Weight is extremely important when It comes to adventure riding. The lighter the bike and luggage the better the whole experience will be. In this video I explain the importance of this and weigh my Suzuki DRZ to see how heavy the entire setup is, how much weight I've added to the bike and compare it with some other popular adventure bikes.

Just stumbled across your channel, subscribed and will check out a few of your trips. Good yarn about weight. As I get older it's a major point for me. Currently on a 501, fully fuelled big tank, camp gear, a days food, 3l water, large gps, tools etc etc, ready to ride at 146kg, and loving it !

I was 100% set on buying a tenere 700, but after sitting on it at the shop I changed my mind. It's a street bike. I'm coming from riding dirtbikes my whole life, not street. DRZ is a real off-road bike.

Yea 100% mate. The Tenere is capable in the right hands but for the average rider it’s a big old thing to throw around in the bush.

If you have the money for a T7 did you consider the Aprilia Tuareg 660? Slightly lighter than the t7 but almost every review says its not as top heavy. DRZ is a good rig but if your going to cover big km it takes a few mods.

@@brigalowadventureco.9184 i'm not sure where you're from but do you realize there's drz's covering huge distances all over australia every day. i've done a 7000km trip and 850km days on mine. the difference between a drz and a toureg is you can actually ride a drz across the simpson desert or up to cape york through the hard tracks without a heap of drama.

@@6226superhurricane Im well aware of the drz400 - its been around for 24 years and ive owned both a drz 250 and a drz400. I only asked old mate who commented about the T7 being heavy if he considered an AT660 given his original interest in the T7 and i believe the AT660 is probably the only true competitor to the T7. The DRZ400 is a good hardie simple bike. I would of kept mine except the close gear ratio, oil tank - pump/s, vibration, high rpm, poor seat, no thermo fan and pannier mounting points made it less than ideal for my style of riding - gazetted roads and outback riding. On the odd occasion i wish i still had the 400 as im sure Josh still wishes he had the t7 now and then. In reality a good rider could take a DRZ400 or an AT660 through the desert.

It's weird tho, cause there's plenty of people out there that think the drz is a pig and weighs too much. Everyone's version of the perfect adventure bike seems to vary dramatically.

Great content mate keep at it 👏🏼 I’ve been on the road now for 25 months on a DR650 (professional house sitting as well) My luggage weight with water,oil & food is 40 kilos. Heavy but that’s been home for 2 years so lots of tools & spares. Plenty of soft sand, corrugations and water crossings in that time with minimal trouble. Great fun

I haven’t weighed my DRZ but my DR 650 weighs 180 Kg with no luggage and my T7 weighed 220 Kg, both bikes had a full tank and my luggage weighs about 22 Kg. Once you add bashplates, racks and what ever else the weight soon goes up but you have to balance weight with protection and durability, light is great but if if it compromises durability then it is a false economy. An enduro bike is a good idea in theory, like a KTM 500 but the rear subframe is not designed to carry any weight so would have more chance of snapping, even heavier bikes have issues with subframes snapping so you have to be careful of the weight, 15- 20 Kg is a good target to aim for with luggage, less is better but it all depends on where and how you ride, a 2 or 3 day ride is different to a 2 or 6 month adventure because the equipment you use has to be sturdier, which means heavier. A light weight tent is great for shorter trips but to use one every day or 2 for prolonged periods it will suffer, same goes for sleeping bags and other items used frequently, then you have to add in the cost factor. Lots of compromises.😊

Not so keen on the gpx files as Im in WA but I have a drz that I want to kit out similiar to how you have yours setup. A sweet list of everything you go camping with best and best places to buy would be awesome. Should also tie the list into amazon etc for the parts so you get affiliate paymemts. Love the channel and loved watching the cape york trip.

Hi Josh, great vid mate and an area of ADV bikes I have always focused on. The lighter the bike the more fun I have. Nerb1 did a great vid on this a couple of years ago giving the weight and what I called the lean value. I've done vids on the Beta 480, KTM 690, Yamaha XT660Z, DR650 and my current bike the PR7 with wet weight with 300 KMs range. Something manufacturers should detall more in my opinion. I personally love to know the kerb weight of a bike before I even consider it. Anyway great to see someone else talking about the elephant in the room Regards Steve

Mate 20kgs including all my food and 1l of oil. Plus I know for a fact I carry 3-4kgs just in tools. Overkill I know, but it’s all I know.

My adventure set up (for offroad riding) is a KTM EXC 250 2 stroke. Fully fueled with my camping gear is coming in at very most 120kg. For me camping off the bike is about riding normally but for a few days in a row, and since I ride solo its important to be able to handle the bike properly. Edit: I'm overhauling my luggage when I get to Spain (currently in Morocco) and total luggage weight will be around 7kg. Currently around 5kg but no panniers so thats where the weight will come from.

Very interesting mate ! I sold my T7 World Raid to go back to a little DRZ 400 as well, I had one 15 years ago and I have always promised myself that I will buy another one some day. Best decision I have ever made ! I feel 10 times more confident riding the DRZ offroad compare to the T7. Now all of my riding buddies want to get a DRZ :)

That weight isn't bad mate! My last 3week trip, my klx450 fully loaded was 162kgs. I think the only difference is you have more fuel than me 😂 interesting how similar the results. I've been wanting a T7 for two years now havnt been able to justify the heavier bike.. 😅 duel sports are bit of a Swiss army knife in my opinion. Great vlog joshy !

I think my 1996 DR650 weighs less fully loaded with all my camping gear than a T7 weighs empty. I had myself convinced to upgrade to the T7 until I sat on one in the dealers showroom, so top heavy! I just can’t see myself handling that much weight on the trail so I guess I’m keeping my DR..

Agree. Have one of the most modified DRZ's out there. But picking it up is always a pain in the back. As when it falls over, its flat on the ground and most times rear wheel is off the ground..makes it feel a lot heavier than it is. At times I have to offload all my luggage to lift it up.

I had 3 DRZ400, CRF300 Rally is better in general (6 speeds instead of 5, Injection, better fuel range 375km, fuel gage, seat comfort, ABS, USB option, Wind shield) Only less HP. (CRF300 Rally but 500-600cc would be THE unicorn bike) But I still recommend a DRZ400!

My first "adventure" bike was a DRZ 400SM that I added dirt wheels to. I miss having that light weight off road. On American highways, not so much. I then went the exact oposite direction with a Tenere 1200. Great road tourer and gravel road bike, but too heavy when I took it places I shouldn't have. My current T7 is the best compromise IMO. Great on dirt, and doesn't completely suck on those inevitable highway slogs.

I’m getting up there (mid fifties) and wanted a bike I could use to get back in the trails. I started looking at the bikes that were available. After searching I settled on the Ktm 690 enduro r. It’s got plenty of power for on and off-road and the suspension is pretty good too. Now with 10+ thousand miles I still get a grin whenever I throw a leg over it. With regular maintenance it’s been very reliable and I have no regrets on choosing the 690

The husky’s 701 is the way to go if u looking for more power, I upgraded from a 400e too, 60k so far the husky is holding up very well, newer bikes don’t have that notorious rocker arm problem, but do need a bit of work to make em more reliable. For trips less than 2 days, I happily travel w my fe350, even with single person camping gear it still feels like a dirtbike.

nice josh 👍 interesting, i wonder if the lightweight ktm and husky would perform as well as the drz in the dirt with the luggage on 🤔 the drz is defo a tractor, but it's less fragile and precious that the lighter pricier bikes? ❤ the drz 🤘

With the right suspension I'm sure they would. Unsure of their subframe strength for luggage carrying but hopefully I can try one out someday.

Hi Josh, love the channel. I was just wondering. if the bike is on it's side, the weight would be different from what you just weighed wouldn't it, as you have the advantage of leverage lifting from the handle bars and the lean angle of the bike when it's in the down position ..have you thought of weighing 'the bike by putting the handlebars on the scales when it's lying over with luggage on ? it would be an interesting comparison ..keep up the great content! 🙏

Thanks mate I agree I think it would be a different weight because it would be spread between 3 points, both tyres and the side of the handle bar that is being lifted up. But I think it would be cool to test it and see how much of a difference it actually is. Thanks for the suggestion 👍🏼👍🏼

What are you doing for spring rates fully loaded? Just spring for full weight or compromise with unloaded?

Those stock mirror weigh a ton compared to some other options. And because they are so far out from the pivot, it slows down the bar turn as well. Take them off and check it out.

The KTM500 handles like a dream over the DRZ mate, especially in the sand - it's actually really enjoyable!! If you're thinking of it, I can't see you regretting it (I haven't ridden mine loaded up though)

To be honest I’d probably rather the husky 🤷🏼‍♂️😂 But yea I don’t think I’d regret it. For the really big adventures though I think the DRZ would win for reliability and knocking over the bigger distances. But maybe one day I’ll get to give one a go!

suprising how much the weight goes up over stock, but i suppose there's 8 or 9kg in the tank and fuel alone. then you add racks, heavier tubes and tyres plus other bits and bobs. so i guess you could expect to put that extra weight onto most bikes straight away.

Comparing dry weight is the way to go... Since weight of fuel n oil is standard ....hard to compare a bike wet that Carry's 2.5 gallons vs say the Kove that holds 8 gallons

Soo do you know what the gvm or carry capacity is for the bike? Say your 80kg plus the 37kg of gear weight and mods, that makes the bike 257kg out on the trails. Quarter of a ton sounds heave for a bike, but mine almost weighs that wet without gear so I probably won’t find a set of scales strong enough to park it on. Great vid man, thanks for the info

unilkely you'll exceed the weight capacity, the drz400s has the same suspension and the same subframe as aus e model and the s model can carry a pillion. if your gear weighs as much as an extra person you have too much gear.

@@6226superhurricane oh didn’t know they were a two seater. I guess if your two up with all the gear on you’ll be in trouble. But I see a lot with broken rear frames above the tyre from saddle bags. But I think that’s a case more of them bouncing in the rough stuff than the weight.

@@budget-adventure well the e model isn't a two seater but apart from not having pillion pegs there's no difference to the s model which is two seater in regards to anything to do with carrying weight. you do see the occasional drz with a cracked subframe but like you said it's mostly due to gear not being secured and acting like a sledgehammer.

When I look at my DR650, and your DR-Z. I see two incredibly well engineered solid machines that weigh 160/140kg respectively. How on earth do these euro manufactures shave so much weight off their bikes, I know they use all the tricks to get the stated weight as low as possible, but they are still shaving every gram of every component they can. It's just something that doesn't sit well with me.

Ya gotta take into account the rider weight as well, then you have total weight. With that number you can also accurately calculate power to weight ratio. Would have been good to include the XR600 in your video, 146kg wet

Yea I know mate. It just wouldn’t be an easy comparison to do with other people and their bikes. Easier to just compare the bikes themselves. Would love to have an XR in the shed !

Sorry bro. “Doodle on a motorcycle” told me that no bike is too heavy and that every 5’3 female should ride a GS 1250 or a Tiger 900. And don’t listen to anyone when they say your bike is too heavy! They just don’t know what they are talking about. If you drop your bike in a parking lot, just as for help from strangers to pick it up. And don’t ever ride remotely by yourself. Thats what doodle says to do. She said us “Joe Blows” in the comment section don’t actually ride and we don’t know anything and no bike is too heavy! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😅🤣

I don't know why anyone would want a LEAD SLED adventure bike ? These tanks are absolutely no fun at all to ride unless your going in a straight line on hard pack dirt or asphalt. I once owned a 1975 HONDA XL-350 and thought hell I'll used it as a dirt bike too on occasions . Only took me one lap around a hare scramble track to quickly realize this thing sucks due to it heavyweight and it being physically exhausting to ride it on a track FOR REAL DIRT BIKES NO THANKS 😂

Being in the 60"s now, lightness is everything. I'm also a 500 EXC guy, big tank, fully loaded [ I'm also ultra lightweight with the gear I carry ] is less than 140 kilo's. I drop it, I laugh, oh so casually pick it up and carry on. It is the way......the issue is that too many riders have come to accept these 250kg bikes as "normal" somehow..Their loss
