Rarely seen owls are the highlight of this edition of Shooting with Sparky. Sparky makes a journey to see the last Minnesota owl that he has not photographed...the Long-eared Owl. And then it is on to the Armstrong Wetlands in southern Minnesota where up to a half dozen Short-eared Owls have been hunting. A bonus is a flock of elusive Gray Partridge. Sparky returns a week later to photograph Long-eared Owls in flight.

The Short-eared Owl seems to be a nice bird to observe as it hunts over open fields and prairies. They have long wings for an owl their size.

It certainly is! And you are right, they do have long wings for flying slowly and hunting in open areas.

Loved the video. It makes me want to find some owls. Those long-eared owls were particularly interesting. I've only ever seen one that I chanced upon while road cruising for snakes at night. Thanks for sharing.

I watch your videos closely looking for new places to explore in MN. Your timing was perfect on this one... I am passing through the Owatonna area next week! Have changed my trip around so I have an evening free to hunt for a short-eared owl (lifer for me)! Hope I still have a chance at seeing one, I know your visit was actually in January. Please keep the videos coming!!

Thanks Kelly! Lots to explore in Minnesota! I think folks were still seeing SEOWs at the Armstrong Wetlands east of Owatanna recently. Good luck! Dusk is best (3pm to dark).

Hi Kevin. Have a great trip! The owls were at a suburban park in Minneapolis. Their winter roosts are very ephemeral so I doubt they will be there again. You could watch the Minnesota birding Facebook group for photos… Sometimes they list locations.

Lovely - Just curious, what gets priority when you're out on a trip, Video or Stills?

Hi Keith… Very good question! That is one of the most difficult things when on the Birding/bird photographer trips. I really try and prioritize photos but after getting a few shots, I will shoot some video clips and then go back to photography and then back to video if the bird lingers. Of course this is reversed. If there’s some very cool behavior going on… Then I will shoot video first. I am sure that because I’m not specializing in one of the or the other both forms suffer.
