Also they decend from different animals. Llamas are domesticated Guanacos while Alpakas are domesticated Vikunjas.

Llamas are actually so closely related to Camels that they can interbreed and produce fertile cross breeds.

Theyre both so absurd and I love them. I especially loved Llamas after a previous teacher of mine told me a story about how his llama. He only had llamas for protection for his sheep, and one of his llamas beat the absolute crap out of a cougar. I don't remember if he said the llama killed it, but at the very least it made the cougar reconsider its life choices. Incredible.

XD I once went to an Alpaca festival & they were SUCH dainty creatures! There was an obstacle course that was like "Walk on astroturf-- watch out, it's a DIFFERENT TEXTURE!" Or "Can you climb this 2" incline ramp? Steady now!" & finally "Victory! Now walk through this arch that has some streamers attached!" It was very sweet to see them be brave about it. They are darling.
