From what I have seen, baby orangutans learn things from mimicking their mothers. That's why when the older girl came over and showed them how to get the honey, they figured it out. But I have also noticed (and to be fair, these were older orangutans who did this) that some orangutans CAN naturally take a tool (be it a coconut shell or a piece of string or what have you) and figure out how to use the tool to get what they want.

Monkeys learn to use touch screens to see the contents of an image. It is very easy for them because they are able to remember image patterns very well. David Shelp well, it failed lol. I think it was “unexpected” when the older one came & did it. They watch us all day long and most of what WE do isn’t relevant so they don’t really care but watching an older peer do it....that’s cool lol. I think the “experiment” proved that young orangutans are more like our kids than we realized.
@pomponi0
@pomponi0 4 жыл бұрын
I suppose the experiment proved they're not born with the instinct to use tools, but rather they're like us and are born with a powerful brain that can watch and learn when they're young, and can problem-solve on their own when old enough. To be honest I thought this had been widely accepted since like the 70's, and they were just replicating the experiment, not creating new knowledge

People getting huffy about the vet's comment about tool use need to listen carefully. She said in GENERAL (i.e. most don't but there may be exceptions) and specifically talks about BORNEO orangutans. Yes, orangutans do use tools in this way but not in all areas. Borneo orangs usually don't, whereas Sumatran orangs do. But, hey, what does a vet who actually studied and works with these animals every single day know...

@@bobanderson6656 The same way humans learned everything we know. We didn't instinctually know how to do do complex math, build tools or create fire. We used our ability to problem solve to take the knowledge we had learned from our parents and community and apply it to something new to solve a new problem or fill a need. That is what a discovery is, once discovered it is then shared and taught to others until it spreads and gets taught to new generations as common knowledge. Plenty of other animals learn new techniques for something and pass it on to their communities making them have unique strategies when compared to groups in another part of their habitat. Many dolphin and whale pods learn unique hunting strategies that others of their kind in another part of the world don't know how to do. You try that experiment with a small human child and it likely won't know what to do either without being shown. We both learn through watching others and being taught.

Your experiment completely shows why you should stay the hell out of their business, put your efforts into conserving areas where they can live free and let the parents show them how to live. It’s as I and many other people suspect this place is really just a way for you to play with baby orangutans-an expensive way to make people feel sorry so you can fund your little fantasy world

I'm sure they would be happy to oblige if you teach them how to bring the babies' parents back from the dead. Remember this isn't a daycare, it's an orphanage

@T_T Leader In my opinion, they shouldn't send the adults back into the wild either. They may not survive living up in the trees as they have walked too much on the floor! I say keep them safe for a lifetime and encourage breeding till they're no longer endangered
