seen some negative comments. Probably from experienced welders. But most people who come here to watch this video are like me, havent welded a thing in their life. Want to learn from step one, want the basics, the do's and donts. Want to know common problems with beginners. This video explains all that, answered all my questions. When my welder arrives tomorrow, I now feel confident to start doing some test welds. Thank you

This is a class for engineering students and in that context I found videos part 1 and 2 helpful. The instructor is using equipment that a student or home shop welder can afford. I appreciate the fact that he is covering very basic information that a non-welder such as myself can understand. A 27-minute video won't make you a professional welder, but for a beginner with no experience this video fills in a few gaps, whether there are a few technical flaws or not.

Great instructional video. This is so much better than most other "how to" videos. He teaches you about the equipment, safety, techniques, how its supposed to go when done right and also what it looks and sounds like when the welding is not going right. Much appreciated.

This video probably isn't monitored by the original instructor, but a big thank you to him for taking the time show all of us how to get MIG basic spot welds and the more advanced techniques on heat management. I love it; "sizzle of a steak, not pop pop pop!" The over size nozzle did limit him a little, but he still did a great job.

I enjoy all of the comments from the experienced welders. Just remember those who can do, and those who cant teach, and I don't mean to say that by any means to insult this instructor. Yeah so what if he wasn't putting down perfect welds that aren't up to par with your daily welds, He is teaching people with no experience how the welder works, how to set it up, the proper personal protective equipment, and etc.

I love this guy's videos. They have been so informative. Literally, you can take six different videos on welding, combine them into one and they still don't add up to this. Thank you for posting. These videos have really helped me out. Don't mind the other people complaining. I would assume it is just from the jealously and frustration inside of them building up from still getting bad welds, then trying to put you down for THEM making mistakes EVERYONE makes. They simply are not able to take blame.

I have not welded in many years, but I remember this. Your wasting to much time by preheating. Before you do run, spot weld both ends, that will get the temperture up. When you have two odd metals, you lean the tip more towards the thinker or the more dense metal.

Wow. If I ever pulled out a propane torch to preheat a piece where one was heavier than the other, I'd get one warning before I was out the door. I understand if you're a teacher, you're not in the field, so maybe you forgot some things, but let me tell you how to handle that situation: Put more heat on the heavier stock! Aim the nozzle at maybe 60 or 70 degrees favoring the heavier piece. Information like this is slowing the practical learning curve for potential future employees.

You need to have your wire at the front of your puddle to cut into your metal for penetration and buy looking ahead of your nozzle will allow you to see exactly what is going on, allowing a person to read and direct the weld as you are going AND will allow the gas to roll under your puddle to rid a pocket build up of air under the puddle. Everything else you are dead on about and best of luck, keep up the good work!

one thing you may want to mention is the cleaner the metal the easier it is to weld. grind or sand your metal before welding this help a LOT. rusty or panted metal sucks to weld.you can weld painted or rusted metal but it is 2x harder it is easier to grind or sand the metal.

A spot weld is made by a spot welder. When you tack weld another shape to the base metal it is called a tack weld. Because you are temporary welding it in place to be welded. Then you weld it into place.

Your second bead is ok, with the exception of the crater at the end. It is also more important for the machine to cool down after welding than to 'warm up' before welding as the electrical load creates heat within the machine. There really is no 'warm up' period for a welding machine. You can also control the application of heat without pre-heating your peace. Most welders are not looking for the 'roll of dimes' bead with the MIG process, but a 'stitch' bead will create the effect.

Solid core goes back; fluxcore goes forward. That's the rule. When you're welding vertical with solid core, the nozzle points upward, starting from the top, and travels down. When you're welding vertical with fluxcore, the nozzle points up and you travel up, starting from the bottom. There are different ways of travel but as far as how to point the nozzle, that is the directional approach you want to take.

Oh, forgot to say, makes perfect sense to that the cracking would be louder if its a cold weld, since sound waves would reflect off a harder surface easier. A hot weld would have a softer sound since some of the waves dissipate into the molten metal.

I'm surprised by a couple of things. All your good welds had craters. The little hole at the end? This can cause cracking. Also the tube weld that your first weld was cold. I would really have started in the middle then worked to the outside. Thus giving the metal more time to heat before reaching the smaller section of the joint. This is a good vid to teach someone who is wanting to learn welding techniques, I personally wouldn't say advanced though.

@syvo1186 The wire is not copper. It is copper coated steel. If you were welding copper you would weld with copper filler, but not with the MIG process. Copper welding would require DC, electrode negative, TIG welding...As would Titanium, with TI fill rod, Stainless with stainless fill rod, etc. Aluminum and Magnesium require AC TIG as alternating current cleans the material as you weld, but don't try to weld magnesium - once exposed to oxygen it may burn uncontrollably.

im a 1st year boiler maker if i welded like that my boss would kill me, not meaning to pick but its not proper to set the machine up by sound. You can have it sounding right but the wire speed could be too high causing lack of fusion either side of the root. And yea welding is about heat management but mostly preparation.
