In this episode of 'Lessons Learned' I address the problems I've had with my Meade SCT and poor focus. In most cases this is due to poor collimation of the mirrors. Standard (read inexpensive) laser collimation only addresses the secondary mirror and the visual back- completely ignoring the primary mirror and the centering of the secondary mirror on the corrector plate/spider.
The Hotech Advanced SC Collimator is the answer to this problem- using this device, I was able to collimate with precision, lining up the visual back, secondary mirror and centering the secondary mirror on the primary. The result was I was able to improve my focus from a dismal 4.0 HFR to a crisp 2.5.
