In 2003, Jack Nicholson and Daniel Day-Lewis were the front-runners to win the Best Actor Oscar, but then they lost in a shocking upset to Adrien Brody for The Pianist. In this video, I break down that year's nail-biting Oscar race and discuss the reasons why Brody defeated Nicholson and Day-Lewis for the award. #oscars #academyawards #bestactor #adrienbrody #jacknicholson #danieldaylewis #brianrowevideo

The Pianist is a great film. It is more of a solo character study than we usually see in the sub-genre. Adrien definitely deserved his Oscar and has delivered wonderful character performances in subsequent years showing his win not to be a fluke. All of the other nominees were already Oscar winners. It makes sense that the Academy would recognize Brody for his masterful performance far beyond his years.

Adrien Brody was freaking amazing in The Pianist. He totally deserved to win. His performance was emotional, raw, powerful and riveting. The Pianist is also one of my favourite movies ever. I thought it should've won Best Picture over Chicago but because of Harvey Weinstein it probably had no chance.

Now you look back during the 2022-23 season were none of the actors didn't sweep the big five awards. Brendan Fraser, Michelle Yeoh, Ke Hey Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis didn't win all 5 awards. None of them even won at the BAFTAs.
@seankoontz4235

@tomosmarland4637 Right, and Quan was expected to sweep but as we know lost the BAFTA to Barry Keoghan (which is fine by me). They went four out of four with SAG, which is the real precursor to look at now. They went four out of four in 2021-22 as well

@seankoontz4235 . I think it really matters about who's based on what was the last award show before the Oscar. In the 2020-21 season, all the actors that won the BAFTA also won the Oscar .Anthony Hopkins only precursor award was the BAFTA that year, so his winning at the BAFTA did increased his chance of winning the Oscar because the BAFTAs was the last show before the Oscars that year. This year, all the actors that won at SAG won the Oscars Jamie Lee Curtis's only precursor award was the SAG. Her winning the SAG was important because the SAG was the last awards show before the Oscars this year. Imagine if the BAFTAs was the last ceremony before the Oscars. Do you think Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan would've won the Oscar.

Adrien Brody absolutely deserved it!! Not just a phenomenal, raw, emotional, and gut-wrenching portrayal, but a great reward for performances in Holocaust movies gone unrewarded. To this day, I’m in disbelief that the race was as close as it was. In my eyes, Brody was the only conceivable winner.

The *NSFC,* *BSFC,* and *César* don't have much sway over the *Oscars.* The four main *Oscar* precursors are *Critics' Choice,* *Golden Globes,* *Screen Actors Guild,* and *British Academy of Film and Television Arts.* _DDL_ won *SAG* and *BAFTA.* _Nicholson_ won *GG.* Both _DDL_ and _Nicholson_ tied for *CC.* I should point out that *GG* had more prestige, because it has been around since 1944. *SAG* was first awarded in 1995 and *CC* in 1996. *BAFTA* has been around since the '40s, too, but they usually took place AFTER the *Oscars,* sometime in the spring, so they were viewed as an afterthought regarding the *Oscar* race. By 2000, *BAFTA* saw *SAG* and *CC* joining *GG* as *Oscar* precursors and decided to get into the game, too, moving their ceremony to BEFORE the *Oscars* the following year. For what it's worth, I've been a longtime *Oscar* watcher and I too thought (like everyone else) that it was a dead heat between _DDL_ and _Nicholson._ At the *Oscar* party I attended, we had a contest to see who could pick the most winners. I went with _Nicholson_ for Best Actor. Needless to say, everyone was shocked when _Adrien Brody_ won. Talk about a major upset!

I still regard Catch Me If You Can as DiCaprio's best performance and its a shame he didnt get in. He starts out as a frustrated teen who runs away from home, masters the art of cheque fraud, becomes an airline pilot, becomes a doctor, becomes a lawyer, gets engaged, has to deal with the death of his father and his mother starting a new family without him and keep looking over his back for Tom Hanks. I had such sympathy for him despite being a criminal and in the end after running, he didnt know where to go and eventually his only friend was the one person who had been pursuing him the whole time, Hanks. The fact he was also in Gangs of New York makes me think he might have got nominated for the work he did that year in general and the Miramax machine helping his cause.

@@seankoontz4235 3 of the big 5 awards is quite a showing. Very, very few pictures get that - the last one I can think of being Nomadland (Picture, director and actress). I'm having difficulty finding a truly complete list of films that took 3 or more of the top 5 awards (Geez, in a world of digital trivia, you'd think the internet would have a ready, up-to-date list) but I count sixteen altogether. This was a really good ceremony. Lots of upsets and Steve Martin's monologue was absolute killer. If I had to pick a winner, it would have been Daniel Day-Lewis and even if he won here, I think he still wins in 2008 and 2013, giving him the record 4 acting Oscars. I don't know if the Academy would have wanted to give Jack a 4th for About Schmidt. Brody winning was definitely a surprise. I do agree his win was due to all the other nominees having won a then combined seven Oscars. I think Caine could have been swapped out for Richard Gere and since Chicago was the Academy darling of 2003, who knows what would have happened. 2003 is just a hard year to analyze.

Years like this is why Oscar watchers dream the improbable - the Academy to release a breakdown of how members voted. Did Brody barely squeak by with a win because Lewis and Nicholson cancelled each other out? Similarly, in 1950, did Baxter and Davis's noms lead to a Holiday win? We'll never know but Price Waterhouse does.

I've seen all the five movies for Best Actor that year, and I totally agree with the Oscar voters to give it to Adrien Brody for "The Pianist." I think Jack Nicholson (for About Schimdt) was probably a close second but he had won 3 already before that year. Nick Cage was awesome but it's rare that Oscar go to a corky character. Daniel Day-Lewis is a brilliant actor but "Gangs of New York" is really dark, as most of Scorsese films. I love "The Quiet American" and Michael Caine is superb. I’m unsure of how the groundswell of support started during the voting period for Pianist, other than many voters blasted with screeners. Probably the biggest upset in this category that very few foresaw. Nicholson and his third Oscar in my mind is for AS. He didn’t rely on his usual Jack stuff for this film, unlike AGAIG which is virtually unwatchable today. Caine (who reeeeeally wanted to win this this year) told Brody before the show he has to prepare something in case he wins. Brody brushed him off and basically told him it ain’t gonna happen. But Cage and Caine were never in this. I think Day Lewis was a bit over the top which swung votes to Brody and Nicholson. It’s really incredible how Pianist took key awards in writing, director and lead actor and not best pic. It was probably a razor thin victory for Chicago. If the weighted ballot would’ve been around in 2003, Chicago wouldn’t have won. I never get tired of seeing Brody win. The kiss, when he says there comes a time when everything makes sense, this isn’t one of those times. When he returns next year and uses the breath spray before he names Charlize lead actress. Perfection.

this video could have been 2 minutes long, because the reason that Adrien did win that year is obvious and very simple ... Adrien Brody gave the performance of a lifetime !!! You will never forget his part if you saw the movie ... one of the most deserved wins ever, no doubt about that

I predicted Day-Lewis at the time on the basis of the SAG + it being exactly the kind of performance the voters tend to swoon over. A British actor playing a real person, putting on an accent, and hidden under makeup. Nicholson already had 3, Caine had two. My personal preference among the 5 was and remains Nic Cage. Adapted Screenplay was a surprise as well, with "The Hours" being the odds-on favorite. Supporting Actor was a legit two-way race. Those perceptions may be subjective at times, Cooper did have the lead in most betting markets but not by a lot.

17:21 - I was pretty much with you up until this statement. Zellwegger winning the SAG was the surprise. But I'm not aware of many serious prognosticators that year who *didn't* think Kidman was going to win.

Video topic suggestion: the absolute fuckery that happened with the Judas and the Black Messiah acting nominations (Kaluuya and Stanfield both nominated for Supporting even though they're the co-leads, and nobody that I know of even campaigned LaKeith in Supporting). Call me mad but I legitimately believe there was some conspiracy there. My feeling at the time was that the Academy was so sick of having co-leads be campaigned for and win Supporting noms, that they actively decided to put LaKeith on there over whomever was 5# in the votes as an act of "take this Supporting nom and CHOKE ON IT!", even though to best of my knowledge nobody even knew they could vote for LaKeith in Supporting, let alone actually did that. There must be something I'm missing that other people know, but the whole thing feels incredibly sus to me.

Why didn’t you get into why he wasn’t there? Some people may not know and a situation like that should not be pushed aside. Now it seems like a portion of your video is celebrating him winning the award while not acknowledging whatsoever the reason he couldn’t be there as if you don’t care. Which I know (hope) isn’t true

Because it’s off-topic given that’s about this shocker of a race. It could be its own video, and it had been discussed at length in other film channels
@TheAwardsContender
@TheAwardsContender 2 жыл бұрын
I apologize if that’s how that came off. If the video’s focus was the Director race, I would have absolutely gone into why he wasn’t there, but I wanted to get to the Actor race since that was indeed the focus. It felt weird to not talk about Director at all since the winner was the same film. I of course care about that situation and don’t want to come off as celebrating that man. Thanks for watching.

I think it's actually very stupid that the academy waits so long to award an actor. It's a form of sexism and I'm saying this as a woman. Adrian and Eddie Redmayne are still the youngest actors to win right? Both born in the 70s and 80s. Jennifer Lawrence should not be the only actor born in the 90s to have an Oscar. I mean come on...

This maybe controversial but I think they should have ousted Jack Nicholson and Michael Caine from the best actor list and put Robin Williams for One Hour Photo and Adam Sandler for Punch Drunk Love in their place. Because those performances have stood the test of time more and were career defining performance for both actors. Also I wasn't that enamored with Nicholson in About Schimdt I like the film I just didn't buy him playing this sad loser and Caine's performance I honestly completely forgot about untill watching this video.

I guess in terms of acting Daniel Day Lewis's performance was the finest performance,it was an extraordinary performance and a character ,in my opinion Adrian Brody won the Oscar because it was more emotionnal performance and the subject matter was more sensitive, holocauste World War II ,it's only for that reason ,but we can all agree that Day Lewis was way better !!
