Complete off road desert scenic drive on Potash Road 32 miles to Moab in southeast Utah. We begin in Canyonlands National Park down in the canyon where Shafer Canyon Road ends and Potash Road begins and head along the Colorado River and past the potash evaporation ponds until the road becomes paved and winds along the river to Moab.
We drove Potash Road in a stock Audi Q5 SUV with all wheel drive. All wheel drive/4x4 is definitely recommended for this road, as is decent ground clearance. Our aftermarket tow hitch scraped a little bit one time, otherwise our car handled the road fine as we took it slow and easy.
Note: The audio in this drive was adjusted to reduce the wind noise as it was very windy in some areas.

My buddy and I arrived in Moab on day 6 of our 10 day adventure bike ride. It was late October this year a week before it turned cold. We left Arches NP and turned down Potash Rd. I thought I died and went to heaven. Unfortunately, I was out of gas down by the power plant and we never turned onto dirt. Thanks for sharing what I missed!!!

Mountain biked this WAY back in the mid 90s. Rode along the White Rim trail, then down Shafer which is just stunning. Then left under Dead Horse Point to Potash road and up into Moab. Nearly killed me. Brutal ride, way longer than we were expecting. But absolutely beautiful.

I unexpectedly drove this very road. After camping overnight in Canyonlands, on the way out of the park, the next morning, I saw Shafer Canyon Rd road and decided to drive it down into the canyon, and then I just kept going all the way to Moab. It ranks as one of my favorite times ever in a National Park. We were also in a stock SUV, and we only saw 1 or 2 other cars on the road that day.

Just like the comments I left for your Canyonlands NP vid a couple of weeks ago, once again I was in awe at the rock color and I am eagerly awaiting the day I can get back out there because I want to do the White Rim Trail as well as go thru Pucker Pass. In your opening seconds (and repeated again at the 2:25 mark), it took me about three seconds to remember that site. Too many positives about that experience to mention here but one if not probably the only negative I recall was the condition of the road, with that underlying road I had to slow down to 5 MPH or so unless I liked banging my head into the door jam. There were several locations like this once getting past the switchbacks coming down but the worse one I recall started at the 11:25 mark for several minutes. Should I drive this again, I believe I'll wear a bike helmet until I get to the potash ponds. Once again, great video !

no need for a 4x4 in this trail. suitable even for a small city car like fiesta, i20, even a smart car. been far more challenging roads in my first car fiesta diesel manual and my current i20 1.2 petrol manual. look like it easy but very pretty drive. so far up to the 59:30 mark ive seen nothing what would concern me, even at that point a few rocks in the ruts to make them less deep still feel that passable. i got bad health so my city car will go off road as i want to get as close as i can to planned place to take few images and places my car been most rangerovers in the city done nothing of the sort even tho they can. pick you lines and read the road well you be amazed places you can get to and so far never had any damage, only thing to keep in mind if you going to go on to three wheels then you need just enough not to much to get drive tires back on the ground both them as no locking diff, some the climbs a little more speed and give enough gas balancing between grip and slip. loads fun taking a car to places it never designed for but they can do quite well if you read the road right and choose correct lines you get pretty far out.

We certainly don't recommend anyone attempt this in a normal car, especially one without 4x4. The park rangers don't recommend it either. Shafer Canyon Road, yes, but not Potash Road. Maybe you can force a normal car through the trail, but you're risking severe damage to your car. Getting towed out will cost at least $1,500, not to mention there's little to no cell signal to even call a wrecker. The tow hitch on our Audi Q5 SUV bottomed out and scraped twice along this trail, and that was with an experienced spotter and carefully picking our lines in difficult areas. Bad idea for most tourists.

I always get really nervous when I'm driving along the bottom of a cliff face with huge rocks that are perched precariously above you.

Are these fireroads open to public? Do you need special permit to drive on these roads?
