In today's paragliding video, we will compare the Advance SUCCESS 5 with it's predecessor and dive deep into the details and secret features of this high-end standard open paragliding harness! We'll also try to answer the question often asked by paraglider pilots: Is this this the best standard open paragliding harness?
Advance: "The SUCCESS 5 appears with a completely revised look and represents the prelude to a new design series. This high-quality Sport harness with maximal safety is directed towards leisure and cross country pilots who are looking for maximum comfort combined with excellent aerodynamics."
Advance SUCCESS 5 info: flybubble.com/advance-success-5
We've flown all of the Advance SUCCESS harnesses, since the original model was released back in 2002!
💺 SUCCESS = 2002
💺💺 SUCCESS 2+ = 2008 (6 years)
💺💺 💺 SUCCESS 3 = 2013 (5 years)
💺 💺 💺 💺 SUCCESS 4 = 2016 (3 years)
💺 💺 💺 💺 💺 SUCCESS 5 = 2021 (5 years)
The SUCCESS 2+ and SUCCESS 3 were big changes from their predecessors, new developments. The SUCCESS 4 and SUCCESS 5 have been more of an evolution from their predecessors, still with significant differences.
ADVANCE was founded in 1988, based in Switzerland, and was soon regarded as one of the world's leading paraglider manufacturers. Over more than 30 years they have earned the reputation of having the highest production standards of any paraglider manufacturer. This is why some paraglider pilots, wanting the best quality money can buy, always look to ADVANCE first - and would only ever consider buying a product from another brand if ADVANCE doesn't produce it. For example, currently, competition wings.

Great video 👍 My first harness was Success 3, and oh… how I miss it’s comfort! I get the absolute feeing how this would be the best open harness if I would choose one today. The seat board, easiness of getting in and out and manoeuvrability with weight shift is amazing with Advance Success 👍 It is also worth to consider open harness if someone is stepping up on a more demanding wing and wants to get used to it in a safe, stable and manoeuvrable harness.

This is an absolutely amazing harness and I appreciate your thorough review (although 18 months ago this would have saved me hours of research🙂). I am a 6’7” pilot and purchased the Success 5 right out of flight school. It is so comfortable, aerodynamic and, most important to me, has top tier protection. Being tall it was hard to really determine if seat board dimensions were going to be long enough, but the Success 5 has great thigh support (I do use a stirrup) and the shoulder straps land exactly in the right spot over my shoulders without any discomfort. Occasionally kiting in this harness can be exactly as Carlo describes! I look forward to many years enjoying this harness and HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend it for anyone!!

Thanks for commenting and sharing your experience, Jared! 👍👍 From our experience I'm sure that most Success 5 owners will feel the same as you do. 🥰 About sizing, another amazing thing we find with Advance harnesses in general is that they fit such a wide range of pilots, despite only having 3 sizes (S, M, L). We often find they fit more pilots than other harnesses, sometimes even ones with more sizes! ✅ However of course we also find that some pilots will find other models suit and fit them better. Like wings and reserves, there's no one 'best' harness for everyone. The best for one might even be the worst for another! 🤔 We know this very well from advising pilots of the right and best gear for them for 30+ years. 🤓 Wishing you many fun flights and happy landings! 🪂

Interesting, thanks for your very thorough review. I’d like to add to the weight shifting authority: I’ve moved from a Wani Light 2 to the Success 5 and was taken aback by the “ABS” system that counteracts your input when reaching a certain angle/weight-shift. It’s obvious when you look at the geometry of the straps; stabilizers going up and down on each side (see at min 10:07). I’d argue for pilots who want that “auto-stabilizer” its OK, but I actually went back after 2 months to the Wani for more control and authority. I just wish manufacturers would allow to adjust the stabilizing straps or have them mounted optionally (way to go - just done by Skywalk on their new RXA3). Just my 2 cents. Hope that’s valuable input.

Thanks Markus 🙏 and thanks for adding to the conversation and sharing your opinion! 👍 Actually, when I explain in this video that (from my testing of very many harnesses over 30+ years) I find the Success 5 is more weight-shifty than some harnesses, but not as much as others, the Wani Light 2 is one of models I had in mind that is more weight-shifty (which I personally like, others won't). Some pilots will prefer the Wani Light 2; others will find it too unstable and prefer the Success 5 (personally I like both, for different reasons). Others may find even the Success 5 a bit too weight-shifty for their taste and prefer something more stable e.g. the Advance Progress 3 or Supair Altirando Lite. Some will prioritise safety and protection above all else; in which case they will much prefer the Success 5 (or other harnesses offering high protection) over the Wani Light 2. Also the Wani Light 2 is a light reversible harness, a very different kind of harness to the Success 5, so really aimed at a different target pilot group. Thanks again for sharing your opinion! 🙂

@markus9666 ps. Thanks for your input, which I think is definitely valuable! 👍 It highlights that what's perfect for some isn't for others - and that's with just one aspect of hte overall package to consider! 🤓

@markus9666 About your wish for manufacturers to allow to adjust the stabilizing straps, or have them mounted optionally: I think that although some might want this e.g. you, from experience most pilots buying this harness would not (I estimate over 95%) and so for most this would just add unwanted complication and clutter to the harness, compromising simplicity and ease of use. I'm sure that the Advance harness R&D team would have considered this possibility, and decided against it. It's clear from the design of the harness that they have opted for simplicity of use over features that only a very small minority of pilots buying this harness might want... and then I suspect that most if not all of those pilots probably want something else anyway. That's how I see it based on my experience anyway! 🤓

@@flybubblecarlo Thanks so much for your helpful and constructive response. Glad you confirm my feel when comparing the Wani and the Success. Also agree that the Success seems to be in the mid-range of stability, and there are others that are even more stable - for sure. Personally I would have liked the safety and protection of the Success, with the agility of the Wani. Oh well, looks like I cannot have it all … :)
@flybubblecarlo
@flybubblecarlo Жыл бұрын
@@markus9666 For sure the Success 5 offers much better protection, I believe. Based on what you've written, the closest to what you want might be the Woody Valley Wani 3, which I've already tested a lot, or the Niviuk Makan, which I've been testing recently and am very impressed with (with their latest harnesses, Niviuk have really upped their game, even giving Advance some real competition in terms of build quality). From my testing so far, the Makan offers a bit more weight shift than than the Success 5. The Wani 3 is more weight shifty, similar to the Wani Light 2 but more robustly built and offering better protection (but not as good as the Success 5 or Makan, IMO).

@@Dynafet Great, hope you love it! The Progress is a really great harness - many pilots love theirs! We've had many happy customers who've bought Progress 3s from us over the years; only a few who found it too stable for their liking (pilots who prefer quite weight shifty harnesses, who like to throw their wings around a bit).

@@nestedacademy From the info you've given it sounds like the Advance Progress 3 could be a prefect harness for you, it has a very calm a reassuring feeling. There's no reason it should dampen your progression in paragliding, it should help. Another similar harness to consider is the Supair Altirando Lite. Another option could be the Supair Evo Lite - which is a standard open harness, not reversible. For reference, you can see all of these harnesses on the Flybubble website: flybubble.com/

@@nestedacademy i sold my Progress 3 due to the pain when groundhandling and that it was rather slow when weightshifting. I did go to the success5 instead. More and better protection and only 1kg heavier My feeling was that i need to be able to play and balance with my harness without any pain to become a good pilot. Many starts i fly on are small and require good ground handling

ps. The main reason we haven't yet managed to produce a video review of the Progress 3 - and many other videos - is down to resource constraints i.e. time and money. Also some luck is involved (weather, other factors outside of our control). As with most harnesses you see listed on our website we've already tested the Progress 3 thoroughly - from when it first came out - and know it very well. ps. In brief, the Advance AXESS 5 is in many ways very similar to the Advance SUCCESS 5. They are very similar to use and fly with. The main differences between the AXESS 5 and SUCCESS 5 are the main protector (Air-Foam Hybrid vs Foam), the seatboard (Polypropylen Honeycomb vs more expensive Carbon), the weight (~ 400 gr), the pack size (a bit smaller as it compresses a bit more), the price (~ 300 GBP) and the colours (which we personally think all look fantastic in the flesh). The SUCCESS 5 also comes with additional lumbar- and pelvis- foam elements, and the price includes the Advance Hook Knife (available as an optional extra for the AXESS 5). Both can be fitted with the optional extra Advance Foot Stirrup, Advance Cockpit Carry flight deck and Advance Radio Holder Top. Full details on both harnesses on our website, including current stock availability (our website shows live current stock info).

I fly a Iota dls with the Advance weightless and the progress 3 and are looking for a new harness for coastal hangs with more protection than my other harnesses. My friend have several Ava Acro t and say they are great with 15cm of protection and good weightshift and comfort. But I like Advance and their quality and the AVA is old…Unfortunately is the possibility for me to test harnesses almost 0%. How lively does the success5 feel compared to Acro T? Or are there another harness i should look at, Supair Acro 4? I think the progress 3 is rather slow in weightshift, it is like holding me back…and want more protection but most important is sporty quick in weightshift..also the groundhandling is awful in the weightless and ”ok” in the progress, it is rather painful… What harness shall I look for any suggestions? It must be comfortable to groundhandle(for the balls), have good Protection and be excellent to weightshift….

My initial feeling is that the success5 is less ”groinsqueezy” than the Progress 3 and the Weightless, i think that the seatboard may be one reason for this, also that the legloops look different on the Success5.

Ok i have now done 2.5h of coastal hang with the success5 harness. Compared to the progress 3 the harness is much and I have to say much more reactive to weightsteering. As Said before, the progress is dampened, when a tandem glider passes you it shakes a little but on the Success5 you feel everything. Comfort, the progress is much more comfortable, the success5 is pretty hard. I also tested the safety when the wind picked up and I could not hold my 27 iota dls, I landed on my ass and I felt very secure. The progress is very good for hike and fly but it is boring to fly I would say compared to the success5
@Parakitedude
@Parakitedude Жыл бұрын
One thing I noticed was that landing with the success5 is so much easier. When approach the landing spot the weightshiftsteering makes small corrections soo easy. Also the glider loose height much more when in landing position. So if i was a student I would pick success5, you Will evolve quicker in that harness

Hey glad you like my old Gin flying suit Manuel 😏 Had this one for some years, saved for cold days. 🤓 Flying suits are no longer the fashion but mine still keeps me very warm and comfortable on very cold days, when others in trendier clothing are complaining about being freezing cold. 😉 Especially nice when standing on the hill in the wind on cold winter days. 😊 Plus they keep the mud (and more) off your clothes. 💩 I'd rather be warm, cosy and clean than 'cool', cold and dirty. 😜 I've never been one to follow fashion. 🙂
