For sound, just select "Roland MT-32 Emulation" or "Roland CM-32L Emulation" instead of "FluidSynth", no need to even click Configure or find a soundfont. Many soundfonts try to emulate the Roland sound anyway.

Maybe a nitpick but you mentioned "virtualization" and "VM" which is not what 86Box does. 86Box does low level emulation of old PC hardware in software. Virtualization uses a hardware feature of modern CPUs to allow you to run guest OSs at near native speed. 86Box's approach is going to be slower than virtualization but is more accurate at emulating old hardware which virtualization does not attempt to do.

Windows 98 is now 23 years old, but you can't just download a self-contained, ready to use Win98 emulator because copyrights now last a ridiculously long time and prevent people from making use of obsolete software that the company will NEVER make another cent from and in fact, wants nothing more to do with. Copyrights, stopping innovation and keeping useful works out of the hands of people who want them.

Hello from Austria! Kinda like Australia but without the kangaroos! Thank you very much for your very good guide on the 86Box configuration and also the detailed setup of Win98. My daughter (now 12) found an old game from my youth in the now abandoned room of me and my sister in my parents house, when we were visiting there for easter. I told her of me growing up with DOS and Win95 and 98, playing games that now would look horrible or at least weird to her, but she found it interesting and that motivated me to try and get some form of Win9x running again on my Win10. First tried it with VirtualBox, no luck there, but with your guide I was able to stitch together and recall all my memories of endless hours installing and deinstalling, fixing and patching, building computers, upgrading and finaly moving on to win2000 and XP. So i didn't remember the last part with all the patches, because I never kept my computers long enough to end up with Win98 needing this ... :) But it was a very thorough timetravel for me, best start for me, when I knew your video would be very much worth to watch, was when you instantly pulled out the old trick with copying the CAB files first onto the hard disk. Thumbs up!

I recommend choosing VooDoo 3 3000 drivers when installing windows 98 because that driver is sooo powerful, It can display Windows 98 at 1920x1080 with true color mode

I got ""Bad command or filename" at 17:34 and I had to change to D: then cd WIN98 then run format c: /s. Then at 18:11 or so my drives were all 1 letter off. So really it's just that the CD was on D: for me.

When I tried the config with the video of S3 Trio for 2D and Voodoo 2 for 3D the DirectX tests failed. So I switched settings Display>Video from S3 Trio to PCI 3DFX Voodoo3 3000 with default settings. Installed the Voodoo 3 drivers from philscomputerlabs and now DirectX tests works. Another benefit is that the laggy mouse input is now much smoother.

I didn't configure my vm exactly the way you did but I chose the same Machine (socket 5,Intel Adv Zip 200mhz) and I have my win98se running smoothly. I had first used the Miscelanous, Ms Virtual PII 333mhz and strangely enough it was very slow. I also found how to activate the Mouse wheel in winbox with this tuto. Thank you very much

Using the Biostar MB8600 matches what your doing except I had to make the bios recognize my drive in the advance setup. It didn't find it automatically not sure why but now I can do the format C/S thing.

Brilliant tutorial! I now have an issue with full-screen mode. When in full screen, why should my mouse interpret a double-click as a "right-click-properties" action. For example, if I double click an icon or folder, I get the properties of that icon or folder. I have tried different mouse emulations, etc. I didn't get this with PCEM, but I totally prefer 86box otherwise.

Fantastic guide! The install went well with no issues. The only problem I have is the mouse input is very laggy on my end whereas it looks quite snappy and responsive in your video. I'm not sure what could be causing this. I have a steady 100% emulation displaying in the top bar at all times.

I ran through this tutorial and everything seemed to run fine (I did run into a few of the different drive names that a few in the comments seemed to hit) but I was able to complete the full install and patching. I got up the part of running the 3dmark software and it said my hardware isn't compatible. It seems to be an issue with the voodoo2 install/setup. If I go into display properties the voodoo2 only lets me select a max resolution of 640x400, and if I go into the Device Manager > Voodoo2 card, on the driver page it says "No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device." I've tried reinstalling a few times and it doesn't seem to do anything. It's like the Voodoo2 driver just isn't installing at all. Anyone run into something like this?

Hi thanks for this all worked out nicely, I just have on query how do I put my old cd games for example Ultima Ascension into windows 98 as it doesn't detect my real dvd drive and can only put iso file images into the virtual cd rom drive just not sure how to do it. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

I believe the Window 98 SE can install CD can format the hard disk without the need for the MS-DOS prompt.

Thanks for the guide, I found two issues though. 1. When copying the installer one it doesnt make a copy of the image file, and when I copy and paste it this doesnt seem to work. 2. The 3D Mark thing doesnt work, and it lists like 5 possible causes why.

Is there a way to resize the hard disk (the img file) after you already have your PC working and also to keep Windows 98 and everything already installed on it?

I could not get it to boot into windows to continue the install after the cloning step. I had to eject the floppy drive. I think this is a missing step. It also wasn't clear how you had a different image file for the cloned machine. I copy/pasted the original file into the vm folder for the new machine and selected that. It seemed like you may have done that and left the step out? One other difference is my CD boot with the full retail CD always had 3 options, Boot into setup, Boot with CD support, Boot without CD support. I ignored the first option following this guide.

nice tutorial :) i am playing king's quest 8 in win98 which i installed in 86box. i have a problem. the audio in the game has a low volume. i set the volume level in win98, my laptop and the game to max volume and the volume is still low. what do i do?

Just a heads up, that boot floppy from the recommended site does not have format in it. I had to go to a PCem install of w98se that I have to make it right. I wrote all this out in a longer paragraph with more detailed info but something in it wasn't liked by the powers that be and it got deleted or never accepted (and it wasn't a URL). EDIT I just checked and format is on both the full retail (non bootable) and oem (bootable) versions of w98se CDs but that doesn't mean you can pull it off of either of them because the driver for the cd rom might not have loaded when you're trying to format the newly created C drive (you might not have access at that point in time). (google's your friend). I originally grabbed a 95 osr2 boot floppy to get format but then when I plugged in three different 98se keys, it wouldn't accept them. So I'm going to have to delete a lot of things before I try all over again with the boot disk that has format. I don't know how our good host here got it to work w/o format on the floppy. Maybe his grabbed it off the CD but then that begs the question, why didn't mine? EDIT2 Next day got it all working and I found out why the pair of 98se listed keys don't work - on that webpage, in the comments, the key for the non-bootable full retail begins with K4HVD and someone else verified it (just search ctrl+f)

when I managed to start the vm, the manager keeps on poping out an error saying cannot find 86box.exe, although 86box.exe is already in the 86box manager folder.How can I get rid of this error?

At 17:10, everytime I follow that format, it doesn't work. It says it's invalid or bad name. What exactly does that c: represent? My c: on my laptop is actually my main internal SSD. The drive I've installed the 86box files and win98 disk is drive H:, so would I use "format H: /s" instead?

At 25:11 it says different things on my started clone machine. For me it's missing the "ATAPI Device Installed" part and after "Floppy A: Installed" it says "NVRAM Checksum Error, NVRAM Cleared". After this error it gives me the option to go into Setup (F1) or to Boot (ESC). It's impossible to Boot (ESC) so my only option is Setup (F1). What do I do here? When I go to Setup it takes me back to the part where we chose "Setup Win98 with support CD (etc)". Please share the solution, someone. I would really like to get this to work. I have been able to work around all the other problems I've had with this tutorial, but this is the first one that I can't do anything with.

I've tried a few versions of 86box but I always get better performance from pcem v17, don't know why and the mouse is always more laggy in 86box, even using the same 'config/machine'.

Yo installed HDD on the same IDE channel as CD-ROM drive so if emulation is accurate the hdd will be ass slow as your cd-rom drive.

Thanks great demo, just one point on the win98 boot disk i downloaded first from your link did not have the "format command", checked again and yes more than one version, just a pointer if people can not use the command "format c: /s", its the incorrect boot disk.

Good tutorial, but nothing new for me, except for the autopatcher thingy which i dont normally use. I simply try to install my games and if one fails, i install the dependency that the game requires, such as directX 6/7/8, setup msi fixes, etc. Also you should note that, 86Box is really slow because it is more accurate than other emulators. With my 7950X, running a AMD K6 III+ with 450 MHz in 86Box is not possible, getting only 50-70% emulation when under load. With PCem its no problem, its always 100% or in worst case 95% under heavy load - but with a voodoo 3 PCI instead of AGP.

It would be cool if input wouldn't flake out within a few minutes in a game. Its a known bug that's not really being dealt with until version 3.5 or so. Its currently 3.11. It would be neat to play old school Diablo like it should. But right now its not to be.

So I ran into a problem where the CD drive is not showing up, I followed this guide to the letter T but when I boot into windows 98 its only showing the floppy drive.

The only flaw is that 86Box emulation is slow by 40%, probably due to a hardware limitation with my pc, i have an Intel core i3 4th generation.

20:15 haha in almost all of these OS install videos, you people are hiding your CD keys as if it matters. Just give people a CD key so they don't need to do the work of finding one themselves. I gave a link to the ISO and the cdkey in my recent Windows 2000 video. Why not just DELIVER?

If you have a not so performant computer i would rather go the Dosbox->Windows 98 route because Box86 is pure emulation. Your host might be too slow for Win 98. Dosbox is much more performant.

Right to get past 17:20 since the boot floppy doesnt have a format program you just need a floppy with this, so i used the googles and got an img called "Windows98_SE_No_Ramdrive" from "allbootdisks" mounted that floppy then used the format command then once completed popped the proper win98 boot floppy back in and got on with the rest... ill update this post if i encounter additional problems.... Edit - they keys do not work! so off to google and let me tell you finding a working key was a mission! the website on this video no longer exsists so i ended up findin one on reddit ... working_windows_98_se_retail_full_product_key - highlight and search google - in the thread you want the key above - NO WAY BRO THANKSSSS! IT WORKED! Next thing, the driver CD... directory is not the same as the video, but its found easily in the drivers folder Finally, the auto patcher went right to the end but somthing happened and 86box crashed - i wasnt looking so the patcher never got to the end screen, im giving up for another day, hope this helps someone tho
