The Adventures in Kansai series is a collaboration between Where Next Japan and Kansai Scene on travel and culture within the Kansai region.
Kansai Scene, and Celia Polkinghorne, presents an interview Ariya Sasaki, a young priestess of the Pureland sect of Buddhism.
While female priestess were almost unheard of a generation ago, Ariya is determined to follow this path, and build a space for the community within her temple.

Her going and praying for the deceased at homes, making a spiritually pallative house-call. That's really kind from a personal and spiritual aspect.

I think it's an important part of community that is vanishing everywhere. There are a lot of elderly in Japan, who, I'm sure, benefit from a regular meeting with someone.

Any chance you guys could help me get in touch with this young lady? i am new to jodo shinshu and since she is an english speaking temple head, in kyoto i'd love to pick her brain as to the japanese take on this beautiful sect of pure land.

Hey kenneth, thanks for posting this question. I am from India where actual roots of pure land can be found. Just like you I am so much impressed by the basic and the detailed teachings of pure land Buddhism particularly the Jodo Shinshu Sect. Scent of jodo Shinshu is spreading far and wide.

I'm not sure how many young Japanese people follow Pureland. In general, Buddhism is dropping amongst young people here.

Eating meat is not a buddhist practice. “Ahimsa” (non violence)is a basic Buddhist precept

Buddhism as a whole is neither vegetarian nor non-vegetarian. Even the current Dalai Lama eats meat. And Shin Buddhism, the tradition this preistess was born into, was founded in part so as to be inclusive of people whose professions-- such as samurai and butchers and fishmongers-- would otherwise preclude their enlightenment.
