The reason R' U R with left index push feels worse than R U R' with left index push has to do with corner cutting. With the former you have to reverse cut through for the last turn whereas with the latter you don't Same logic applies for left index flick U's and left index eido U2' and the righty versions of this style of turning Interesting theory about regrips hurting lookahead, I personally suspect that regrips aren't as big a factor for bad lookahead when compared to being unconfident and looking at the pair as you solve it (Basically everything I mentioned in my lookahead ramble). That being said everything you say about no regrips aiding lookahead is valid and I think as long as the no regrip way doesn't have an overly obnoxious fingertrick it's probably worth it (Basically any case where you have to reverse cut through a non traditional U style turn is something even I haven't been able to incorporate into my turning fwiw). Good video :)

thanks! i tried regripless f2l for a few days (barring rotations) and some cases seem worth it while the ones that have 2+ or 3+ pushes are noticeably slower and less consistent than regripping. but I also noticed sometimes I regrip for back slot out of habit when it's unnecessary (R' U' R U R' U' R for instance)

This video is excellent. Thanks so much. Never thought about the importance of keeping thumbs in neutral position (on the front of the cube) when doing F2L. Makes complete sense for eliminating regrips and will help a ton when I make this second nature. One question -- does this same advice apply to the cross stage or is it necessary to be more flexible with grip positions? Just curious if there are any "best practices" when it comes to the cross stage and fingertricks?
@JPerm
@JPerm 5 жыл бұрын
thanks! for the cross you just want to have as few regrips and rotations as possible, not necessarily keeping thumbs neutral. the reason it works for f2l is because the cross is solved, so for example all R moves are followed by R' later. for making the cross this is usually not the case

To all the cubers at this level: I assume you’re watching this because you’re feeling like your f2l turning is inefficient and you’re looking for the best technique to use in f2l. If that’s you, listen, if you’re at this stage, you already know all the finger tricks you need. You don’t need to learn more optimal technique, what you have to do is force your brain to start using the more efficient techniques that you’ve already learned in the f2l stage. The best way to go about that is extremely simple, what you need to do is slow down on f2l and consciously focus on avoiding rotations and regrips. Don’t reorient that cube at all. Sometimes in actual solves, obviously you need to rotate or regrip, but for this practice, avoid them entirely. That’s the golden rule here. What this will do is force your brain to apply the finger tricks it already knows to the f2l stage. Don’t worry about being optimal, just practice f2l while avoiding regrips and rotations like the plague, if you do that, you’ll form new pathways in your brain and you’ll start to see what’s optimal and what’s not. It’s like buying a tool set, you won’t need every tool in the set, but now you have a full assortment to choose from and you’ll simply use the ones you need to.

These videos have been super helpful. Would you consider maybe talking about when it is good to start learning algorithms for f2l and what kind of priority that should take over other things like learning Oll algorithms. Just a suggestion, I hope it wasn’t too dumb or rude. Thanks for all the help, I look forward to the next video. Keep up the great work
@JPerm
@JPerm 5 жыл бұрын
I may have mentioned this in the sub-30 video or how to improve f2l video, not sure. but generally 2-look OLL, 2-look PLL, and intuitive f2l all at once. then learn f2l algs very slowly while learning full PLL. keep learning f2l algs while learning full OLL (probably be at least sub-20). then after that keep learning f2l algs but at a slower rate while working on look ahead. OLL can optionally come later since it has a smaller effect on times than any of the other factors
