fact, you can make and use Hollow Adobe Bricks for your supporting Walls. We like to use this method here in Panama due the heavy rainfalls as it allows us a) to build a Roof first and once this is accomplished we don't worry about rainy days... b) you can fill these Adobes with Rebar and Cement (like you do with cement bricks) We make a total of about 7 different size/types of Adobe bricks.

When we use Superadobe (Adobe packed in Rice Bags) our experience shows that a Lime Plaster Mix works best for us. When we use Adobe Bricks we tend to use Mud Plaster, but we are not happy with it as we experience to many cracks and it is very labour intensive. When we use Adobe Bricks now we use them mainly for columns (not walls). For Walls we use CEB or PEB which require no Plaster....

Certain types of Manure improves a bit the water resistance of the Adobes. Its more of an ethical question, if the manure smells bad then I think no-one will want to use it. Others are not accustomed with the idea. There are many other alternatives you can use, one of them is "fly-ash". In the second mix of our Video we just want to show what could be mixed where you can use your hands and feet (no protection).... you could not do that by adding Lime. As said, many alternatives are available.

We have programs in place in Panama to help the poor. We do not only teach but donate at times also material (example cement, barb wire, Agro bags etc.). The first question to determine, "who is considered poor"? The second question: "Does this poor family want a mud home"? Our experience: "The Poor" mostly aspire for "Cement Homes" because they consider this progress, you may find they reject a mud home.. Don't loose your strive to help others! If we can be of help please let us know...!!

Good Eye Cossack, indeed in the 2nd half of the Video the boys used too much water and little straw. Nevertheless in this climate (tropics) it just takes a little longer to dry such mixture and at the end it is still good to use (drying time for this mix was about 30 days) in the shade.

Hello J - do not know if it could work. Suggest you try to consult with a local soil expert and if not available suggest you make trials on smaller brick samples. Try to keep your soil compositions (specially the clay content) in check.

A method to check the brick. Well dried adobe brick should not fall apart after sitting in the water for 24 hours, and shold not break if dropped from 2 meters high (Shepelev, 1989).

Hello OG - am not sure about using any type of straw but to me it seems possible. It is worth testing what you you may have access to. We try to give you the basics in our Video. A Video cannot substitute a course or substitute “hands on” experience with the soil and other ingredients such as straw type which may be at your disposal. And in General covering some other questions I have been asked here: In our weather (Tropical) we prefer the method using "cement stabilization". This mainly due our high humidity content in the air. This will withstand the elements much better. We can also use the "organic stabilized adobe bricks" but this involves other technical concerns to keep this bricks or walls protected from the elements. In fact it is a long tradition in Panama using these totally natural ingredients. These structures are called "Casa Quinchas" here in Panama. For "Casa Quinchas" and any "non-cement" stabilized Adobe you have to ensure a solid and overlapping roof to protect these adobe structures from rain. Needless to say that this system is much less in cost and it is much friendlier to handle by the workers (no need to use gloves during the wall building or molding process, as an example). Also easy and fun for children to participate in the building process. Some Quincha Houses here in Panama have stood hundred of years. But if the roof gets damaged and rain pours through a Roof these Adobe walls get damaged, Its a "melt away effect". Damage is also caused when they are plastered with cement or a water proof paint. When this happens they get damaged as moisture gets trapped as their "breathing effect" is obstructed. And for those interested in alternative eco friendly building methods: Over the years experimenting with many type of "natural structures" we have completed the logistic of a system where we combine our Adobe Rammed Hand or Machine Pressed Bricks (cement stabilized) with a Hypar Roof structure. The advantage of this that we can first build the roof and then complete the structure without worrying about the elements (example rain) during the building process. A 36 m2 (about 400 sq foot) House plus an 18 m2 loft (about 200 sq. feet) after completing the foundation takes a 4 men crew two (2) weeks to build from scratch. If you need a larger structure you just attach additional same/similar sized structures. You can search to learn more about this Roof system under "Hyperbolic Paraboloid by Dr. Nez" or "Latex Concrete Habitat". I can assure you, its fascinating.

The method of building with the least expensive method to produce Adobe's (natural stabilizer in the second part of our video) we recommend always "Good Shoes, good Hat and Breathing Walls". This recommendation in fact goes also for other more expensive Adobe's that may use cement, lime or a polymer etc.. Adobe structures last for many years in practically any environment with proper execution.

The only big advantage I see in this method is the portability of the finished product. You could skip a fair amount of material handling by simply using small (compared to, for instance, a commercially-done concrete pour) hand-movable slip forms. Lay the form, fill, wait an hour while the mix firms up a bit, pull the form. Repeat as necessary. If reinforcement is added, you can lay it an and attach as you go, and everything rises with the pouring steps.

Project sounds "environmental friendly" teaching. If you want to use cement the amount depends on the type of material you have available (earth). Normally 10% Portland Cement is suitable for almost any type of clay/sand/silt combo but your brick may turn out to be more expensive then a "conventional cement brick". Sometimes 5% Cement is sufficient. Please refer to the 2nd part of our Video for "Natural Stabilizers" as alternative (no cement). We do not use asphalt emulsion in any of our mixes.

Handmade Adobes are not recommended for driveways. Better and faster is using a Polymer stabilizer in the Adobe mix with less moisture content. There are several companies out there which have a good Polymer product such as Solitac, DirtGlue etc. Search on Google and find out about the process "Soil Stabilization". The advantage of this is that you mix and compact the Earth Mixture on site. Buy from a company that will give you a good polymer and technical support including on Soil Analysis!

Adobe can be many things. In our construction world what is wrong calling them also Mud, Dirt, or Homes built out of Earth or Super Adobe, Earthbags etc.? In principal and in my view all these names are valid for this type of structures. In Spanish our Earthbag layers are called "Chorizos".... "Chorizo" is a stuffed sausage of Spanish origin... Then we have here in Panama the "Casa Quinchas", again using mud material but with a different application technique.
