Thanks for this video, I just bought a few black Friday waves deals and have some freebies to choose, I started to look at the ratings and this plugin has a bucket load of 5 star reviews, and now I'm confused lol ;D I like lofi and an old analogue desk thingy would probably be quite cool....

Ciao, Great video ! Any other tips about best NLS usage and not reported in its manual ? Did you ever tried the various Console vst for summing by Airwindows ?

I remember having to take care of your cassette tapes, cleaning heads, if you wanted to make a copy use the original but the original would degrade over time also.....crazy life....seems so long ago...

I've been trying to understand this NLS plugin for a while now, because initially I thought it acts like a preamp, which brings me to my question, would this be a good fit if I were to place this as the first insert followed by an EQ (SSL, API etc)? Would it be the right way of doing it?

You can basically put it wherever you like, just watch out for the levels going into the plugin as it tends to distort quite easily. I typically use a pre-amp emulation first followed by this plugin then into a tape saturation plugin for each individual channel. Then I use the 'Bus' version of the NLS on the groups like 'Drums Master' and 'Guitars Master' etc. If the processing gets a bit heavy I tend to dial in the settings that I like and then freeze each channel on Cubase which frees up some CPU power.

VERY COOL. Can we not send tracks to busses and add 1 tape as a sum rather than a tape on every track?

Yes you can do that, but having it on each track multiplies the non-linearity effect. The real limit is dictated by what your CPU can handle.

Do you put the NLS before everything, or after everything?

Nls channel last on the channel Nls bus first on the bus

Good explanation! One question: where a track is routed to a bus, should the bus have the NLS inserted as well as the original track?
@studio1790

You can if you like the sound! This plugin is designed to be a digital solution to the non-linearity of analogue consoles and an analogue console would have non-linearity on every single channel (including the busses). Only thing to keep in mind is the CPU usage as it gets a bit heavy going when you have it on everything. If that becomes an issue I tend to freeze all of my audio tracks to free up some processing power.

Apparently recording and mixing at 96k would solve the problem, however it can be taxing for some computers

How are you able to use so many plugs with out crashing the cpu?

I build a lot of the sound I want on the audio tracks first and then use the freeze function on Cubase to save CPU.

Unfortunatelly, the amount of non-linear summing the plugin does is precisely equal to 0 (it is actually impossible for a plugin to do that without completely replacing your DAW's audio engine). It also introduces 0 channel crosstalk. The only thing it does, is introduce harmonics, acts like a distortion/saturator/color box that has the character of a particular console chanel. And also unfortunatelly, it doesn't have oversampling, so you're going to alias like crazy if you drive it too hard, especially on channels with high frequency content.

You've got a massive amount of channels. I hardly even use more than 10 tracks when creating a song.

i got sent the stems for some tunes a couple of months ago that had 16 tracks just for the drums alone. it depends on what kind of music you're making. there's a reason the old ssl and neve desks had 48 channels. you can fill up 10 tracks just on backing vocals without breaking a sweat. if 10 tracks is all you need to make the music you want to make, then more power to your elbow, it'll certainly make mixing it easier!

In response to your incredibly irresponsible click bait headline, “Digital” already sounds good if you know what you’re doing. In fact digitally encoded music is the reference quality, and your summing mixer is just causing distortion to cover up the mixing slop that has not been resolved. If that’s your thing, go right ahead. Digital is an adjective, not a noun, by the way. When it’s used as a noun, it invariably comes from the mouth of unknowing amateurs.
