Awesome! I love how this method allows the flash to adjust its output without you having to buy expensive ETTL transmitting triggers. Kind of like a digitalized, automated Vivitar 285 metering system, where it makes output adjustments as needed.

Thanks Mark. I am using a Metz 58 AF2 with SMDV Flash Wave III and it works beautifully. Metz works almost the same as the Nikon you're showing. Once again, thanks. It's very informative.

Mark Thank you for your tutorials. This is really a very good option for those who has only manual triggers/recievers and want some off camera flexibility which works Automatic (semi).

@carlbertossi No you dont need an external meter to meter flash from the subject. when you give the aperture of your choice on the flash. it will give a distance according to its capability with the aperture you just gave. Lets say it shows 1m-12m on the back display of flash. the flash can move freely away or towards the subect within that radius or length.

The Vivitar 283/285 were more versatile because you could detach the sensor and put it on a remote extension cable.

Mark - Seems to me that you should say that only the latest flashes have this feature. There likely are tens of thousands of Canon and Nikon flashes in use that don't (580 EX, etc.), and lots of people will be puzzled - not what you are trying to do with OneonOne, I'd think. I'd think a link to Part 1 would be good, in case the first episode people see is Part 2.

@2dolphin4 In this mode the flash doesn't "know" the distance. It calculates the distance range based on the guide number and the ISO, aperture settings on the camera. When a picture is been taken within the calculated range, the flash turns off when it senses through the sensor that enough light has reflected from the subject for a proper exposure. The results are unpredictable when outside the range (usually underexposure & overheating flash heads)

A really useful video. Many thanks for explaining this feature. I was half aware of it but have never used it. I wonder why it is not very well known? I think there must be a few other older flashes out there that have this feature as it was used before TTL came around.
@jaminthomas
@jaminthomas 12 жыл бұрын
@pineze2 It wont work with ST-E2. This feature is older technology and works for on-camera flash and has been superseded by ETTL where the metering is done in the camera. The one real benefit of this method is when a subject is backlit, the same amount of light is output within the distance limits, so you get consistent exposures. ETTL, as good as it is, can get thrown off when you change your composition.

To mrtgm3: The SB-700 does have a command mode and, therefore a metering system. But, unlike the SB-900 that can support three sticks of slaves, the SB-700 only supports one.

Trying to set the 14 custom functions of the flash, I noticed that I could only set functions 0-1-2-7-8-9-10-11-14. It won't let me go through the other functions (3-4-5-6-12-13). Since I don't have my manual with me, I can't see if it is a malfunction or not. Is there someone with the same problem?
