In this video "ADVICE FOR BEGINNERS ROLLER SKATING AT THE SKATEPARK FOR THE FIRST TIME!" I give new skaters advice about skating at the skate park by providing a checklist of skills to learn. These skills were chosen specifically to give new skaters confidence before going to the skate park. This video idea came from the comments!
This video begins with advice about wearing your gear! Wear a helmet, wrist guards, knee pads and elbow pads.
When first arriving, observe the others at the park. Where everyone else is skating will determine where you go. Beginners need space and time, so it's best to go where there is no pressure to take turns.
Take turns when skating with others. Your turn is over when you don’t land the trick or you fall. Do not keep trying to land the trick if someone else is waiting to take a turn.
If you’re new, don’t skate at busy skateparks or skate at an empty skatepark alone. It's best to go with friends and look put for each other.
- CHECKLIST OF SKILLS TO ATTAIN BEFORE SKATE PARKING -
Checklist starts at 2:40
1. Learn To skate forwards and backwards and also to transition in both directions
2. Point. In the direction you are skating when skating in open street. And park sessions with. Other skaters
3. Learn to be comfortable falling. ALOT.
Links. To the Moxi falling section
4. Get really. Comfortable putting. Weight into, landing & running on your toe stops
5. Pumping to generate speed (the motion)
6. In-between Pumping (when to turn & do tricks)
7. Pumping: WHERE ON THE RAMP TO DO IT 2 ways a)all forwards b) forwards & backwards
8. Get familiar with the coping to get out of the ramp

Hi I am a skateboarder and I have a tip for beginners. Don't be afraid to practice on your own. Like alone in your garage. It's not really obvious, but all those people at the skatepark probably practiced by themselves for a long time before they were comfortable doing stuff in front of other people. If you don't feel comfortable just practice by yourself until you have a little more confidence.

Also don’t be afraid to go to the skatepark whenever you feel like it. The skateboarders and scooter kids don’t own it. You’ll probably never see them in any other place in your life So fuck it

Also, dress in clothes you don’t mind tearing up or will protect your skin when you fall. If you wear shorts and fall, you will have this crazy burn that will make your life difficult for a weeks.

Thank you for your great tips ! Your so encouraging! I’m a 51 year old momma who wants to skate with her 15 yr old skate board daughter. Watching your videos over the last few months here and there has gave me the courage to skate after 35 yrs I bought a pair of lollys and I’m skating like I’m 15 again . The best part is my daughter doesn’t mind me being around the skate park . Thanks again for all the love you put in to everything you do 💕🌺🛼

To me pumping seems very similar to swinging on a swing. You naturally know when to push to gain more speed and when to give yourself up to gravity.

Im very anxious about falling as well. What helps me is wearing knee and wrist pads, and a helmet. They help me feel secure. Also, accepting that you will fall eventually. Practice falling safely (on your side, or even bailing with one knee on the ground).

Hi Estro! This video is exactly what I've been looking for. I just turned 54 so I treated myself to some park skates. I'm nervous to even make a first attempt at skating in a bowl. I think I'll be fine dropping in; it's the getting out that worries me. The tips you give in your video has given me more confidence to give it a go. You are often the topic of dinner conversation. I tell my family about your incredible skating skills, your calm demeanor, and your big heart. Thank you for sharing.

@3:35 "Pointing in the direction you are going ...' I started using this for skating outdoors in the street and sidewalks, to non-verbally communicate to the other cars/bikes/pedestrians to let them know where I am going. With cars, this is usually done at stop signs/intersections where the car is in my way, and I'm pointing to show I'm going to skate around the back of their car instead of the front. It's been very helpful.

Or just go to the skate parks when it’s empty duh?
@magicunicorn6535
@magicunicorn6535 3 жыл бұрын
I look for little empty spots in the park, usually a feature in a corner somewhere, and practice whatever skills that feature allows. I don't stay for too long, however. I rotate around to other empty or uncrowded spots so that everyone gets a chance to skate everything. It also helps because sometimes you can't quite get the move you were trying to do, and after leaving and going and working on something else, when you return later you're suddenly able to get it. I don't know why that happens, but it does. It's like a brain and muscle re-set.

I am the biggest sook that ever sooked. I am scared of hurting myself. I'm extremely timid at the skatepark. I have been skating for like a year and a half now. It's been fabulous. But I've only just learned to drop in off a basic (but to my mind, big ass) 1/4 pipe w/ coping. I don't think skill or balance was a limiting factor for me. Fear has been. The first time I went to the skate park, my husband (bless him) tried to get me to go over something that was objectively at my level... but I got scared, bailed and landed on my arse and literally quit skating for 6months because I wasn't ready to fall. A friend from my course was getting back into skating and convinced me to go with him and now I go every week. I love it. I've improved so much. But it's been blindingly slow. I have stood on my toe stops for 45 minutes (my feet and ankled were numb af by the end) trying to pluck up the courage to go down a ramp literally only 30cm high. I have stood at the top of your basic 1/4 pipe transition for probably a good 7months until I finally felt the courage to drop in from it. There are children and adults alike who are just FEARLESS. I am not one of those people. Something that has helped me was creating a persona of myself who was fearless. She could go down the ramp. I'm going to pretend to be her. I have conquered so much pretending I'm a person without fear. It might help you to try it. Recently, I had my first major collison a couple weeks ago- with a skateboarder. Honestly, we both messed up (my friend was watching the situation). I fell on my arse. It really, really hurt (it still hurts). But because, and I really believe this, I took my time to work up to the scary stuff as a person full of fear (dropping in, going down the big ass 1/4 pipe, going down the big ass 1/4 pipe that connects to a big ass ramp via a platform that makes you go so fast you might die lol), the pain that the fall cause me didn't make me feel like I want to give up like last time- like, not at all. I went down the big connecter ramp/ 1/4 thing 2 more times before I decided that actually I can't walk properly, lol. Just... guys... if you are an afriad skater... thats ok. If new skaters are BLASTING pass you in their progress on their first day doing things you still can't do after 6months... that's ok. Stick at it, keep conquering fears. Be around people who will push you a little, offer suggestion for next steps, being literal goals for you to inspire you... that's enough. You'll get there. Dream big, but don't get impatient to progress. Enjoy the process. Not everybody is going to be able to do the "my skating journey in 30 days" and be able to do backflips or twirls or flipping anything, honestly. It's ok to skate afraid. It's ok to skate slow. It's ok to not learn a new thing every single session. Those things don't make you a failure, those things make you brave- you're going against a huge beast inside you that has probably been taking up residence for a LONG time. Just... believe in yourself... and if you can't, find others who do, and fake it until you believe in yourself too. You got this. I believe in you. Get it!

100%! I went to a skate park the other week, and forgot one half of a ramp had a set of stairs on the other side, which I obviously was not intending to go down, so I jumped over the steps, and slid onto the concrete my kneepads (and subsequently, my toe guards). Not even a bruise or sore spot anywhere from that fall! All that gear may feel bulky, but if I hadn't had it on, then I would not be skating for about a month if I took that jump onto concrete on my knees, heheh. Save yourself from injuries today so that you can skate again tomorrow, is what I always say. ^_^

Hey Hey! This is so great and I am excited to get on the ramps soon! Thank you! From a skater getting ready for ramps! Just need to get my helmet first. ;) If you get a chance, may you please make a video which runs through different variations of transitions? From basics through to more advanced, and where you might use each of them? I am a sole skater in a small community and these videos are where I am learning, sometimes though I feel like I miss out on sharing tips and tricks or the intricacies of weight transfers because I haven't got many people to share ideas with. So this is the thing I am trying to figure out next and I thought I could ask the online community. I have a few transitions that I can do, a 180 jump and a pivot and a (I made this one up so far) 'pointed toe follow through?' thingy and a heel to heel turn, but I can't get much speed on them yet. So a more detailed transitions video, with some ideas about weight and trying to work some speed into them would help me heaps. If you already have one, that I couldn't find, may somebody point me in the right direction? Or if someone makes one, or has any ideas, please let me know! :) Briana

This was really helpful, I’ve been watching videos on tips and all because I’m going to be starting soon, if you have a video on how to attach the grind block or have a link to a pair of skates that already have one, would you mind replying with it? Thank you.

Love this! I really need to figure out transitions now, because ramp skating looks like so much fun! But my body freaks out and freezes when I try to turn, it’s incredibly frustrating and discouraging. Any tips on how to get over such a visceral fear response?

The hard wheels thing- I was skating on 92A’s and decided to try 98A’s I was slipping all over the place and felt super nervous skating so I switched back to my 92’s. When trying to carve I fell and because of the grip my foot didn’t slip with me but actually stayed in the same spot resulting in a broken ankle and having to take months out! 💔 I wish there was an in between wheel with rounded edges!! Maybe 95A. I haven’t found one yet though.

Estro what do you recommend for the fear of the air out especially backwards? Knees bent? How to help yourself and not to fear it? Plus sth I learnt - better wear jeans than leggings especially on wooden ramps - I once ended up falling-sliding hard & thus taking splinters of the ramp with me home on a specific part of my body 😄🤣 jeans are a lot better!!

thank you for making these videos! I'm really excited to start skating at the skate park, and I'm looking forward to the video about dropping in. If I don't have hard wheels on my skates, would you recommend I get some before ramp skating? or do you think I can make it work if it's all I have?

Glad you like them! Yes!I would definitely recommend getting hard wheels before hittinng. the park. If its all you have and your just learning- wait til you have hard wheels. Soft wheels numb the sensitivity of the feel and it's dangerous when learning.

Hi! I've just purchased my first pair of skates and have had a few "get-to-know-myself" sessions on flat ground. I live in China and thankfully there are a lot of skateparks popping up in my city but in-person stores are limited. You mentioned hard wheels. What else would you recommend for a beginner? And can your products ship to China? :D

The pandemic has put all of. our last year's product development projects on hold. This boot is coming out soon. It's twice as stiffer as the first Jack but still flexible.

I've found that shin guards under knee socks make me less paranoid about hitting my shins on the coping. And padded shorts - either worn over leggings or under other clothing, makes butt-plants a lot less painful.

I always feel that my trucks are getting stuck on the coping (my wheelbase is pretty short). That’s why I have problems on using the whole ramp.I just thought I’ll just need slide blocks but I could hear the same sound and also saw that Estro was stuck for a short time on the coping especially when they went fakie and they have slide blocks on.Does anybody has tips for this problem? When I am stuck on the coping for this short time I just get in panic and have to put my feet quickly somewhere else because I feel like I am preventing myself from falling this way so I am not able to just continue on rolling back into the ramp. Thank you Estro for your vids they’re very helpful! 💕Lovely Greetings from Germany (that’s why my English is not that good😬)
