Great video! Just want to throw in that the shape builder tool can supplement these tools nicely as well. I use it like a fine-tune version of the divide function to split out very specific intersections of objects.

can you make a tutorial how to convert an complex logo into b/w and then making the white transparent? and i am having trouble using path finder when it comes to many objects with many layers on it!

These are really great tutorials! Have you put together educational material for sites like Udemy? Theres a lot of potential in these screencasts, am sure a lot of folks would be more than willing to pay for course length material.

@@MattBorchert I'm knowledgeable in pshop, and have recently been in illustrator more, but there's only so much crossover. This channel shall be my new home for a while haha. Thanks for helping me learn on the job!

Thank you very much. I have text over a jpg image with the goal to embed the text into the image (ex: cut the text out of the image and leaving an "imprint" look). However, none of the pathfinder tools work when both the image and text are selected. It keeps bringing up the message, " the filter produced no results. lease select two or more filed and overlapping paths." What am I doing wrong?

You cannot use a jpeg. If you want to use a jpeg image you should be working inside of Photoshop instead. :)

Thank you. Does the same apply for PNG? (so only shapes made in illustrator can be used with this method?)

Yep. Illustrator is a vector program, so it works with things like fonts and shapes that are made inside Illustrator. JPGs and PNGs are raster (pixel based rather than point based) so to manipulate those properly you should use a raster program - ala Photoshop. :)
