For the record, the reason we are taught about Columbus and not so much Leif Ericson is because Columbus left a much bigger impact on the world than the Viking settlements in Vinland did. Unlike the Vikings, Columbus' settlements lasted and he charted a map so that others could follow him.

I live in Minnesota. Laura Ingalls Wilder passed through here, and the kids I used to babysit took a trip with their Mom and traveled everywhere Laura and her family did. Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and both North & South Dakota. It's very cool.

@alexjrgensen2226

well, there is a difference in miles measures on land and sea. A mile on land, a statute mile, is 5280 feet, a nautical mile is 6076 feet. That is just in the US (you and your silly imperial system), try looking at other parts of the world that used miles in the past en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mile So mayby not that far of. Reason why milk and eggs have protein, they're animal products, they come from animals, which do have protein lol. Pure sugar comes from a plant lol. In elementary school, the only books I remember were Island of the Blue Dolphins (too sad) and Lord of the Flies (I never read this one, but I know kids who did). *Looks at the Texas answer for the 5th grade history* OMG LOL, we won our independence thank you very much lol. We were a US state by the 1850s though lol.

@@MLSoccerox I was a teachers assistant my senior year of high school, I helped go over papers for errors. That was 1989-1990 in Minnesota. Still found spelling errors, and that was 9th-12th grade. Was a smallish city population about 5000, 30 minutes from a major metropolitan area. Definitely not a poor district. Some kids just take longer to catch on, some people never get spelling down. My dad is 80, and he periodically misspells things. He even spelled his dogs name wrong.

She's not entirely wrong. From a Eurocentric standpoint at the time, he discovered the Americas which opened up the path for further exploration by Europeans. Personally he never stepped foot on the mainland, the closest he got was The Bahamas. From the standpoint of the Norse 1000 years ago, they were discovering the continent for the first time. Indigenous people were here all that time. Discovery is subjective. As a kid I discovered fossils in our yard. I didn't know that my brothers had discovered them several years before. Overall, his "discovery" led to a lot of both good and bad things coming to this continent. That's just how progress is a lot of the time.
