My brother died by suicide almost 2 years ago. I wish everyday I could've done something different to talk him out of it. Depression is real, take people seriously when they're struggling. You won't regret it. Rip Garrett.

Having someone to talk to at that very moment it occurs, helps switch the brain. Just talking about anything or listening to others talk about anything for 20 minutes, is a helpful ‘distraction’ which allows the brain to have a moment to re-shift. Then move into an activity immediately- this will help to avoid and break the pattern.

Happy to hear you survived that. If only you'd been directed to be properly evaluated by a psychologist before seeing a psychiatrist, then things might've worked out differently. Psychiatrist is there to hear about your symptoms and just based on that one visit (no real evaluation) prescribe whatever drug seems to help alleviate those symptoms. A psychologist will try to figure out who you are, what you are, and based off the things you've done or what somebody else has done to you, will help you recognize what's at the core of your problems. Definitely involves some difficult introspection on one's life and other unique processes that help you work through the problems and develop tools/methods for coping and/or healing from depression, anxiety, trauma etc. without prescribing pharmaceutical drugs. Usually, the process should be Primary Care Physician refers to Psychologist, the psychologist evaluates you over a certain period of time, then if necessary they then refer you to a psychiatrist and will request a follow-up visit with them after visiting with the psychiatrist. However, most PCP's are not just skipping the psychologist and going directly to the psychiatrist or even acting as psychiatrists and prescribing the meds right there with no real evaluation whatsoever.

Add sleep to everything Dan has mentioned -- getting a good night's sleep, even 10-12 hours' worth if necessary, enables me to bounce back from depression very effectively. Dan mentions eating clean and healthy: caffeine and sugar can mess with your ability to reach REM levels of sleep, so keep an eye on those substances. (Edit: some people seem to think I’m suggesting sleeping 12 hours every night forever - I’m only suggesting a night or whatever you feel you need to reduce that feeling of depression in combination with the other things Dan mentioned. I’m only sharing what has worked for me. As I said before any of my edits, I recommend sleep combined with Dan’s suggestions - for myself, it was part of an overall method that unlocked the way out of my depression for me - you will have to find your own. If you have another approach, feel free to share. Some people are reading these comments looking to help themselves.)

I had depression and anxiety for years. This year I lost my sister to domestic violence and it made it come back. After all these years I finally found some things that help, but it will never heal me completely after losing a sibling. Some of the things I do is trying to be more involved with family members I never had anything to do with. I also started working in the yard more. One of my biggest things that helps me sounds the silliest, I started studying into space and space travel. It excites me and gives me something to look forward to. Hang in there bro, my best friend of 35 years passed away a few years back and we were super tight like I hung out with him nearly every day. I was weak as well as depressed and anxious and turned to drugs, and had a fentanyl smoking habit for 5 ish years, and I have been clean for 1. Now that I have to actually face this depression, trauma, shame, guilt, one of the main things that is helping me is gardening and youtube, including lots of space travel video's but I am less specific and just search for usually science videos(Veritasium, Vsauce, etc). Also there is absolutely nothing silly about studying space and space travel and even if there was, it's not worth caring that other people find it silly. I would strongly recommend that you not let what other people think affect your self esteem like that, as it can be a source of depression

Therapy, exercise, and proper medication all work if given a chance.

I'm not someone who suffers from depression, but whenever I feel like I'm in a rut I have a bit of a routine. First is exercising, then the body feels tired and it allows it to sleep better. Then when I have better sleep, I find writing small stories, poems, drawing and writing songs on the guitar really help. Even just writing a list of the things that are daunting. Getting them out and on to paper (or singing them) really alleviates pressure. The trick I use with the creativity is to remember it's not for anyone else and just let it flow, thinking only in the moment. Not thinking about who might see it, what they might say, what they will think of you and detach from validation and external pressure. It's by me, for me. I find that it really helps to reign in overwhelming thoughts and hones self awareness which is necessary with problem solving.

There’s different kinds of depression but the best remedy to all the diverse kinds are a connection to other human beings. Talking, listening, dedicating time and attention to others. We are creatures who very much need connections to each other. Conversation and regularly being together with others is very healing & stabilizing.

Lex Fridman has opened up the human mind by allowing great thinkers like himself to express their views on his vocasts. Here is the number one thing that erases depression. The disclaimer I have to offer is that I am not a health worker; I am an artist/musician. What will reduce depression to bread crumbs is to go for one's greatest challenge. The caveat is that this turns off people in droves because your mind must goes on a different train track in your head for it to work and it's uncomfortable for a long, long time. But it works. It works to eliminate non-essential things from the mind that tear us down because if you truly go for what is your greatest challenge, you have no time or energy left for the inner-voice, or internal witness or one's auto-critic to do its dirty number on one's state of mind and sense of self-esteem among a long list of other zones. Lastly, it's hard to do; it's hard to do one's best because of how much it takes out of you. But it's a trade-off isn't it? Stay the same and you go down to your socks once again: go for what will make you think you're great and it will use up every drop of your energy to get you there and leave behind the negative things that used to bring you down.

I can help on this one. For men 1. Exercise 2. Improve yourself financially (if needed). Make moves and seek improvement in your career or business 3. SLEEP! SLEEP! SLEEP! Let me say it one more time. SLEEP!! 7 to 9 hours 4. Vitamin D start getting sunlight and take the vitamins 5. Stop chasing women and watching porn. Nothing beneficial comes out of both of those. 6. Create a routine. A routine is CRUCIAL to a man. Routine means discipline and discipline means self love. Do these 6 things for 2 weeks your life will change its like a ball rolling down hill. Alcohol and depression go hand in hand. Add in SSRI's or benzos being pushed by LSW's via psychiatric np's, and you have disaster waiting to happen. A disaster that destroys individuals and families. In short, It's a recipe for suicide, which is far too common amongst those on the medications stated, usually in conjunction with alcohol or drugs. Getting sober, acknowledging, and owning your issues, getting good sleep, being active and eating right have such a positive impact when treating depression. Instead, the therapist's push medication as a treatment first, leaving you in a fogged-out, emotionless state, while ignoring the underlying cause. I'm sure not every therapist phones it in, but the relationship between psychiatric medications, alcohol abuse, and suicide is alarming.

i've had chronic depression for 17 years. i went 18 months sober and it was by a mile, actually the only time i've been happy in my adult life. Unfortunately around a year ago i fell off the wagon and dabbled in cocaine and drunk heavily weekly, after a month or 2 i felt like i was going insane, depressed and anxious. I'm over 5 weeks sober again and feeling brilliant, gym, running, walking and leaving the house to do something other than work has helped a lot. Also turning my mobile phone off every night instead of just sitting on it, i feel has helped a lot.

@@dalebaker5030 this is the answer! Your story and lived experience speaks volumes for those willing to read or listen. Alcoholism is a symptom of depression, but also cause. People who are depressed and get inebriated tend to hit rock bottom because they aren't thinking clearly, with a drastic reduction in good judgment. It's such a problem, especially with people in their 30's-40's, as everything revolves around wine, beer, and hard alcohol, especially amongst middleclass soccer moms and dads.

Eh, man. This is incredibly dangerous thinking to put out there. I was a horrible mess despite eating well, sleeping decently etc etc until I was placed on a mood stabilizer. I stayed on it for almost a year and tapered off and hadn't needed it since. I spent close to a decade afraid of medication and listening to people telling me it is a placebo or does more harm than good, when in actuality they can and do help millions of people around the world. There is no shame or problem with needing medication to help you. You don't have to stay on them forever, they can incredibly useful and lifesaving. Sometimes peoples brains are that out of whack that medication is the only thing that will help. It isn't that huge a stretch to imagine that the most complex organ in our bodies sometimes may need drastic measures.

@@gingerroot8802 I'm not anti-medication, just cautious through experience. Far too often SSRI's and benzodiazepines are pushed first. These drugs do help people who have clinical depression that can't be helped through what I spoke about. However, they aren't for everyone, but are pushed as if the are. Often, it's a psychiatric np prescribing them with no monitoring on a weekly basis via bloodwork and conversation. Saying see you in a month to someone fresh on an SSRI with suicidal thoughts being a side effect is not helping the person.

Healthy living, relationships, and inner talk is important. If someone offends us unwarranted, it takes self esteem to not take things personally, so many people take things personally, the ability to look silly or look weak or to love. Love is opposite of the worlds values. If we choose to give a second chance out of love, to the world that seems foolish. I told my friends that I wanted to see a therapist and while it's already 2022, certain cultures in certain parts of the world still view seeing a therapist as an admittance of weakness. Luckily I never had that mindset but unluckily I was made fun of for it when I wanted to see one due to my depression(a former friend of mine said "therapy is such a white person thing"; I'm asian btw). From then on I cut myself from them and while I really don't have anyone to talk to anymore about literally anything outside of work. Just being mindful and taking care of my life was something that I needed. I didn't tell them I was feeling suicidal but I don't think whether I did or did not fully explain my reason for seeing one would prompt me to get a response like that.

Going to a therapist should be like going to the dentist. Do it twice a year even if you think you are "coping" to just check in. If nothing else it creates some space for you to think about how you are feeling, which we don't always make. And it also normalises going to therapy or getting help for mental health. It's no more stigmatised than going to the dentist.

Obv this is a multifactorial problem and the underlying reasons differ for people. But this might help as a not so obvious detail. After doing a serum Aminoacid-status ( private blood test ) I was told that my Phenylalanine and Tyrosine levels were super low, along with Tryptophan and Arginine . Been supplementing with L-Phenylalanine and L-Tyrosine and Mucuna Pruriens. The depressive episodes improved massively and made space to stack other helpful tools on top. Looking into the chemistry of how L-Phenylalanine and L-Tyrosin affect the Dopamine cascade, it makes sense. I recommend a lab test for your individual amino acid status and orthomolecular status to everyone as just another tool. For the latter, orthomolecular markers, tweaking out of whack levels like Copper or Chromium also helped to improve things.

It IS very important to find the right therapist for YOU. You need to feel comfortable & not judged… that’s harder to find than you would imagine. It’s gonna suck, it’s not fun, but you need a therapist that’s not gonna make an already emotionally difficult process even harder. If you don’t vibe with your therapist, don’t give up, just find the right therapist for you.

Therapy can be a detriment to some, and also I would say the "results" of people that it does supposedly help are open to interpretation on whether it actually did help. For example, can you say for sure that the person in therapy wasn't going to heal at the same rate if they did not go to therapy? People need to learn to move on, and re-hashing your trauma over and over again so you can talk about it to your therapist is not moving on...

You enjoy watching Lex's videos! You enjoy posting on this comment section and I enjoyed reading what you wrote. I can relate to what you said, man. Twelve years ago I couldn't feel anything and it took a while. Now I get so much joy out of so many little things. Hang in there. I have bipolar and depression issues and I used to think that I was a drug addict or alcoholic because that was what I was doing to deal with it. I just spent the past hour and a half listening to the rain fall on my roof and it was great! I remember Kurt Cobain's lyric, "I wish I was like you...easily amused..." I am now easily amused and it is great! Hang in there Jose, seriously. Some day you will be able to help someone, encourage someone like yourself and share the story of how you got all the way back and then some.

I've had therapy before and been on multiple antidepressants and it sucks. Imagine not wanting to live, and then you take pills that just make you numb to living. It doesn't fix anything, it just makes you care even less. Shrooms have been great, but the effects only last a week or so and they're hard to come by unless I want to grow my own which my wife is completely against so I "can't". So now every time I get to my breaking point where I just want to die, I make plans to be alone like making sure the wife and kid is gone, and then I load up some some DMT in this dab machine I secretly have (apx volt) and just take a breakthrough amount. If I'm willing to take a bullet to the face then I can take 50mg of DMT and ride it out. That's been my therapy so far. I don't recommend it honestly because it only furthers that feeling that none of this matters and we live in a simulation, but the one good thing it does after wearing off is just get me back into wanting to thrive in this current life I'm living even if it feels like I'm just some NPC in a bullshit sim.

Seasonal depression it is because we are super sensitive I feel more I am more sensitive to everything the good and the bad things.... I feel things like that.... Open hearted people go deeply low with sadness and anger and deeply high with joy etc... We are very much affected by noise, and we live better in nature for example. It is my point of view. ❤ Dépression is there to tell us something is wrong in what we think or what we do or say... And it is an opportunity to change to transform that...in something good and listen more to our hearts. And go where we really want to go our soul plan. ❤

I suffered from depression in my 30s after separating from my wife (and by extension my kids via her actions and court decisions). I was exercising every day (an hour long walk with my dogs every morning, an hour weight training 6 days a week after work, jogging for 30-45 minutes 3 times a week at lunchtime, playing association football once or twice a week, occasionally playing badminton in the evening (I guess I was pretty fit then)) and eating very healthily, although I had trouble sleeping at times due to obsessing about my situation (smoking weed to knock me out helped with that). I went to my doctor who encouraged me to take Prozac. I refused as I think pharmaceuticals are to be avoided whenever possible. I eventually went to a psychiatrist and that helped, I think mainly because there was someone who listened to me and agreed with me that my problems were as a direct result of my ex wife's actions. However, what changed things dramatically for me was taking acid (LSD), something that I had resisted previously. It helped me to see things from a different perspective. I was literally cured overnight. (I took it a few times afterwards but haven't done it for decades). I would seriously recommend that people suffering from depression look into microdosing psilocybin (rather than a trip because that takes up too much time and is potentially dangerous).

It's interesting because I grew up Mormon as well and to be honest, Latter Day Saints are among the kindest, loving, and generous groups of people I've ever known. That being said, when you get to a certain age and look into religion and spirituality for yourself, you feel betrayed, at least I did. I have anger towards my parents and grand parents still for indoctrinating me. Even if their intentions were "good", it was a serious miscalculation of the effect it can have on a child's psychology. Finally realizing that half my family believes in absolute bat shit insanity, while still being good people. I still haven't really reconciled these thoughts.
