Just a quick video that demonstrates how to transfer VHS tapes to the Mac Mini using Premiere Pro and the ADVC 110 firewire DV converter. The IEEE Firewire DV converters are no longer made. You must by them used.

Im confused. I bought the canopus to transfer vhs tapes and convert them digitally. I only received 1 set of red white and yellow wires going from my vcr into my canopus machine. How do I get the signal out to a regular usb going into a modern day laptop (2016 macbook)? What wires do I need to buy?

It is impossible to understand how you connect the 1394 to the device, it looks as if it is not connected at all from the front

You connect the Firewire port of the Firewire DV converter to the Firewire DV port on the PC with a Firewire cable. You might need the power adapter for the ADVC 110 or it could be defective.

What version of premier pro are you using? I have 2021. I don’t have a DV option for capture settings. Using Canopus advc 300. Connection is the same FireWire to lighting.

You need Thunderbolt to Firewire adapters. You might also need the power supply.

@@TechTVusa Thanks for the reply. I have all that. My AVDC 300 is plugged in and powered on. I am going component out of the VCR and saw the signal on a monitor. That goes into the Canopus ADVC-300. It is set to analog. out the back I have firewire 400 out converting to firewire 800 and then to thunderbolt which goes into my Mac Book Pro 2013 with Catalina. I have Premiere Pro 2021 and iMovie. In iMovie the connected device does not show up under my camera options. In premiere Pro I dont have the option to change the capture from HDV to DV. Is there something I am missing?

Thanks for commenting on the other video too. My laptop has thunderbolt 2 inputs and I am adapting that tothe firewire 800 and so on. It doesn't seem to be working.

I have the exact same setup. Yet, Premier won’t give me the DV option to switch to. I only have HDV as an option. Any thoughts?

I pretty much use a similar setup but instead of the box you have i use my old 3ccd panasonic mini dv which allows me to plug in my vcr using s-video. Im trying to figure what settings to use for when capturing vhs or mini-dv using adobe premiere

Great vids, but I'm lost. Can you point me to complete tutorial of firewire for VHS conversion of 80's videos. Got about 60 old family vids to do and want to get it right, but I'm wondering if one of the newer plug in digital version wouldn't just be easiest.

You connect the VHS Deck to the DV converter with RCA cables and then connect the DV converter to the PC with a Firewire cable. It is that simple. The latest version of Premiere Pro on the Mac side does not support Firewire but iMovie does as seen by the video link below. @@TechTVusa Another dumb question. Sorry. I am choosing between this and the Elgato converter (I know you hate these). Cost about $90 and gets decent reviews. I will send a link with some other dude reviewing. Curious about the lifeloss (think i am using this right), on the file format on the Elgato. The Elgato is in MP4, H.264 (have no idea what these mean) and ready for KZfaq or Facebook. I think a 2 hour VHS will be about 2G (not certain). Just curious on the FireWire sizing and ability to distribute for family via internet vs its ability to retain quality. If I am going to have to compress to upload or share, would it be better to just do it with Elgato, or am I giving up to much of the original file. Any other videos you recommend would be appreciated?

@@TechTVusa By the way, you remind me of my father, in a good way. He had a shop called Audio, Video Dynamics in the 80', 90, 00's, but he was more focused on pre-digital. We just cleaned out his shop last year and got rid of tons of stuff that looks like your FireWall Converter. Spent many hours on lifts as teenage installing video cameras and stuff I did not understand. I guess a lot hasn't changed. Thanks for your videos!!

any chance at all of getting an updated guide? I've got everything setup correctly from what I can tell and yet I cannot for the life of me get the advc 110 to be detected by premiere as a capture device. Quicktime detects it just fine so I know everything is connected correctly, wondering if you've run into this issue as well in the newest version of permiere cc? tia

Maybe the latest version of OS X and Premiere Pro will not make use of Firewire devices while iMovie can. It is OK to use iMovie

I have heard the latest version of Premiere Pro dropped support for Firewire on the Mac side. You can use iMovie. Even the M1 iMac supports Firewire as seen in the video link. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qK6He6hkztKmkok.html

Hi! Isn't it possible to transfer with the firewire connection (all the cables/adapters you have used) directly to the computer with the thunderbolt 2 and use a software or just the Premiere pro? Do I have to have the Canopus to do it so? Thank you!

Unless you have a digital camcorder with Firewire ports you will need the ADVC 110.

Hello there, I am in the process of digitizing all of my Mini DV tapes. I am using a 2017 iMac with Premiere 2019. I have a Thunderbolt 3-2 adapter, Thunderbolt 2-firewire 800, then a Firewire 800-Mini DV cable that plugs right into the cameras I am using (Canon ZR 65 for Mini DV and a Sony TRV-140 for Digital 8). All the clips capture fine, but I am having an irritating issue with metadata. For whatever reason, all of the original camera metadata (Date and time of recording) is being replaced with the date and time of capture. Not at all what I want for archival purposes. Any idea? I've already been through Adobe's online help to no avail, although my case is still open. *To add, I have confirmed that this is indeed a software issue, as these tapes do indeed have original metadata preserved, which I verified by using imovie, which did preserve that data but is a pain to use overall.

@@TechTVusa Thanks for the answer, there is a pci-e firewire card in the computer. I have a blackmagic intensity pro 4k card installed but it seems to give a slightly darker picture. When I make one recording using blackmagic and one using dv, I can put it on KZfaq and send it to you so you can see if everything is OK. Thanks again for the answer.

Not sure about Wind DV but you can use any software program that will work with a DV camcorder.

@@Alice.59 You asked if the Adobe software is needed. I stated any software that can work with a DV camcorder (Firewire) will work with the Firewire DV converters. Does it make sense now? FCPX, iMovie and the Edius software will work but I am not sure about WIN DV. Does it make sense now?

I have a new Mac Pro 2019 tower and Premiere Pro 2020. Is this still the best way to convert analog video VHS or Mini DV in 2020 with that hardware? Is there an updated version of the ADVC 110 that is better?

If you have a MINI DV CAM with Firewire you can use the DV CAM like a Firewire based DV converter. IEEE Firewire DV converters are no longer made. You have to buy them on Ebay. I think it is the best option.

Can this setup used for Windows PC with Thunderbolt? I tried daisy chaining from my ADVC-110 as shown in the youtube video, Connected Firewire 400 to 800 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter and then thunderbolt 2 to USB-C from apple adapter. It does not light up my ADVC110o digital or analog selectors. I have the vcr turned on and connected

There is a difference between Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C adapters and Cables. USB-C cables are not active. Thunderbolt 3 cables are. That might be the problem.

The ADVC 110 may be defective.

**not all firewire hosts output the 12v some very late ones only supply 5v instead of 12v. I would imagine that adapter he is using is super compliant and has the 12v output (and at enough current.) You can test this if you had access to a (very rare now days) powered fire wire hub or a PCI fire wire card (I think PCIe will also output 12v but I have encountered allot of 'mobile' solutions output only 5v. The bus power 1394 provides would be cool if it were consistent. (Fun fact, the vast majority of my PCI based firewire 400 card still work fine in windows 10)

Thanks so much for your great videos! Does this ADVC 110 device allow you to capture 10-bit uncompressed? I am about to start digitizing my library of material - from Betamax, VHS, 3/4" , Betacam video on up - and I think I really need to save it for heritage purposes in an uncompressed or lossless format - and want to find the right tools -- I will have TBCs on the legacy machines so that is not an issues. I also saw on an another video where you mentioned the Blackmagic shuttle. I also remember about 15 years -- AJA was making some nice A/D devices. Any thoughts are much appreciated. Keep up the great job!

The Canopus ADVC 110 will capture to Mini DV (DV-25) only. No 10-bit uncompressed. Your 3/4" and Betacam tape decks would have BNC connectors. Blackmagic Design and AJA make products to capture from those devices. The Intensity Shuttle requires a TBC to capture old worn out VHS tapes. Additionally, I have a question, is it possible to bring a VHS resolution 480, to say a 1080, and not have it look like stretched out crap? It seems youtube automatically turns all VHS footage into a format that is 480 max. Do capture devices upscale say a 480 to 1080, yet hold the letterbox, as if a letterbox 4:3 living inside a 1080 resolution? So pretty much a square shape of footage living/playing inside a 1080 resolution, and yet still look good/decent, or is stretching/upscaling the only way? I don't understand how on a regular tv back in the day, say a 32" tube tv, a vhs looked great, and yet on a 27" HD OLED tv monitor, it looks like crap.
