Power door locks have been around for many year, but manufacturers use different wiring schemes. One wiring scheme is resistive rest at ground, which has been used in the past by various manufacturers including Ford Motor Company. Resistive rest at ground is meant to keep both power door lock solenoids grounded, and then a positive pulse is applied when needed.
The power door solenoid or actuator is nothing more than a DC motor type component, which changes the direction of the lock actuation by reverse polarity. In other words, the door lock is actuated by reversing the polarity going to the solenoid. Here is where a relay becomes a very versatile controller of sorts.
Here's how the circuit works:
Power is fed from the fuse to terminal 85 of the relay coil. This right away tells us that the relay actuation is going to be by ground, which is a lot safer. From the fuse, power is also fed to terminal 87 of the relay. This is a variation of how we normally connect terminal 30, which normally goes to power. But, not here where terminal 30 is used as an output. Terminal 87A is connected, on both relays, to chassis ground.

Yes, exactly... Double Though Single Pole is fine. If all you can get is a double pole that's fine too, just don't use the extra pins. Keep me posted on your development. Good luck.

I think it would help the illustration if you went over the last part graphically, showing the position of the actuator, up and down, when you change the position of the switch. The words are there to follow it, but to trace what's going on, you have to pause the graphic to follow the path of the circuit. This is a very useful video, though, and helps a great deal.

it would be great if you could highlight the wiring for each switch position. Then the circuit route would stand out while you are talking and the viewer could see how and why the switch completes the circuit!

Ground, as the schematic says goes on the center of the switch and then to chassis. Do that and post back with more. Thanks for trying.

Well the fastest way is to use the front doors to trigger a relay at the rear door. The relay in turn also actuates the lock motor/actuator. The other way is to use the circuit seen here. Remember, you need two relays in this circuit, one for up and one for down Lock/Unlock. Makes sense?

Hi, ADPT. I have dodge pick up ram 1500 '2002 with quad door cab. front driver side and front passenger side does have power door lock on it the quad door cab doesn't have power door lock. I would like to install the switch and power door lock on it. How to connect them? Thank you

In either position if the switch stays on the motor will keep running so it will drain the battery, most cars have the switch integrated in the drivers side motor and the switch will stay on,so in this case use a central lock module which only delivers a pulse instead of continuous current.

very usefull graph thanks. i dont need to use my brain to figure it out. in that case i prefer using 4 actuators 2 wire with central lock switch somewhere for further secure.

Hi, can you please say why it is better to use a relay and it is not sugested to wire up directly the central unit to battery and to the acuator? Without using a relay may drain your battery ?

is it possible to wire the relay and actuator in such a manner so that the actuator can control the choke of a generator..moving 'up' then 'down' in about 2 seconds?.....thanks

I got the lock working and the alarm working but only when one is connected to the actuator because when I connect both to the actuator it looses power and the actuator barely moves how do I connect both of my switches and alarm to the actuator ?

Will this work with a 2002 Dodge Ram? I have the door switches, harnesses, & motors from a donor truck but have to wire them up using relays, my truck came with manual locks.

Thanks. I was just confused because from the factory the switches use an in-line ohm resistor to lock & unlock the doors. I didn't know if I would have to solder in those resistors somewhere or if that was when using with the computer. I'm guessing since it's being wired completely different with SPDT relays they aren't needed.

Right, it's a totally new installation. So long as the actuators are 12 volts, and 99% they are, you're fine. Good luck.

Jacob Lindsey Some systems like Nissan the switches are networked, so it's not like the switch closes a contact. It's more like the switch outputs a CODE-Up or a CODE-Down... So be careful...

If controlled by module, there is a missing B+ input to it.

SPDT or single pole double through switch. If you have no SPDT, then use DPDT, but make sure they're momentary switches, not constant.
