I lost 35 lbs and my adventure jacket was way too big. So I got a new smaller jacket, and now that I’m riding more and more off-road I took the old jacket, removed it’s armor, and I use it now as a shell over the body armor suit until I get to the trail. Works awesome!! All the benefits of an ADV jacket, water proof, and more armored than it was originally! I can roll it up super easy and while it is still big-ish, and it is weight, it seems worth it. I bet with a compression sack it could be really great.

Although my plan is to get off-road at some point in the future, I've just made the switch in this direction. Just purchased a body armour jacket and I have a number of over-jackets, all big enough to go over the protection jacket, and each offers a different level of weather protection. Living in Texas, it sucks to wear a heavy jacket, so I'm hoping this is going to be a good mix. I do ride a large capacity Adv bike anyway, but I'm sure my cruiser buddies will have a laugh seeing my protection jacket - I don't care, this setup makes a lot of sense and I don't worry about impact pads in pockets inside my jackets that rarely sit in the right place to provide the protection they're supposed to.

Great video. Lots of very good points!. I'm a fan of the adv gear myself, but like you say it does lack airflow at the lower speeds....you need to be moving. So I've started buying some of the mesh adv gear from rev-it, it has its downfalls when it comes to rain but that's easily overcome with their brightly colored rain jacket (or even just a plain old north face rain coat) worn over it, ultra packable. This gives me the full protection of adv gear with the airflow of wearing almost nothing...but requires stopping to add a waterproof layer if rain starts. The only time I don't wear armor at all is on my 2km ride to work and back.

Thank you for this. My new 890 isn’t here yet so adv riding is brand new to me. On the other hand dirt biking is what I know. I’m 55 and just had a partial knee replacement. I won’t ride a bike again without braces on even if it’s a Harley. I’m a retired fire Captain paramedic. Ain’t no klim pant gonna save your knees in a bad MC crash when your knee goes the wrong way. Also, there is no better foot/ankle protection than the Gaerne SG 12 boot. Waterproof socks are recommended but even the sidis don’t have matched toe box protection. I really like your channel and look forward to a new chapter of riding in my life

It is always a dilemma. My BMW suit opens up and allows good airflow. I’ve used in high 30’s with no issues (just have to keep hydration up and suit has a built in bladder to ensure that). I did think about getting a MX shirt with under armour but it’s more gear to carry about and, as you say, no good for wet/cold weather. I rarely do single track and mostly asphalt and dirt roads so BMW gear suits me fine.

Many dirt bike boots aren’t waterproof, but anecdotally I’ve yet to have my feet get wet in short rides with my Sidi X-3 Enduro boots in pretty steady rain, even though they’re not “waterproof. Waterproof socks are readily available and cheaply replaceable instead of replacing the boots altogether; additionally non-membraned boots breathe better and dry quicker when/if they do get really wet.

i hear it so often; "dress for slide not the ride" but i'm over it. ive been riding enduro and motocross for 15 years. i'm not doing sport bike-esque turn on the pavement. its probably been 10 years since i fell off my bike in non technical terrain and it was in a downhill turn on a slimy clay road. u dont have to take roads that 60mph+. i honestly think the industry pushes all this overpriced gear on us.

I have the same two boots as you, Sidi Crossfire 2 and Sidi Adv. I've stopped wearing the Sidi Crossfire's simply because I've got zero feel with them on the shifter and rear brake pedal. I'd rather avoid the crash in the first place because I can feel the controls. On the dirt bike vs Adv gear, that's a really hard choice here in Colorado, because in the morning at elevation, it's freaking freezing out, then it turns into an oven by mid afternoon. I've just resigned myself to being hot later in the day at slow speeds and wear the Klim Badlands. I'd love to wear the dirt bike stuff but I know I'd be a popsicle the entire morning, especially up on the higher passes

Same with me. My very first trip, all packed up, headed out to the desert for the Mosko Moto wknd riding event, and I got on the interstate, and my toe was riding the brake (brand new bike with 700 miles on it) and I dind't know it. Ended up burning up the rotor, and pads and missed the event and cost me $1400 at the dealership. I"m an idiot evidently. Not exactly sure what to do now. (Gaerne Fastback boots)

Is there a shell that has slide resistance? That way you could wear the off-road armor and have the slidable shell on the road, and then pack the shell when you hit the trail.
@martinfoster5163
@martinfoster5163 3 жыл бұрын
I test impact abrasion / slide resistance on asphalt. Hard plastic is very resistant to abrasion. I got some basic pads for $4 with plastic shells online from China. They handled 3 impacts and 3 slides for a total distance of about 50 metres (60 yards) until I judged them not reusable. I'm going to test some Dainese hard shell armour soon. All drops were from 1 metre (39") and a 6kg (13lbs) weight. So, I'd say yes. Any plastic of at least 2-3mm thickness will handle impacts and slides very well. Furthermore, soft foam pads are extremely abrasion resistant too. A d3o LP2 pad (14mm thick) lasted one impact and 110m of slide, at which point it folded and was pulled out of the pocket. There was still 40% of the thickness left. I did the same test with a SAS-TEC 14mm thick pad and it lasted 180m of slide until it had a hole. Interestingly, pads can handle much more abrasion and impact than the fabrics that hold them. So it looks like it's a better idea to put them on the outside. They'll save the much more expensive jacket or pants, but only in the impact zones and maybe a little extra.
@mike.thomas
@mike.thomas 2 жыл бұрын
Late response, but I can add that the Klim Dakar jacket is pretty close to what you’re suggesting. It comes without pads (but has pockets for them). It is really designed as the over layer for an off-road jersey/armor setup. I use it either directly over an armored shirt, or with armored shirt and jersey underneath. It’s very versatile. If the day starts cold you can keep it on over your jersey and armor, and zip off the sleeves as the temperature goes up (there’s a “duck pocket” for the sleeves and whatever in the back). So far I’ve just pulled it off and stuffed it into my tail bag or hydration backpack when I go off pavement. It’s very light and flexible, but appears it would have pretty good abrasion resistance on pavement. As the other reply says, if you have good armor on, you’ll get some abrasion resistance from that where there is coverage.

DOT approved helmets are not good helmets if that is all they have. Snell is better, but there are other ratings for other levels of protection that really, really make a difference in and impact, or prevent your head from getting twisted badly in a crash (get those silly camera's and communicators off your helmets you silly man). But a DOT approval means nothing. It isn't much more than a bicycle helmet.
